Bradley Whitford Praises Jordan Peele And Daniel Kaluuya

Bradley Whitford Jordan Peele Daniel Kaluuya

Low-budget satirical horror film Get Out is turning into one of the early front-runners for the best movie of 2017, receiving ecstatic reviews and tearing up the box offices.

In a new interview, one of its cast members, Bradley Whitford, has attributed this to the vision of first-time director Jordan Peele and its talented young lead star, 27 year old British actor Daniel Kaluuya.

Get Out has been doing great business in the States since its release at the end of February, grossing over $84 million worldwide so far against its modest budget of just $4.5 million, with reports of many people going to the cinema to see it a second, or even third, time.

Extraordinary

A rare film that adds up to much more than the sum of its parts, this works as both a dramatic character study and a tense thriller. The title is Mexican slang for "hitman". And with fierce direction, razor-sharp writing and breathtakingly layered performances, this is one of the most involving, thrilling movies of the year. It also has something urgent to say about the political world we live in.

Kate (Emily Blunt) is the leader of an FBI unit in Phoenix, and is taken aback when offbeat Homeland Security agent Matt (Josh Brolin) asks her to join his team tracking a Mexican drug cartel kingpin. She brings her partner (Daniel Kaluuya) along, and they struggle to make sense of their new mission, especially the shady operative Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) who's working alongside them. The question is which organisation is actually running this operation, and what the real goal is. Clearly international laws are being bent at every step, and Kate is worried that she might also be compromising her moral and ethical principles. Meanwhile over the border, a local cop (Maximiliano Hernandez) is involved in activities that may cause trouble for his family and community.

Director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) keeps this story tightly under control, taking the audience along on Kate's odyssey into the dark side of international law enforcement, which has little regard for the law. Blunt brings a remarkable authenticity to her role as a steely, smart leader who is always on-edge, trying to find a way through an unpredictable situation. As she quietly reveals Kate's thought processes, the audience is able to identify with her at every step. Which makes every scene both riveting and emotionally wrenching. Opposite her, both Brolin and Del Toro are on top form, infusing the film with quirky details, black humour and challenging ideas. There's also an astonishing role for Jon Bernthal as a cowboy who flirts with Kate, and then some.

Dave and Mindy have been forced to abandon their Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl monikers following the defeat of ruthless crime boss Frank D'Amico and the death of Mindy's father Big Daddy. Dave goes back to his school life, while Mindy enrols alongside with him and struggles to fit in amongst her fellow female classmates. However, their 'normal lives' don't last when a new group of masked crime-fighters hit the streets led by the patriotic Colonel Stars and Stripes and they decide it's time to do what they think's right and join with them. It's just as well too, as D'Amico's vengeful son Red Mist has adopted a new alter-ego, The Motherf*****, and is attempting to rally an army of supervillains - with names like Black Death, Mother Russia and Genghis Carnage - to take Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl down.

Ben Daniels Is New Favourite For 'Doctor Who' Job: Could He Be The One?

Ben Daniels Doctor Who Daniel Kaluuya Ben Whishaw Sue Perkins Olivia Colman Jenna-louise Coleman Domhnall Gleeson Chiwetel Ejiofor Steven Moffat Matt Smith David Tennant Rory Kinnear Dominic Cooper

Ben Daniels is the latest name to become the favourite to inherit the role of Doctor Who in the long-running BBC series. Very soon there'll be very few British male actors who haven't been rumoured to be taking over the controls to the TARDIS as the Merlin actor now has the most favourable odds at 6/1. With previous odds of 16/1, Chiwetel Ejiofor (Salt, American Gangster) now closely follows Daniels at 7/1.

Could Ben Daniels Take Over From Matt Smith As The New Doctor?

However, chances are the new Who may not be a male actor at all; there have been calls for the new Doctor to be female, which would mark a first for the series which has run since 1963.

Kick Ass 2 Trailer

After their previous caped capering defeating mob boss Frank D'Amico, things seem back to normal for Dave Lizewski and Mindy who have abandoned their respective Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl monikers in favour of a regular high-school life. Mindy struggles to fit in, however, and when Dave tells her of the new generation of crime-fighting, masked civilians, the offer to get back on the streets of New York seems too good to turn down. This new league of superheroes is led by the formidable Colonel Stars and Stripes who encourages his co-crusaders, above all else, to have fun. Though when news of Red Mist, the son of the now deceased D'Amico who now dubs himself The Motherf*****, rallying together an army of supervillains to take on Kick-Ass and his cohorts, things seem less than enjoyable for the teenage heroes.

Welcome To The Punch Review

Good

After the tiny drama Shifty, British filmmaker Creevy turns to both Hong Kong and Hollywood for inspiration, creating an unusually glossy, explosive London cop thriller. But for all the sleek filmmaking and energetic action, the film struggles to make us care about characters who are dark and troubled. Their complexity is interesting, but not hugely engaging.

Adding to the visual sheen, the action is set among the gleaming glass and steel skyscrapers of Canary Wharf in East London, where detective Max (McAvoy) is still struggling to accept his inability to stop a heist three years earlier. The mastermind Jacob (Strong) managed to escape then, but he's back in town now, so Max is chomping at the bit to grab him. Max's lieutenant (Morrissey) tells him to back off, but he secretly works with his partner Sarah (Riseborough) to join the hunt. Meanwhile, Jacob teams up with an old pal (Mullan) to find out why one of the gang members (Harris) is on a murderous rampage. Which puts Jacob on a collision course with Max.

With so much full-on gunplay in a city where cops aren't actually armed, the film feels like it's set in some sort of parallel reality London. And Creevy augments this fantasy tone by indulging in shootouts that are sudden and brutal - like John Woo crossed with Michael Mann. The plot is full of clever twists, as motivations are revealed and a political conspiracy becomes apparent. It's all a bit convoluted and implausible, and the details are annoyingly murky, but within this premise the cast are able to find some emotional resonance.

Johnny English Reborn Review

Good
After the painfully unfunny 2003 original, a franchise was highly unlikely. And yet the spoof spy is back, and this film actually has several hilarious set pieces. It's not hugely consistent or clever, but this one's at least amusing.

After a disastrous mission in Mozambique, disgraced spy Johnny English (Atkinson) joined a Himalayan monastery. But MI7 boss Pegasus (Anderson) calls him back into service, and soon he stumbles into a nefarious plan to assassinate China's prime minister. But he's also of course causing havoc. Now the lead suspect, only the agency's sexy shrink Kate (Pike) and his sidekick Tucker (Kaluuya) still have faith in him. And as the murderous plot unfurls at a mountain-top Swiss hideaway, English makes a daring attempt to save the world and clear his name.
