Chris Walla Leaves Death Cab For Cutie, Where Do They Go Now?

Death Cab For Cutie Ben Gibbard Tegan and Sara The Postal Service

After a whopping 17 years at the forefront of iconic alternative rock band Death Cab For Cutie, lead guitarist and producer Chris Walla has announced his departure from the group. His exit comes after a decision to focus his creative energies towards other avenues. Walla formed the group alongside frontman Ben Gibbard and bassist Nick Harmer, who are now the only original members holding the fort. Together they produced seven albums, six EP’s and toured the world multiple times. Their blend of fragile alternative rock paved the way for what is now commonly known as ‘emo’, winning millions of fans worldwide through their melancholy songs that were often composed of lush instrumentation and unorthodox instruments.

But with Walla clearly tiring of the band’s direction, where will Gibbard and Harmer go now? Despite Gibbard, who also fronts the cult indie-electro band The Postal Service with Jimmy Tamborello, acting as the group’s main songwriter, Walla’s contribution to the band cannot be overlooked. He has played an integral role in producing and engineering each of Death Cab’s albums as well as lending his production skills to records by Tegan & Sara, The Decemberists and Hot Hot Heat. With Walla absent, Death Cab will have to seek outside help for future efforts. But the group are currently sitting on a fully completed album that has yet to see release- produced in part by Walla, and which will also see the departing guitarist touring to support the release. To ease the band in to an existence without Walla’s guidance, Death Cab employed co-producer Rich Costey for outside input.

Albums of Note... Coldplay’s Live 2012 album shows a band far more at ease with themselves than their previous live release, from 2003. The Live 2012 package includes both blu-ray and CD. The footage is punctuated by behind-the-scenes interludes and these excerpts showcase each band member’s enthusiasm for their live shows as well as revealing how the material from Mylo Xyloto evolved over time and culminated with them band playing to a vast stadium audiences across the globe. “Live 2012 includes some nice musical moments... the low-key piano intro to 'Yellow', a guest appearance from Rihanna during 'Princess Of China', and the stripped back intimacy of 'Us Against The World'. All of the other elements of big choruses and sing-along's spanning the entire Coldplay back catalogue are present and correct… and Chris Martin's voice seems to have found a renewed strength to cope with the massive venues the band now fills.”

Death Cab For Cutie, Codes And Keys Album Review

Whoever said that the meek shall inherit the earth would have probably felt pretty vindicated when Death Cab For Cutie's previous album, 2008's Narrow Stairs, reached the top of the US album charts on release. This was after all a band which, having been conceived originally as a solo project by lead singer Ben Gibbard in 1997, had steadfastly avoided signing to a major label until reaching a deal with Atlantic eight years later, and one which had supported both filesharing and animal rights as part of an ethical backwash seemingly out of sorts with their new unit shifting status.

If Narrow Stairs and its accompanying off-cuts EP The Open Door marked a triumph for stickability and being true to your principles, it also ensured that any follow up would be under the microscope from many perspectives. Fans who've been around since the band's formative noises on Something About Airplanes and We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes will be relieved to hear that the trappings of quasi fame certainly haven't gone to Gibbard's head; Codes And Keys is mercifully free of contributions from a brass section, Kanye West or the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
