Dan Harmon, the creator of the beloved “Community” is a frequent sufferer of foot-in-mouth syndrome. He does know how to make one heck of an apology though, which he’s had to do a lot of in recent years. His latest missive comes in the form of a Tumblr post, regarding Harmon’s most recent comments about Community’s fourth season. For those new to the story, Harmon got booted off the show after its third season because of disagreements with NBC, for which he later apologized (notice a pattern here?)

Community moved on without him, for a season, but both fans and critics were disappointed with the show’s direction, until Harmon was brought back for season five. Apparently, he wasn’t happy about the fourth season either, making some very explicit comments about it – namely that for him, watching that infamous fourth season was like "flipping through Instagram just watching your girlfriend blow everyone" and "being held down and watching your family get raped on a beach." Now, it’s easy to see why said comments got him in trouble with everyone – from the network and the “Community” team, to fans who objected against the writer trivializing a difficult topic like rape.

To his credit, though, Harmon apologized for all that and more on his Tumblr, pointing out that he was to blame for “not considering anyone’s feelings but his own” and for speaking before thinking: "After five seconds of thinking, I realized, as usual, that other people might be hurt, and that I really need to do this whole 'saying things and thinking about other people' cycle in a different order at some point," Harmon admitted. "I was very much not thinking about anyone but myself while watching that season, which was the crime [...] I was just indulging my petty feelings about being left out. It seemed kind of funny at the time because it seemed at the time like I was the only person with feelings."

He went on to issue specific "I'm sorry"s to Community fans, the show's cast and crew, and season 4′s writers. Even that final apology didn’t sound hollow and forced, because Harmon made sure to include specific examples of season 4 jokes he enjoyed. Clearly, the man is as good at apologizing as he is at ticking everyone off in the first place.
