Cynthia Nixon, the American actress best known for playing Miranda on HBO series 'Sex and the City' and the two subsequent feature films, has married her girlfriend Christine Marinoni. The couple tied the knot in New York on Sunday (May 27, 2012) after a three year engagement, reports the UK's Sun newspaper.
The pair announced they were to marry at a Big Apple protest supporting same-sex marriage, and legally married in the city this weekend. A spokesperson for Cynthia said, "On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York". Christine - an education activist - gave birth to the couple's son Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni in 2011, and the actress has two kids from her previous marriage to English professor Danny Mozes. The actress caused a stir during a New York Times Magazine article in January 2012, in which she said "For me, it is a choice", in regards to her sexuality. In a follow-up statement to the Advocate, she said, "My recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay. I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can't and shouldn't be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering".
Nixon received a Tony Award nomination for her role in the Broadway play 'Wit' earlier this year. The production - which opened at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on January 26, 2012 - featured the actress with a completely shaved head.
