The transgender actress and activist passed away on Sunday (11Sep16), aged 47, and among tributes from Hollywood and the world of music, fans of The Wedding Singer star have offered their respects and prayers to the Arquettes.

David, who was with his sister when she died, has tweeted his thanks to those keeping him and his siblings in mind, writing: "Thank you all for your love and kind words about Alexis. My hero for eternity."

His ex-wife Courteney Cox was among the stars who paid tribute to Alexis on Sunday, tweeting: "My heart goes out to anyone who was lucky enough to know Alexis. We will love and miss you forever."

Other notable tributes came from Roseanne Barr, Boy George, Rosario Dawson, Alyssa Milano, and actress Ellen Barkin, who quoted William Shakespeare's Hamlet and wrote: "Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. Beautiful tender soul Alexis Arquette."

The Arquette family released a statement shortly after the news of Alexis' death was announced via Facebook by brother Richmond.

Signed by her four brothers and sisters, it read: "She (Alexis) was a vanguard in the fight for understanding and acceptance for all trans people. She fiercely lived her reality in a world where it is dangerous to be a trans person - a world largely unready to accept differences among human beings, and where there is still the ugliness of violence and hostility towards people that we may not understand."

David, Patricia, Rosanna and Richmond continued the family tribute by calling Alexis "more than a sibling" and "our great teacher", adding, "As Alexis transitioned into being a woman, she taught us tolerance and acceptance. As she moved through her process, she became our sister, teaching us what real love is."
