The National Football League has taken the unprecedented step of asking potential performers at the Super Bowl Half Time show to ‘pay to play’. Traditionally, the NFL doesn’t pay those it selects for the highly desired spot. If Music Was Chris Martin’s Saviour, Coldplay Turned Royal Albert Hall Into A House Of Worship

Chris Martin Coldplay Gwyneth Paltrow

Chris Martin is a man saved; by music, that is. The Coldplay musician has endured a tough year plastered over the tabloids with his recently divorced ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, propelled by the unforgivably grating 2014 buzzphrase, "conscious uncoupling."

In the midst of the gossip and gloom, Martin and his Coldplay bandmates released Ghost Stories, a melancholy album of electronica dabblings suffused with the inevitable emotional turmoil of a relationship breakdown. The British quartet brought their latest chart-topping record and a selection of other hits to London's Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday night for a stripped-back and intimate performance.

Inviting fans at the sold-out show to be as close as workably possible, Coldplay managed to make the gig feel a tenth of the size; an illusion helped by the seeming absence high vis-clad concert wardens, a photo pit or heavy onstage theatrics. Instead, the band placed an emphasis on the stripped back aesthetic to give a reassuring "calm after the storm" vibe.

Coldplay Nabs Fourth Number One Album, But Did Spotify Play A Role?

Coldplay Taylor Swift Beyonce Knowles

For a band that has been around for as long as Coldplay, you’d figure at some point they would be showing some signs of slowing down. After the first 18 years of my life, I can hardly walk up the stairs without losing my breath. However, the British rock quartet continues to find new ways to live healthy and reinvent themselves, and their new album, Ghost Stories, is no different: the band’s sixth full length debuted at number one on the Billboard charts this week with the biggest first week sales numbers so far in 2014.

Album sales may be down 15 percent versus the same week at this point in 2013, but that didn’t stop Coldplay for notching their fourth straight number one record. Oddly enough, Ghost Stories is actually the lowest first week out of all their number ones. It landed with 383 thousand sold, while 2011’s Mylo Xyloto moved 447 thousand, 2008’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends had 720 thousand, and 2005’s X&Y peaked at 737 thousand. Clearly, the industry ain’t doing too hot when the number ones are getting lower with each top debut, but Coldplay is still one of the biggest bands in the world. In fact, their trip to number one with Ghost Stories might just be the most impressive yet.

Emeli Sande may be adding to her growing list of accolades as she is newly nominated for two different awards at the 58th Ivor Novello awards.

Her UK number 2 hit 'Next To Me' is nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically as well as the Most Performed Work award. Competing in the former category is 'Laura' by Bat For Lashes and 'Two Fingers' by Jake Bugg while the latter category also sees nominations from Olly Murs' 'Dance With Me Tonight' and Coldplay's Paradise. Sande has previously received two Urban Music Awards, three BRIT, three MOBO awards and an ECHO Music Award among several others and she's definitely up for a chance in the Ivor Novellos as her nominated track was apparently the third most listened to track of 2012 - a pretty impressive achievement in itself, though not as impressive as the reception her number one debut album 'Our Version of Events' received!

Other artists nominated in two separate categories are Plan B with 'Ill Manors', which is up for Best Contemporary Song and Best Original Film Score, and Alt-J with 'Fitzpleasure' for Best Contemporary Song and 'An Awesome Wave' for Best Album. The awards ceremony will make its way to the Grosvenor House hotel in London later this Spring on May 16th 2013.

The crowning of Coldplay's album as the nations favourite marks a successful couple of BBC lists for the group, after a Radio 6 poll recently named the song 'Clocks', taken from A Rush of Blood to the Head, the top track on it's list of 100 greatest songs of the last century.

Madonna The Highest Grossing Touring Artist Of 2012

Madonna Bruce Springsteen Coldplay Pink Floyd

When it comes to the live tour, it’s the veteran artists of the music scene that are still leading the way on ticket sales. Billboard revealed the highest grossing tours of 2012 recently and it was perhaps no surprise that the ageing Queen of Pop Madonna came out top of the list – the 53 year-old seems to have been on tour constantly this year.

