After Entering The Oscars Race, "American Sniper" Dominates January Box Office

Bradley Cooper Clint Eastwood

American Sniper is on track to win this weekend’s box office. Unsurprising, given the six Oscar nods the Bradley Cooper starrer scooped up this week, including Cooper’s third Best Actor nod in as many years.  It earned six Oscar nominations on Thursday, including Best Picture and a Best Actor nod for Bradley Cooper. The Time Warner release even made it seem like even more of an event via asking IMAX to do a lightning-quick conversion for yesterday’s wide release.

American Sniper Review

Excellent

Once again, director Clint Eastwood lurks in the background, springing a stunningly atmospheric thriller on audiences when they least expect it. Honestly, for an 84-year-old Eastwood is an astoundingly nimble filmmaker, able to take an audience right into a tense situation while never cheating with flashy movie trickery. This film grabs us without mercy, pulling us into a morally complex situation that gets our head spinning.

It's the true story of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), the Navy Seal sniper credited with the most official kills after serving four tours of duty in Iraq. Based on his memoir, the film traces him from his religious upbringing, during which he's taught about guns and encroaching evil from an early age. So after the 9/11 attacks, he enlists in the Navy. His sharp-shooting skills are quickly apparent. And as he prepares for his first assignment abroad, he romances local girl Taya (Sienna Miller), a feisty woman who knows what she's getting into. Chris, on the other hand, is instantly thrown into a quandary when his first targets as a sniper are a woman and child who seem to be carrying a bomb. Over the next few years, his marriage to Taya and his moral centre are tested by his military service. And when an Iraqi sniper challenges him, he takes it personally.

Jason Hall's script sticks close to Chris' perspective, which is intensified by Eastwood's coolly efficient direction and Cooper's beefy performance. By putting the audience so tightly within Chris' point of view, we are unable to escape the psychological impact of his experiences, even if real warfare is no doubt much more horrific even than what's depicted here. Cleverly, the film never asks us to judge Chris, merely to see how battle changes him. And Cooper is terrific at finding tiny details that reveal both Chris' altered state and the core stability that never leaves him.

Clint Eastwood On Crucial Research For 'American Sniper'

Clint Eastwood Bradley Cooper

Production for 'American Sniper' began back in May, 2012, after Warner Brothers acquired the rights to Chris Kyle's autobiography of the same name. On 2nd February, 2013, Kyle was shot dead at a shooting range in Texas by a fellow ex-marine, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. That sort of devastating twist in the tale was enough to cause director Steven Spielberg to leave the project, yet it wasn't enough to keep Clint Eastwood from stepping in and bringing the hero's story to the big screen.

"The studio called and asked if I would be interested in being involved with this picture," explained Eastwood, "and ironically I was reading his book. In fact I was down to about the last 30 pages." Eastwood officially joined the project as a director on 21st August 2013. After receiving the offer, he sat down and finished the book, calling back the following day to accept the job.

'American Sniper' Is A Late Arrival To The Oscars Party

Bradley Cooper Clint Eastwood

The heart-pounding teaser trailer for American Sniper had so much promise that perhaps a current "fresh" score of 74% for Clint Eastwood's movie seems underwhelming. That figure will probably climb in the coming days leaving the tense drama starring Bradley Cooper with a one way ticket to the Oscars.

Bradley CooperBradley Cooper stars as sniper Chris Kyle in American Sniper

It tells the story of Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history who is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. However, in pinpoint accuracy and incredible kill record puts a price on his head, making his the prime target for insurgents.

'Jersey Boys' Continues Flow From Stage To Screen

Clint Eastwood

Movie producers are again turning to Broadway for source material for blockbusters, thanks to the mega-success of film adaptations like Mamma Mia and Les Miserables. And now the Tony and Olivier-winning Jersey Boys has been adapted to the big screen by none other than Clint Eastwood, although he seems to have thought he was making a period mob drama rather than a movie musical.

Jersey BoysJersey Boys hits cinemas tonight

Musical films almost vanished completely for the 20 years between Grease (1978) and Evita (1997), although it can be argued that the format was kept alive by Disney animators with the likes of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, all of which have taken the reverse trip from screen to Broadway. Other films had songs added for stage versions and then returned to the big screen in musical form. See The Producers (1967 original, musical staged in 2001 and filmed in 2005) and Hairspray (1988 original, musical staged in 2002 and filmed in 2007). After 2012's Les Miserables movie, based on the still-running 1980 stage musical, it's no surprise that this Christmas' big movie musicals feel like time travel.

