British pop star Duncan James has undergone emergency surgery to treat a slipped disc.
The Blue singer was hospitalised on Thursday (09Jun16) for an operation on the slipped disc, which had damaged his nerve. He is expected to remain in a London hospital until the weekend (11-12Jun16) and will then recover from home, his manager Paul DH Baylay said.
"Duncan James did have emergency surgery yesterday afternoon for a prolapsed herniated disc which had fragmented onto his nerve canal. He was in surgery for around three hours," Paul told WENN in an email.
He expects Duncan to be "back on his feet sooner rather than later" as he is "fit and health conscious".
His emergency operation has caused concern for his acting commitments. The singer was due to star in the U.K. touring production of the musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert until 18 June (16), and he was due to follow it up with his new role in U.K. soap opera Hollyoaks, which could now be delayed.
“Duncan slipped a disc and damaged a nerve," a source tells Britain's Daily Mirror. "It was pretty bad. He had a small section of the disc removed to ease pressure on the spine.
“He has theatre commitments with Priscilla that are now in jeopardy... And he could have to delay his start date for Hollyoaks if he doesn’t make a speedy recovery.”
It was announced last month (May16) that Duncan, 38, would be joining the cast of Hollyoaks as Ryan, a "grounded family man" and "good guy in a committed relationship". The character is set to debut later this year (16).
"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Hollyoaks team," Duncan said with the announcement. "I'm looking forward to working with the fantastic on and off screen talent on the show and bringing the character of Ryan to life."
While still best known for being in boyband Blue, Duncan has been carving out an acting career with stints in West End shows Chicago and Legally Blonde in recent years.
