BBC To Re-Create Lost 'Doctor Who' Episodes As Animations

Doctor Who

The BBC has announced it will be making an animation of a lost ‘Doctor Who’ story dating from 1966, to be released later this year on the 50th anniversary of their original air date.

The Geek TV Shows We're Not Afraid To Love

Geeks: once the deeply awkward and much-maligned members of society- ridiculed by Jocks and long stereotyped on TV and film as socially inept weaklings with a love of bow ties, thick-rimmed glasses and high-waisted slacks. But oh how things have changed. Ever since Adam Brody’s intensely loveable Seth Cohen appeared on screens in the mid noughties as the lonely, quick-witted, Death Cab For Cutie loving geek on The O.C, the tables have been well and truly turned. ‘Geek Chic’ prevails, the once laughable clothing choices of society’s most brainy and introverted have been re-appropriated by the masses. Everyone is falling over themselves to replicate a look that twenty years ago would have posited the wearer of such garments as a human punch-bag for meat-headed bullies.

Adam Brody Attends Premiere Adam Brody has been credited with helping makes geeks cool through his O.C character Seth Cohen

In the world of TV, sci-fi shows such as Star Trek and Stargate are geek staples but the recent role reversal of geeks as the cultural vanguard posits fantastical shows that would have more likely been derided several years ago as universally acclaimed hits. Game Of Thrones is arguably the biggest TV show in the world whilst The Big Bang Theory, which maintains the long-held geek stereotypes has made veritable superstars of its cast. Here then, is a list of those geeky TV shows that we just can’t get enough of.

Years Of Hard Work Have Led To This, Peter Capaldi On Life Before 'Doctor Who'

Peter Capaldi Doctor Who

Look at us, Peter Capaldi hasn’t filmed a single scene as Doctor Who and we’re already talking about his ‘life before Doctor Who’. In Capaldi’s case, though, the examination of circumstance prior to his recent ‘promotion’ in the acting world is a story worth telling.

See, actors’ lives are normally eulogised, even in movies, played by actors themselves, as things of beauty; the fast cars, champagne, glitzy premieres and mansions are all part of the job. And this is true, but only for George Clooney, really, and that’s mainly to do with his beard.

Even the reverse fortunes actors face is romanticized: living in squalor, scraping up enough money for a bottle of wine and a bus ticket to the next audition. It’s all made to look like the most glamorous thing ever, and not a nice man and woman thinking about selling their moderately nice house because of a money shortage.

Matt Smith announced last week that he is to step down from the role that made him a household name, leaving the door open for the 12th Doctor in the show's 50 year run to step into Smith's shoes. As the 11th white actor to play the Time Lord moves on to bigger things, there is a strong demand from the public for the next Doctor to break the mould a little a bring in the first female or ethnic actor to take on the role.

The man behind the momentous return of the show, Steven Moffat, has already green-lit a change from the norm and the mounting pressure to introduce a bit of diversity on the show may prove too much for the people in charge of casting at the BBC. Still, a quick look at the odds for the next Doctor seems to indicate that things won't change too much at all, with the top odd all being designated to various white, male actors.

The top three tips for the next Time Lord are Cutting It star Ben Daniels, Irish actor Damien Molony (of Being Human fame) and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens, with former Doctor Who sidekick Billie Piper and Kinky Boots star Chiwetel Ejiofor the favourite non-white males to take up the mantle. Neither of these two make much sense though, as having a former sidekick regenerate as a Doctor would be too weird even for the Doctor, whilst Ejiofor is frankly too good and too established an actor to make the move to television when he should really be one of the main names to take up Daniel Craig's place as James Bond or being offered Oscar-worthy roles instead.

Following Matt Smith's Exit, Dr Who Producers Are Toying With The Idea Of Introducing The First Female Doctor

Matt Smith Steven Moffat Doctor Who

Matt Smith announced this week that he will step down from his role as the current Time Lord on the ever-popular and long-running BBC series Dr Who following the airing of this year's Christmas special. Needless to say, the show's producers are currently compiling a list of potential replacements for Smith, however there is word that they may make a surprise casting choice by hiring the first female Doctor the show has seen.