Reuters reports that the music chart and stat compiler had her earning an estimated $228.4 million from her 80 plus shows performed during the year. She’s not quite done yet either, with a couple more shows in South America due this week. She’ll be delighted to have beaten her rival Lady Gaga, who is in sixth spot with takings of $124.9 million from her Born This Way Tour; it’s worth pointing out though that Gaga is only midway through the jaunt at the moment, and won’t wrap up touring until finishing in the US in March 2013.

The rest of the top five is full of well-established names; Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were second with $199 million from 72 shows, whilst Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters was third with $186 million. Cirque De Soleil made an appearance in fourth with their homage to Michael Jackson taking $147.3 million from 183 shows, whilst Coldplay were fifth with $147.2 million from 67 shows. The list was compiled from estimated gross ticket sales.

Coldplay Live 2012

Coldplay live CD/DVD Cover

Albums of Note... Coldplay’s Live 2012 album shows a band far more at ease with themselves than their previous live release, from 2003. The Live 2012 package includes both blu-ray and CD. The footage is punctuated by behind-the-scenes interludes and these excerpts showcase each band member’s enthusiasm for their live shows as well as revealing how the material from Mylo Xyloto evolved over time and culminated with them band playing to a vast stadium audiences across the globe. “Live 2012 includes some nice musical moments... the low-key piano intro to 'Yellow', a guest appearance from Rihanna during 'Princess Of China', and the stripped back intimacy of 'Us Against The World'. All of the other elements of big choruses and sing-along's spanning the entire Coldplay back catalogue are present and correct… and Chris Martin's voice seems to have found a renewed strength to cope with the massive venues the band now fills.”

Coldplay Album Number 6 On The Way, Chris Martin Says

Coldplay Chris Martin

Dismissing rumours that Coldplay were going to be taking a three year hiatus, front man Chris Martin has spoken to the Daily Star to set the proverbial record straight.

"I've been writing songs and I'm so fired up about the band's future." Chris said, "I'm fortunate to do what I do and no way do I want to stop. This three-year break idea only came about because I said at a gig in Australia that we might not be back there for three years. That's probably true, but that's just how a world tour works. No chance are we taking a three-year break."

Having been going strong and almost non-stop since 1996 now, what keeps them fired up and making music? Well, according to Martin, it's charity that keeps them motivated and inspired. "If we don't work hard we make less money to give [children's charity] Kids Company. We're very spoiled and that's a constant motivator to keep going. Our work with the charity is ongoing. We just tried to buy a building for them near our studio in London, but got gazumped... It was probably Radiohead that outbid us."

Jay-Z And Coldplay Will Bring In The New Year Together At The Barclay Centre

Jay Z Coldplay

Jay Z and Coldplay have announced that they'll be performing on the same stage come December 31st of this year in Brooklyn's Barclays Centre in New York, it was announced on Jay-Z's website Life and Times, yesterday.

Where are you going to be spending your NYE 2012/13? If you're not going to be at the Barclay's Centre in Brooklyn, NY then you know you're not having the best night possible as that's where Jay Z and Coldplay will be performing. While Jay's website dramatically sported a poster with the two act's names, plus the date and place, Coldplay's website was a touch more 'polite', issuing a statement with more information about the upcoming gig. "This will be the second time in two years that Coldplay has celebrated new year with long-term friend and collaborator JAY Z, the band having shared the bill with him at a Las Vegas concert in 2010. More recently, JAY Z performed onstage with Coldplay at the spectacular London 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony," they said.

Almost unbelievably, "The two Brooklyn dates also mark the first Coldplay shows that have been put on sale in NYC since September 2005." Coldplay will also be playing two other shows before the NYE blowout, another at the Barclay centre on the 30th, and a futher date at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on the 29th. Both of these earlier dates will be supported by Naturally 7 and will not feature Jay-Z. Tickets will be going on sale this Friday (16th Nov. 2012).

Coldplay To Ring In The New Year With Jay-Z At Special New York Show

Coldplay Jay Z

It remains one of the odder friendships in the mainstream music sphere, yet Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Jay Z are still evidently as tight as ever – so much so that they’re going to be spending New Year’s Eve together. This isn’t just going to be a small gathering with Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyonce, a few plates full of left over mince pies and a crowd around the television to watch a tipsy Jools Holland try not to fall over whilst presenting his annual Hootenany, though; it’s been announced that Coldplay will be joining Hova for a show at the Barclay’s Center in New York – the first time the Brits have played the city for several years.

