Dr. Dre has responded to claims he was violent to women during the 1990s, the era in which he rose to fame as a member of N.W.A. Dre was accused of assaulting a female journalist in the early 90s and has since faced allegations of abuse from his girlfriend at the time, singer-songwriter Michel'le.

Speaking during an interview with Rolling Stone for the August edition of the magazine, Dre directly responded to the allegations.

"I made some f**king horrible mistakes in my life," says Dre. "I was young, f**king stupid. I would say all the allegations aren't true – some of them are. Those are some of the things that I would like to take back. It was really f**ked up. But I paid for those mistakes, and there's no way in hell that I will ever make another mistake like that again."

Dre allegedly attacked rapper turned journalist Dee Barnes in a nightclub in Los Angeles in January 1991. Barnes was the host of the show Pump It Up and, according to reports in Rolling Stone, the attack was in retaliation for a report on the show which Dre and the rest of N.W.A. perceived as damaging.

Barnes, in a statement acquired by Rolling Stone, detailed the assault. In the statement, Barnes described how Dre "began slamming her face and the right side of her body repeatedly against a wall near the stairway.” She attempted to escape to the women’s bathroom but Dre reportedly followed and continued his attack. He "grabbed her from behind by the hair and proceeded to punch her in the back of the head."

At the time, Dre did not deny assaulting Dee and even boasted about it in a Rolling Stone interview from the same year.

"People talk all this shit, but you know, somebody f**ks with me, I'm gonna f**k with them,” Dre said in the interview. “I just did it, you know. Ain't nothing you can do now by talking about it. Besides, it ain't no big thing – I just threw her through a door."

Dee pressed charges against Dre. He was placed on probation for 2 years, fined $2,500 and ordered to complete over 200 hours of community service. 

Dre’s interview coincides with the release of Straight Outta Compton, the biopic which follows the rise of N.W.A. to fame during the 90s. The film does not reference the accusation of Dre’s violence against women and the portrayal of women in the film, and the group’s lyrics, has been widely criticised.
