Demi Lovato has credited Beyoncé and the Kardashians with revolutionising how we perceive beauty. The 22-year-old singer recently posted an image on Instagram showing how her figure has changed over the years and how she's now happy to embrace her curves.

Lovato posted an image on Instagram on Monday (25th August) which showed, side by side, her figure over the years starting when she was 16 at the MTV Video Music Awards. Six years on and Lovato expressed how "beautiful" she feels and how happy she feels not to be forced to conform to an ideal which is impossible to acquire. She wrote in the Instagram caption: "It makes me sad because I wasted so many years ashamed of my body when I could've been living the happy and healthy life I live today. It TRULY just goes to show you that your perceptions can lie to you."

In a recent interview with , Lovato explained her thinking behind her Instagram post. She explained how a fan had created a similar image and she realised how she had truly looked and felt at 16. Lovato said "I looked at the very first time I'd been to the VMAs and I looked so bony and fragile and unhappy. Yes, I was at the VMAs and I was sixteen and I was having an incredible time but I was miserable." She further explained how she now feels so much more comfortable in her own body and stated, "I'm so happy that I'm healthy today and I have curves which are a lot sexier than what I was aiming for then. Now I think curves are beautiful and I feel great."

Lovato also addressed how she feels about women with curves being admired and in positions of power and influence within the media. She explained how the perception of beauty has changed from "extremely underweight" models and actresses to women such as Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian who have revolutionised "what our generations view, and perception, of what beautiful is." 

Lovato was particularly keen to emphasise the Kardashian's role in changing views and perceptions. Of their "huge impact", Lovato said "You can think whatever you want about the Kardashians but they really did help tonnes of women feel comfortable in their own skin." Alongside Beyonce and the Kardashians, Lovato praised Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson and Sofia Vergara for having "amazing" yet "realistic and achievable" figures.
