The forthcoming sci-fi film is an ambitious project led by two of Hollywood's elite filmmakers - James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez.

Sin City director Rodriguez will direct the film for 20th Century Fox ,while Aliens legend Cameron is set to produce Alita alongside his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau.

The Scorch Trials star Rosa Salazar is playing the titular lead, a cyborg found in a scrapyard by a scientist who doesn't remember anything about herself or why she was created. The only thing Alita does recall is her killer martial-arts training, which she uses in her new job chasing down criminals as a bounty hunter.

Should Waltz join the project, he will portray Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who discovers Alita in the junkyard and comes to serve as her mentor.

Alita: Battle Angel the film is based on Japanese artist Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita manga series. The movie's script will be written and adapted by Terminator Genisys screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis.

Alita: Battle Angel is due to begin filming this fall (16) and it is slated for a July 2018 release.