Producer and head-writer Steven Moffat will look to put his ever-lasting stamp on the show he helped return to the public zeitgeist, by introducing the historic character development. The Mirror reported the potential casting decision on Sunday (June 2), following the news the Smith was due to leave.

The paper alluded to a comment made by Moffat at the Edinburgh TV Festival in 2012 when he discussed the unpredictability of the Doctor and that having a female Time Lord is a very feasible idea. He said, “It is a part of Time Lord lore that it can happen. Who knows, the more often it is talked about the more likely it is to happen some day.”

Original Doctor Who Director Slams Modern Show's Sexuality

Matt Smith Doctor Who

The original director of Doctor Who has criticised the modern day version of the programme for its new-found sexuality. William Hussein worked on the original version of the show, when William Hartnell played the Time Lord. In an interview with BBC Radio 4, he said “There is an element now, and I know we're living in a different era, of sexuality that has crept in.” As the show approaches its 50th anniversary show, Hussein questioned the need for a sexual slant on the show, saying “Why bring in this element when in fact you needn't have it there?”

The Time Lord is currently played by Matt Smith, who has been in the role since 2010. He is now joined by a new female companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman. Hussein is clearly not enamoured with the sexual tension between the two actors and explained that it had never been necessary in the earlier series of the show, when the likes of Peter Purves and Carole Ann Ford graced our screens. “The intriguing thing about the original person, was that you never quite knew about him and there was a mystery and an unavailability about him… Now we've just had a recent rebirth and another girl has joined us, a companion, she actually snogged him.”

The aforementioned Time Lord of yore, Peter Purves was in agreement with Hussain, as well, stating “The original series was so simple. They were very straightforward, nice linear stories that one could follow.”

A Stellar Cast: David Tennant Leads Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Cast

David Tennant Doctor Who Joanna Page Matt Smith John Hurt Jenna-louise Coleman

David Tennant will lead a stellar cast for the forthcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special. The former Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page will also join the cast, as will Billie Piper, who was once a Doctor Who star herself. Current stars Matt Smith, John Hurt and Jenna-Louise Colman will all appear in the special episode which is due to start filming this week, according to The Daily Mail.

Joanna Page recently gave birth to her first child and it’s not clear which role she will take, though she attended a recent read-through for the forthcoming special. Back in 2010 when it was rumoured that she may appear in Doctor Who, Joanna commented “I think I’ve got to be the only Welsh actress who has never been in Doctor Who so if someone would like me to be in Doctor Who I would love the part.”

Both the 10th (David Tennant) and 11th (Matt Smith) Time Lords will appear in the show, which will be screened in cinemas in November, according to the report. The show’s producer Steven Moffat is working hard to ensure that the content of the anniversary programme stays under wraps. “One length I've gone to which is a really good security measure - I make sure I don't get a script, because I will lose it. I forbid people to hand me one. It's on my computer under lock and key.” Matt Smith explained “It's about looking back and forward at the same time, a bit like the Doctor does. It's about celebrating everyone that's been involved with it, all the wonderful actors that have taken part before me, and it's also about looking forward.”

As Fans Await Doctor Who Movie, Dalek Designer Raymond Cusick Dies

Doctor Who Reece Shearsmith Mark Gatiss

The designer of Doctor Who’s most famous cyborgs, the Daleks, has died, at the age of 84. Raymond Cusick, from Horsham, West Sussex, created the pepper-pot villains and also developed their sinister gliding motion. Despite the fact that the armoured cyborgs have become an integral part of the Doctor Who legacy – along with their notorious catchphrase “exterminate!” – Cusick has previously revealed that the process of designing them wasn’t exactly an easy one.

