Hail, Caesar! Trailer

Ever since his wonderful appearance in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, we've been waiting for Ralph Fiennes to take up a similar role that shows a completely different side to the actor, now it looks like the Coen Brothers have given the actor such a role. Laurence Lorenz is an eccentric film director who finds himself caught up in a fiasco when Hollywood superstar Baird Whitlock is kidnapped.

Fargo regularly finds itself on the top rung of movie buffs' top lists, so when a TV adaptation was announced last year, there was obvious scepticism. Writer and showrunner Noah Hawley is the man behind the series - which extends the Coen Brothers classic movie to 10 one-hour episodes.

By mid last week, we already knew that Hawley had succeeded. The U.S critics had their say and the reviews were glorious. Now, following Fargo's premiere in the UK on Sunday (April 20, 2014), the Brits have had their say.

'Inside Llewyn Davis,' The Oscar Winner That Never Was

Coen Brothers

There was a mild acceptance that Inside Llewyn Davis had only pulled in two minor Oscar nominations when the list was announced last week. 2013/2014 has been a phenomenally strong year for cinema, leaving critically acclaimed efforts like Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, The Dallas Buyers Club and the epic Captain Phillips second, third and fourth favorites in the category of Best Picture.

Oscar IsaacsOscar Isaacs as Llewyn Davis

The Coen Brothers latest effort, about a young folk singer navigating the Greenwich Village music scene in the early 1960s, failed to pull in nominations in the major categories, marking a major blot on the Academy's otherwise reasonable set of nominees. It is perhaps some consolation that the excellent Bruno Delbonnel - the man who brought Amelie to life - is rightfully nominated for Best Cinematography.

Inside Llewyn Davis, Anybody? The 5 Biggest Oscar Nomination Snubs

Coen Brothers Robert Redford Emma Thompson

Ok, so the Oscar nominations pretty much played out as we expected on Thursday morning (January 16, 2013) with a minimal amount of surprise nominations and plenty for the big boys, 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club and The Wolf of Wall Street. However, it was the Oscar snubs that really made the headlines, with the Coen Brothers Inside Llewyn Davis - described by critics as the filmmakers' best work - ignored completely.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Inside Llewyn Davis. The folksy Greenwich Village-set movie was the Grand Prix winner at last year's Cannes Film Festival and certainly warranted one of the ten best picture spots. It was one of the Top 10 movies of the year. It just was. The Academy didn't think so. It didn't receive a single nomination in the major acting categories. Not for Isaacs, not for Timberlake, not for Mulligan, not for the Coens, not for makeup, not for costumes. Nothing.

The awards season is full swing, and will culminate with the Academy’s statuettes being doled out in March. But the buzz has been palpable since 'Gravity' triumphed at the Venice film festival, and with plenty of films receiving awards since then, it’s time for a brief recap.

Most recently – Saturday Jan 4th in fact – the Coen Brothers’ 'Inside Llewyn Davis' won big at the National Society of Film Critics. The story of the folk singer’s experience with the New York folk scene in 1961 also kicked off gong-giving season with a win at the Gotham Independent Films Awards on December 2.

'Inside Llewyn Davis' Wins Gotham Award, But What About The Oscars?

Coen Brothers Oscar Isaac Justin Timberlake Carey Mulligan

Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen Brothers' movie starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake, beat 12 Years a Slave to win Best Picture at the 23rd annual Gotham Independent Awards on Monday evening (December 2, 2013).

The award is considered a huge boost for the Coens' movie, which is set for limited release on Friday to make it eligible for consideration at the Golden Globes and Oscars in 2014. Though reviews have been highly favorable following screenings at the film festivals, the movie - a comedy-drama about a singer-songwriter who navigates his way through New York's folk music scene in the 1960s - has generally been discussed only as an outsider for the major awards behind Captain Phillips, Gravity and perhaps crucially 12 Years a Slave.

Lesbian Love Story Beats Coen Brothers To Palme D'Or At Cannes

Cannes Film Festival Steven Spielberg Adele Exarchopoulos Lea Seydoux Alexander Payne Berenice Bejo Coen Brothers

An intimate lesbian love story by Abdellatif Kechiche won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the prestigious Palme d'Or on Sunday. La Vie d'Adele - Chapitre 1 & 2 (Blue is the Warmest Colour) was chosen by a jury headed by Steven Spielberg as the best movie showing in competition, despite some concerns about its length (3 hours) and content, specifically its explicit sex scenes.

