After just a week on release, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' has already passed $100 million box office in the US and $300 million globally. It has claimed the title as the most successful R-rated film opening ever and it's Universal's best-ever opening in 30 territories. The movie is also one of the biggest grossing movies directed by a woman.

Ironically for a kinky romance, the film's $85 million opening in America claimed the record for a February release from Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ'. Cinema goers around the world have been behaving badly at showings of Fifty Shades of Grey. But it has nothing to do with fooling around on the back row! In Glasgow, three women were arrested after they assaulted a man during a screening on Saturday (14th February). The victim reportedly asked the rowdy women to be quiet during the film and in response they assaulted him. There were some reports a glass bottle was used to attack the unnamed man but the cinema denies an implement was used, according to reports in Vanity Fair. The three women in question were escorted from the cinema by police and have allegedly been charged with disorder offences.

Happy Valentine's Day weekend. Fifty Shades of Grey made $81,7 million. Clearly, despite the fact that noone will admit to having seen the thing, it's enjoying a stellar debut. Because what better way to spend the holiday than to watch a movie about whips, chains and contractually binding relationships with your sweetheart, right?

Apparently Fifty Shades has tapped into some deep-seeded desires in its audience. Or it's just really good marketing.

Fifty Shades, getting a boost from a Valentine's Day opening, was released earlier in the week in 57 foreign markets. It took in an additional $158 million overseas, for a global total of $240 million. It also got a boost from early Thursday night screenings, which made $8,6 million.

Fifty Shades of Grey looks set to break US box office records already, with early Friday estimates predicting the film to rake in as much as $85 million, according to Variety. The big screen version of the erotic novel opened in cinemas on Friday, just in time for Valentine’s weekend and all those couples looking for a 'romantic' night at the movies.