According to the Daily Mail, Cusick said that the original Daleks “rattled like an old biscuit tin” and pneumatic wheels had to be added to them to stabilise them. The ‘pepper pot’ design had been decided on after he was showing one of the programs special effects experts, Bill Roberts, how he envisioned the Daleks moving around: he picked up a pepper pot and moved it around the table, explaining “it’s going to move like that – no visible means.” Mr Cusick died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday evening, his daughter confirmed. He is survived by two daughters and seven grandchildren.

Cusick’s death comes in the 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who. A planned Doctor Who movie, reportedly entitled An Adventure In Space and Time will detail the origins of Doctor Who, according to Entertainment Weekly. League of Gentleman actor Reece Shearsmith has been cast in the role of Patrick Troughton. Fellow LoG star Mark Gatiss is onboard as the screenwriter.

Dr Who's Tardis To Land On E-Book Format

Doctor Who

Dr. Who has been to many weird and wonderful lands; battling snow men in Victorian London recently, but he won't have found himself in many strangers than e-book readers and smart phones.

And that's because Eoin Colfer, is due to launch a series of short stories to be written by a  well-known children's authors, staring on 23 January, with A Big Hand for the Doctor. Talking to The Guardian, Colfer explained he was drawn to writing on the Doctor because, "he is a bit of a grump".

"Subsequent Doctors became more chipper and almost childlike and I found the first Doctor interesting because he was not so developed and I could have a little leeway with the character," he said. "As a boy I had been reading the Doctor Who books for years before I ever saw a single episode," he said, "and I found that the on-screen version of the first Doctor was almost identical to the version in my imagination."

Could Doctor Who Christmas Special Be The Best Episode Yet?

Matt Smith Doctor Who

The Doctor Who Christmas special - set to air on Christmas Day - features new music, new titles, a new costume and a sleek new Tardis, according to The Guardian. Writer Steven Moffat has promised plenty of surprises in the forthcoming episode, which stars Matt Smith's new sidekick Jenna-Louise Coleman.

"They [the new episodes] are immense, they are considerable and they will be full of tremendous surprises," said Moffat at a special preview of the Christmas episode, "We're not going to tell you [any details] but I promise we're going to take over television, trust me." It appears to be an ambitious instalment of the long-running drama - a 60 minute special featuring a seasonal splash of romance and Richard E. Grant, among others. Set in Victorian London, the episode follows the Doctor as he grieves the loss of Amy and Rory, though meets Clara (Colman) - his new companion. "I felt like I was on a blind date for a while . it's like putting two people together, 'Oh I know someone you'll really get on with - now go on and save the world," the former Emmerdale actress said of joining the cast. In other Doctor Who news, Moffat ruled out that Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock would ever share screen time with the Time Lord, "The doctor would just be furious because there would be someone else clever and tall in the room, and that's his job.Can you imagine it? They'd just stand there and sulk at each other," he said.

Doctor Who: The Snowmen airs on Christmas Day, 5.15pm, BBC1.

New Poster For Doctor Who Christmas Special

Doctor Who Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

In what’s fast becoming a Christmas tradition for families up and down the UK, the Doctor Who Christmas Special will once again be landing on BBC TV screens, and it seems like the broadcasting company are fully aware of its popular status, with first a new trailer and now poster making the production values of the forthcoming episodes look like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster.

The Daily Mail reports that the promotional poster shows the Time Lord, played again by Matt Smith, clinging on to a ladder, held on to in turn by his new assistant Clara, played by Jenna-louise Coleman. The pair look like they’re trying to climb the ladder in order to reach a sky-bound Tardis, whilst snowflakes fall around them to London below – Big Ben sticking out of the murk. This year the enemy that the Doctor must overcome is played by Richard E. Grant; as Dr. Simeon, he commands an army of vicious snowmen to do his bidding.