According to Reuters, Spielberg said the award should be shared between Kechiche and his two lead actresses Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux, such was the level of their performances in the film.  "I think it will get a lot of play ... I think this film carries a very strong message, a very positive message," Spielberg told journalists. "It was the perfect choice between those two actresses and this incredible very sensitive and observant filmmaker." Cannes director Thierry Fremaux said the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators who marched in Paris this week to protest the country's legalization of same-sex marriage should go watch Blue Is The Warmest Colour. "Everyone who is against same-sex marriage or love between two people of the same sex must see the film," he said.

Tunisian-born actor Kechiche made his directorial debut in 2000. He was virtually speechless upon accepting the award, dedicating it to the youth of France and Tunisia who "wanted only to live, speak and love freely" during the Arab spring.

Blue Is The Warmest Colour Takes Palme D’Or Amidst Gay Marriage Context

Steven Spielberg Coen Brothers

Blue Is The Warmest Colour has taken the Palme d’Or at a time when gay marriage is slowly becoming legalized around the Western World. It’s not only political and social context that has seen this film take the prestigious prize, though.

"Young people in France are often way ahead of my generation in their thinking, and they are open to the world. Tunisian youth are the same: that's why there was a revolution. The older people didn't listen," said The winning film-maker, Abdellatif Kechiche, who admitted it was unlikely that his film will be shown in his native Tunisia because of the sexual scenes. "I will do my utmost to make sure it's seen there. But there are other countries too, like Italy, that have a problem with censorship. I hope this film will help." Presiding jury president, Steven Spielberg, was very impressed by the winner. "The film is a great love story … We were absolutely spellbound by the two brilliant young actresses, and the way the director observed his young players."

'The Great Gatsby' Opening Cannes Doesn't Seem Like Such A Good Idea Anymore

Cannes Film Festival Steven Spielberg Leonardo Dicaprio Michael Douglas Coen Brothers James Gray Joaquin Phoenix Alexander Payne

The 2013 Cannes Film Festival will open on Wednesday (May 15, 2013) with Baz Luhrmann's 3-D version of The Great Gatsby, a throwback to the roaring twenties adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic book of the same name. The announcement caused unrest earlier in the year given that Gatsby would already have been released in the U.S by the time Cannes came round (it was released last week) though there's a couple of other things to worry about.

The Great Gatsby opened in the United States to fairly lacklustre reviews, dampening the buzz surrounding the start of the 12 day Cannes Film Festival. The critics have already seen it. The critics didn't like it very much. "This dreadful film even derogates the artistry of Fitzgerald, who wrote "The Great Gatsby" while living on Long Island and in Europe," said the Wall Street Journal. It holds a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless, champagne bottles will be popped, deals will be made and Harvey Weinstein will be wandering around deciding which movie to snap up as his next Oscar winner at this year's festival. Stars expected to attend include Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling, Emma Watson and the legendary Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachan. "This is the hardest 10 days of the year for me. There are always three or four movies that are exceptional and you have to find them so it is a detective job," said Tom Bernard, co-president and co-founder of Sony Pictures Classics.

First Look: Coen Brothers' New York Folk Movie 'Inside Llewyn Davis'

Coen Brothers Oscar Isaac Carey Mulligan Adam Driver Justin Timberlake John Goodman

The first trailer for Joel and Ethan Coen's new movie 'Inside Llewyn Davis' has been released, with Oscar Isaac playing a New York City folk musician who played a prominent role in the Greenwich Village music scene during the early 1960s. Joining Isaac (Drive) in the film is Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby), Garrett Hedlund (On The Road), John Goodman (Argo), Adam Driver (Girls) and Justin Timberlake.

The trailer features Bob Dylan's 'Farewell' and sees Davis getting turned away from various Manhattan music venues as he attempts to forge a career in the folk music business. The movie is loosely based on Dave Von Ronk's posthumously published memoir The Mayor of MacDouglal Street. Production began in New York in February 2012, and actor Isaac spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about putting his musical skills to the test. "I've been playing for 20 years, so it was kind of the perfect storm of things that came together for me to be a part of it.We did all the music live, no playback; it's like a concert movie. There's like six or seven songs in it."

Sure we could do with a wood-chipper death, but the Coen Brothers don't appear to be mellowing. The trailer features their usual sharp dialogue and humour - at one point, Llewyn's wife (Mulligan) advises him, "You should be wearing condom on condom and then wrap it in electrical tape."

Gambit Premier: Cameron Diaz And Colin Firth Talk Nudity And New Skills.

Cameron Diaz Colin Firth Alan Rickman Michael Hoffman Coen Brothers

Eccentric British/American comedy 'Gambit' premiered in London last night at the Empire in Leicester square. It stars Cameron Diaz, Colin Firth and Alan Rickman, and was directed by Michael Hoffman, with a script written by the Coen Brothers. With a line-up like that you can't really go wrong!