Jersey Boys Review

OK

Music-lover Clint Eastwood adapts the long-running stage musical for the big screen with mixed results: it recounts a terrific true story but has an uneven pace. It also fails to put the events into any kind of context in the period, which leaves the achievements of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons feeling isolated from the rest of the music industry of the time. So it's difficult to engage in much of what happens.

In 1951 Newark, Frankie (John Lloyd Young) works as a barber's assistant, hangs out with a mafioso (Christopher Walken) and sings in a band with his pals Tommy and Nick (Vincent Piazza and Michael Lomenda), troublemakers up to all kinds of scams. But it's when they added songwriter Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen) to the band that things begin to take off. Working with ace producer Bob Crewe (Mike Doyle), they release three No 1 singles in a row: Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry and Walk Like a Man. And their fame grows from there. But Tommy's money problems eat away at the band's unity, and Nick begins to think that he's had enough.

Oddly, there the story of the Four Seasons feels dragged out to sustain a two-hour 15-minute film. The narrative is fractured and episodic, with long stretches in which nothing happens that hasn't been portrayed in every other musician biopic. Eastwood directs the film like a serious period epic, draining much of the colour from the screen while concentrating on shades of grey and brown. But the real problem is the script, which never manages to build up any momentum. Big events pale in interest next to the fantastic music, while a confusing flashback jumbles the timeline unnecessarily. And occasional scenes are narrated by the actors straight to camera, which is extremely distracting on a film screen, especially when Nick stops singing and starts chatting to us in the middle of the band's iconic performance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

'Jersey Boys' Musical Given Hollywood Makeover By Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood Christopher Walken Vincent Piazza Billy Gardell John Lloyd Young

Jersey Boys received its premiere screening in New York City on Monday where director Clint Eastwood and the musical adaptation's cast were present and correct in sharp suits. Based on the musical of the same name, the biopic tells the story of four young men who came together to form popular sixties rock group The Four Seasons.

Eastwood may be better known for his hard-man action films but the 84 year-old film legend and music fan revealed that Jersey Boys was a passion project: "What was fun for me is that it's about musicians [...] The Four Seasons had all these hit songs, but they were juvenile delinquents! They were just guys from the neighborhood, a place where, if you were a singer, you were looked down upon as strange, unless you were Sinatra," Eastwood revealed, via The Daily Mail.

Starring Christopher Walken, Boardwalk Empire's Vincent Piazza, Mike & Molly actor Billy Gardell and Jersey Boys stage star, actress Erica Piccininni, the movie is fairly unique in that the actors were required to sing live.

But like any chart sensations, they started from the bottom living a difficult life in New Jersey. Despite achieving the fame they so desperately yearned for as young musicians, with success brought a lot of struggles; the band members' relationships became frequently tested, particularly as both fans and producers became interested in bringing Frankie's voice out more and more. Meanwhile, they had their personal lives to worry about with family troubles and problems involving the Mob - but in the end, the successes of tunes such as 'Sherry', 'Big Girls Don't Cry' and 'Walk Like a Man' would make them the one of the most iconic acts of the decade.

The website reports that Francesca was spotted out and about in Hollywood this week, sans wedding ring. But it could just be that the two are trying to be private about the affair… well, affair probably isn’t the right word at this point. But you get the idea - it was all very hush-hush.

Milius Review

Very Good

A biography of iconic filmmaker John Milius, this engaging documentary features some of the biggest stars of all time talking about their friend who changed the movies forever. And he's got such a huge presence that we love listening to his stories almost as much as we've loved watching his films over the decades. This movie also explores his controversial image as a right-wing gun lover, but the salient fact is that his friends and colleagues clearly love him dearly.

John Milius has always been a man's man. His asthma prevented him from joining the military, so he instead went to film school in the 1960s with a group that included Lucas, Spielberg, Coppola and Scorsese. And these young turks were exactly what cinema needed as the studio system ended. Milius' uncredited screenplay for Dirty Harry got him work as a writer and director, and his crowning achievement remains the screenplay for Apocalypse Now. He's also proud of his passion project Big Wednesday, an iconic surfing film that vanished without a trace when the studio abandoned it. But everything changed with Red Dawn, the teen fantasy that gave him his pro-gun reputation as a pariah. He's been less busy since, but is still working on his long-gestating epic about Genghis Khan, even though he has spent the past few years recovering from a debilitating stroke.

Like Milius himself, this is a beefy, jovial movie that zips along at a fast pace, observing telling details everywhere without any real criticism. Milius calls himself a "zen anarchist" rather than a conservative, and it's fascinating to see his life-loving personality emerge in the clips. Meanwhile, we see all of the iconic lines he's written and cinema-changing moments he's had a hand in, from writing Robert Shaw's amazing USS Indianapolis speech in Jaws to teaching Arnold Schwarzenegger how to hold a sword for Conan.
