Despite their formidable power as a family unit, David Beckham has rubbished claims that he and wife Victoria stay together for the sake of Brand Beckham.

Appearing on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs - and helping the show celebrate 75 years - David revealed he and his former Posh Spice wife stay together "because we love each other".

Speaking to presenter, Kirsty Young, the ex-England captain, who married Victoria in 1999 and is dad to Brooklyn, 17, Romeo, 14, Cruz, 11 and five-year-old, Harper, said: "People have talked about, ‘Do we stay together because it’s a brand?

"No, of course not, we stay together because we love each other. We stay together because we have four amazing children.

"We’re a strong family unit. We’ve got strong parents, we were brought up with the right values."

David, who once found himself in the spotlight after being accused of cheating with his personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, added: "Of course you make mistakes over the years.

"We all know marriage is difficult at times and it’s about working through it."