The remake of the 1966 film of the same name follows an art curator (Firth) who is sick of his boss (Rickman) and decides to take sweet revenge, in a variety of hilarious ways, aided by cowgirl PJ Puznowski (Diaz). Despite being written by Americans and directed by another American, it's a very British comedy.

On the red carpet Firth, Diaz and Hoffman spoke to ITN and the Daily Mail, and spoke about the trials and tribulations of working on the film. Cameron and Firth spoke to ITN about the nudity in the film, that has already been widely talked about. Cameron said "nothing's gratuitous, it's all for a purpose." Which was followed by a self-defacing quip from Firth who said: "My legs are there for gratuitous comedy, and they've been shamelessly exploited." Firth only really loses his trousers in the film, but Alan Rickman's character Lord Lionel Shabandar spends some of it in his birthday suit. The making of the film wasn't all levels of nudity, Cameron also got to try her hand at real life cow-girling, in an interview with the Daily Mail she said "I got to do a little lassoing, a little roping on the cattle." Adding, "It was a lot of fun."

Why ‘Skyfall’ Could Land James Bond An Oscar Nomination

Daniel Craig Sam Mendes Javier Bardem Judi Dench Coen Brothers Forest Whitaker Leonardo Dicaprio Ryan Gosling Steven Spielberg Ben Affleck

'Skyfall', the new James Bond movie directed by Sam Mendes, hits cinemas on November 9 and already attention is turning to whether or not the picture could snag a surprise Oscar nomination.

'Oscar bait' is a term often used to describe a movie awash with all the key themes that the Academy so readily rewards. For example, they're suckers for epic dramas (Titanic, Gladiator), romance (Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient) and movies packed full of previous Oscar winners (Traffic, The Kings Speech). Oscar bait movies usually hit cinemas at the same time each year- in November or December, wafting themselves under the noses of the Academy just weeks before nominations are announced.

This year, Sony seems to have thrown 'Skyfall' into the fray as Oscar bait, so does the film have a realistic chance of a nomination? Well, as HitFix.com rightly points out, the movie has attached an Oscar winning director in Mendes, an Oscar winning and three time nominated actor in Javier Bardem and an Oscar winning actress and six-time nominee in Judi Dench. Its screenwriter is a three-time nominee while cinematographer Roger Deakins is a nine-time nominee who is almost certain to scoop the prize come February if industry insiders are to be believed. Deakins - best known for his work on just about every Coen Brothers movie - is revered in the movie business and often considered the finest cinematographer of all time. On top of all this, Skyfall's production designer, art director and second unit director have all been handed nominations in the past: i.e - the movie has all the bases covered.

Brits Julie Christie And Daniel Day-lewis Take Sag Awards

Julie Christie Alec Baldwin Brokeback Mountain Coen Brothers Edie Falco Heath Ledger James Gandolfini NBC Paul Thomas Anderson Ricky Gervais Sarah Polley The Office The Sopranos

British actors Julie Christie and Daniel Day-Lewis have won the top acting prizes at the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) awards.

While Christie took the best actress gong for her acclaimed portrayal of a woman facing dementia in Sarah Polley's Away From Her, Day-Lewis was rewarded for his stunning role as an amoral oil prospector in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood.

Though the awards season has been jeopardised by the ongoing industrial action by the Writers' Guild of America (WGA), the SAG awards were held without a hitch after an interim agreement was signed between the two unions, allowing acting talent to attend the ceremony without having to cross picket lines.

Christie - who is nominated for the best actress Academy award for her part in Away From Her - paid tribute to the SAG, adding to The Associated Press: "It's lovely to receive an award from your own union, especially at a time when we're being so forcefully reminded how important unions are."

And Day-Lewis dedicated his award to the late Heath Ledger, who was tragically found dead in his New York apartment last week.

"In Brokeback Mountain he was unique, he was perfect," Day-Lewis said while accepting his trophy.

"That scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever seen."

The 50-year-old added backstage that he had never met Ledger but had been profoundly affected by the actor's death.

"I thought he was beautiful. I just had a very strong feeling I would have liked him very much as a man," he said. "I admired him very much. I'm absolutely certain he would have done many wonderful things in his life."

Javier Bardem took the best supporting actor prize for his role as psychotic killer Anton Chigurh in the Coen Brothers' No Country For Old Men, which also won the award for outstanding cast in a motion picture.

With The Sopranos finally coming to an end, leads James Gandolfini and Edie Falco claimed the best actor and best actress prizes for TV dramas, while Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey, the stars of NBC's 30 Rock, took the comedy equivalents.

And another NBC series, The Office - an adaptation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Golden Globe-winning sitcom - won the award for best cast in a comedy programme.
