WDBJ7 reporter Alison Parker and photojournalist Adam Ward were filming a segment in Moneta when a disgruntled former colleague fired at them during a live broadcast. Both died at the scene and the suspected gunman, Vester Flanagan, later shot and killed himself.

Hours after the tragedy, bosses at USA Network, the company which airs Mr. Robot, announced they were delaying the season one finale by a week, because scenes in the programme were eerily similar to the events in Virginia that morning.

A statement from a company spokesman reads: "The previously filmed season finale of Mr. Robot contains a graphic scene similar in nature to today's tragic events in Virginia. Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight’s episode. Our thoughts go out to all those affected during this difficult time."

The finale of Mr. Robot is now scheduled to air on 2 September (15).