It’s not the first time the two acts have collaborated on New Year’s Ever: back in 2010 they both played live at a concert in Las Vegas. Their most recent live coming together meanwhile was earlier this year when they both played at the 2012 Paralympic Games closing ceremony in London.

Coldplay will also be playing a show at the Barclays Center the night before, on December 30, though these will not be with Jay Z according to the New York Times. The pair of dates will mark the first time the band have played the area since 2005.

Girls Aloud Break Hiatus For 10 Year Anniversary Album, Tour

Girls Aloud Cheryl Cole Nadine Coyle Coldplay

Girls Aloud are set to reunite for a tour next year following the upcoming release of their comeback/10 year anniversary album 'Ten'.

The girl band have been on a three year long hiatus since 2009, with their last performance taking place on September 18th 2009 at Wembley Stadium where they were supporting Coldplay on their tour. Since then, Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle all set out on solo careers with the former being significantly the most successful with two consecutive number one albums and one close behind at number two. The band are set to release their greatest hits album, 'Ten', in celebration of 10 years since they were first put together on TV talent show 'Popstars: The Rivals', going on to top the charts with their first single 'Sound of the Underground'. The album will include their brand new single 'Something New' which is due on November 18th following their first performance of the song on the BBC's 'Children in Need' program on the 16th. Cole, Roberts and Coyle have all expressed excitement at the comeback. 'We're really excited. It feels like nothing has changed', Cole told BBC News, while Roberts thought 'It was meant to be' and Coyle described the reunion as 'like a comfort blanket'.

Their 12 date tour will commence in Newcastle on February 21st after 'Ten's release on November 26th.

One Last Tour: Swedish House Mafia Bid Farewell To Their Fans

Swedish House Mafia Coldplay Usher

Swedish House Mafia have unveiled the dates for their farewell tour, Billboard have reported today (September 24, 2012). The three-piece announced earlier this year that they would be calling it a day but have decided to give fans one last chance to rejoice in the live experience and have called their worldwide adventure Swedish House Mafia: One Last Tour. The 26-date tour kicks off on November 16, 2012 in Dubai and continues on to India, Europe, South Africa and North America. The world tour will end on March 9, 2013 in Los Angeles.

Before they embark on their farewell tour, the band will release a compilation album on October 22, entitled Until Now. The first single from the album, Don’t You Worry, Child,’ was debuted last week. A deluxe version of the album will be available, which will feature remixes of Coldplay and Usher. In an announcement on their website, the band sent a message to their fans, saying “Today we want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last," the message read. "We want to thank every single one of you who came on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved.” Many have been bemused by the band’s decision to quit at such a high point in their career. Their headline set at Coachella 2012 is considered one of the best sets that they have played since they formed in 2008.

The band will be hoping that the concerts pass without trouble. Nine people were allegedly stabbed at their Phoenix Park concert in Dublin in July and three people were stabbed at a show in Milton Keynes later that month.

Rihanna Leads MTV Europe Music Awards Nominations With 6

Rihanna Coldplay One Direction Muse Taylor Swift Lana Del Rey Jay Z Nicki Minaj Kanye West Florence and the Machine Lady GaGa Rita Ora Mia

Rihanna has received 6 nominations for the MTV Europe Music Awards; more than any other act, reports The Telegraph. Muse, Coldplay and One Direction also pick up nominations.

The 24-year Barbadian star has been shortlisted for the awards for best song, best video, best female, best pop, biggest fans, and best look. Both ‘best song’ and ‘best video’ were for the same song, ‘We Found Love’ and ‘best look’ is a brand new category. She is up against Taylor Swift in the female, pop and look sections, whilst Swift was also nominated for best live and best world stage act. Other acts to be recognised, or at least they hope so, are Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj, Jay Z and Kanye West, all of which garnered three nominations each. Lady GaGa dominated last year's awards - held in Belfast - coming away with four awards and performing ‘Marry the Night’. This year she is also nominated for three categories.

Given the name of the awards, one would be forgiven for thinking that European acts are the most prominent, but it’s the Americans that continue to dominate year after year, and despite being held in Germany this year, that trend is set to continue. Great Britain represents the biggest European contingent with Muse Coldplay, Rita Ora, One Direction, Florence and the Machine, and M.I.A all hopeful to take home an award come November 11, 2012.
