Actress Debra Winger is campaigning to have a dead friend's diary turned into a required reading text for America's colleges.

The URBAN COWBOY star was godmother to LAURA ROTHENBERG, who lost her battle with cystic fibrosis earlier this year (03), and now she'd like teenagers to read about her short life.

Rothenberg's diaries, which detail her struggles with cystic fibrosis, have been turned into a new book, BREATHING FOR A LIVING, and Winger is determined for college kids to read about her friend's life.

She says, "Laura and I were more like girlfriends. She was always upbeat and there was no false hope about her. I think the perspective the book gives on how to live your life each day is pretty amazing."
