Deepwater Horizon Review

Good

This reunion of actor Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg feels like a natural successor to their previous collaboration Lone Survivor, another true story adapted into a movie that wallows in both heroism and violence. This film recounts the events of April 2010, when a drilling rig off the coast of Louisiana exploded, creating the biggest oil-spill in US history. It's the story of the people who were working there, and while there's a clear attempt to honour the memory of the 11 men who died that night, the cast and crew also want to create an entertaining action-disaster movie.

Wahlberg plays Mike, the chief technician on the Deepwater Horizon, an oil platform more than a half-hour flight from land. As the film opens, he kisses his wife (Kate Hudson) and daughter goodbye and heads off for a three-week shift alongside boss Jimmy (Kurt Russell), drilling foreman Jason (Ethan Suplee) and pilot Andrea (Gina Rodriguez). When some discrepancies delay their work, Mike finds himself under pressure from the corporate boss (John Malkovich) to get on with the work and get back on schedule. Under order to ignore some questionable safety tests, they carry on drilling until the well erupts, triggering a massive ball of flame.

After the increasingly tense build-up, the movie becomes a more traditional disaster movie, as characters run for their lives or dive into the inferno to save someone. Some of this is cleverly conceived and played out, including several striking set-pieces. But the main focus here is on rah-rah courage. The most heroic roles go to Wahlberg, Russell, O'Brien (as a driller) and Kirkpatrick (as a crane operator). While Malkovich chomps deliciously and villainously on the scenery. But the most engaging role goes to Rodriguez as a woman who is genuinely terrified about what's happening but still manages to do her job. She's the only person on-screen who feels like a real person, and the irony isn't lost that she's also the only woman among this crew of macho tough guys.

The Maze Runner Sends More Teens Into A Dystopian Challenge

Dylan O'Brien Thomas Sangster Will Poulter Kaya Scodelario

It's another month, and another group of teenagers is taking on yet another oppressive post-apocalyptic society. Based on the first in a trilogy (of course!) of books by James Dashner, The Maze Runner is slightly unique due to its decidedly male approach: three dozen boys trying to navigate an imposing conundrum. And the film even includes a cast of rising-stars who make it worth a look, including Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf), Will Poulter (We're the Millers) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually), plus Kaya Scodelario (Skins) in the token female role.

Is 'The Maze Runner' The Next Big Young-Adult Movie?

Kaya Scodelario Dylan O'Brien Shailene Woodley

Just as everyone was beginning to get really hyped up for Shailene Woodley's upcoming flick Divergent it looks like another movie may be just about to steal its thunder. You've got to act fast in this business (or you'll get hunted down, if these movies are anything to go by!).  Based on the series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner certainly looks like it will be worthy of joining the list of big box office movies based on young adult books.  Over the past few years movies aimed at a young adult audience, such as the Harry Potter series, Twilight franchise, The Hunger Games and currently Dviergent, have been vastly popular, drawing in huge audiences of young adults and adults alike.  They've definitely become a guilty pleasure, whether you're 15 or 50 years old.

The Maze Runner
Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien will star in The Maze Runner

Starring Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien, The Maze Runner seems to be a solid contender to challenge The Hunger Games and Divergent in action and story, although unlike the other two movies, this one has a male lead. We think we’ll allow a boy to take control for once, there has been a lot of girl power in movies lately, we feel like we've had our fix!  Although no one could rival The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen in our eyes.

The Internship - Clip

Former salesmen Billy and Nick are left unemployed after the owner of the company that they work for decides to become an internet only business rendering their door-to-door techniques obsolete. In a bid to get back on the career ladder, Billy manages to land them an online, webcam interview with internet giant Google which, admittedly, could've gone better. After initially establishing themselves as illiterate in the way of computers by shouting at their potential employers through a machine at a public library, they managed to cause them great alarm, not to mention confusion, with an animated description of what they would do if they were shrunk to the size of a nickel and placed in a blender. An odd question for a job interview, but possibly not one this wacky duo haven't thought about before.
