We didn't want it to be true, but sadly Demi Lovato and her boyfriend of six years Wilmer Valderrama have announced their break-up, leaving us to wonder if true love really does exist. In a week which has already seen the demise of Taylor Swift and Clavin Harris, Demi and Wilmer’s break-up is the most shocking of all, as many thought the couple would finally be walking down the aisle soon.

In a joint statement posted to both their social media accounts, Demi and Wilmer wrote: "After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realised more than anything that we are better as best friends."

“We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.” In January, the couple had celebrated their six-year anniversary together, with Demi posting a cute collage of pics on Instagram.

Demi and Wilmer started dating in 2010, just after Demi turned 18. The couple stayed together through Demi’s battles with addiction and eating disorders and the singer often credited her boyfriend for helping her with her sobriety.

In March of last year Demi celebrated three years of sobriety and paid tribute to Wilmer saying she ‘wouldn't be alive today without him’. “He's loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober,” Lovato wrote on Instagram.

“After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery... he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is. I really wouldn't be alive today without him. I love you Wilmer”

As recently as last month Demi had gushed about Wilmer to Latina magazine. “He’s very manly, and he can be stubborn like Latino men can, but he’s protective and he cares so much and loves so hard,” she said. “I’ve been blessed enough to have him in my life, and not just as my man, but also my best friend.”