Normally cocksure and plucky as the Doctor, Smith’s character will have a somewhat different demeanor this time round, given that previous assistant Amy Pond was lost to him at the end of the last series. As executive producer Steven Moffat explained in a previous statement, "The Doctor at Christmas is one of my favorite things -- but this year it's different. He's lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angels, and he's not in a good place: in fact, he's Scrooge. He's withdrawn from the world and no longer cares what happens to it. So when all of humanity hangs in the balance, can anyone persuade a tired and heartbroken Doctor that it's time to return to the good fight. Enter Jenna-Louise Coleman..."

BBC Release Trailer For Dr Who Christmas Special

Doctor Who Matt Smith

The BBC have released a sneak peak of the upcoming Dr Who Christmas Special titled 'The Snowmen,' with the good Doctor, played by Matt Smith and his latest sidekick, played by Jenna Louise Coleman, introducing the trailer now available on the BBC's website.

The trailer doesn't reveal too much, however we do know that the episode will air on Christmas Day and will give us our first peak at Coleman's character Clara. For those Dr Who die hards out there then you wont need telling that Coleman has already appeared in the show, playing a seemingly different character in this season's premiere, 'Asylum of the Daleks' earlier this year. Given the nature of the pair's intro to the snippet, it looks as though we wont have to worry too much about them having a lack of chemistry, as they appear very much at home in each other company as they tease the viewer over the nature of the sneak peak.

The Christmas special has been written by lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, and will see the Doctor once again crossing paths with the part human, part reptile Silurian Madame Vastra (played Neve McIntosh) and her unimaginatively named companion Jenny (Catrin Stewart).

Piper Bans Husband From Watching Dr Who

Doctor Who Billie Piper Laurence Fox

Doctor Who star Billie Piper has banned her actor husband Laurence Fox from watching the hit British TV show - because she can't stand seeing herself onscreen.
The 25-year-old actress left the sci-fi series in 2006, but is set to reprise her role as the Timelord's sidekick Rose later this year (08).
And Piper admits she won't let her new husband watch any of the programmes - in case he chances upon an episode with her in it.
She says, "He has never seen an episode of Doctor Who with me in it because I won't let him.
"I get really edgy watching myself, and I get even more edgy with my loved ones because they know me and I feel they're going to take the mickey (make fun of me).
"Sitting down to watch my performances makes me cry. It's even worse watching it with another actor, because he can dissect your performance."
Piper and Fox married on New Year's Eve (07) and are expecting their first child together.

Ozzy: I Can't Remember Bike Accident

Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath Doctor Who Kelly Osbourne Sharon Osbourne

Rocker Ozzy Osbourne has revealed that he can't remember anything from his quad bike accident in 2003 which left him in intensive care in a UK hospital.

The former Black Sabbath frontman is a guest on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross tonight on BBC1 and discusses the accident with Ross, which occurred just days after his last appearance on the show.

"I can't remember what happened, my heart stopped twice, the first thing I remember was seven days later but I was only going at three miles an hour. I always used to say I'm going to die by the time I'm 40, I always thought something like that would happen to me," Ozzy said.

Ozzy, 58, also spoke of his two children, Jack and Kelly Osbourne, who were thrust into the spotlight during their teenage years on the TV reality show which was filmed at the Osbourne's home.

"Overnight they were celebrities and didn't know how to handle it. [Now] Jack's great, he goes round and lectures in schools, tells them his story, young people can relate to him," the rocker said.

"At the beginning [the TV show] was great fun but then it got really tiring. You'd get a creepy feeling there was a camera around you all the time even when there wasn't."

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne's home in Buckinghamshire was burgled in 2004 and Ozzy tackled an intruder who managed to get away with a valuable quantity of jewellery.

"I sleepwalk a lot, I was naked," the rocker said. "There was this guy bent down. I thought 'am I dreaming?' Like a fool I ran at him and then thought 'now what', so I just let him go."

Also appearing on the chat show tonight are Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman and presenter Justin Lee Collins.

The programme will be shown on BBC1 at 22:35 BST.
