Massive news hit the literary world on Monday, as it was announced that there’s to be a sequel to the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ series. E.L. James announced to the world via social media that she’s to release a new version of her first book as told from Christian Grey’s point of view.

‘Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as told by Christian’ will be released on June 18th (the same day as the fictional character’s birthday). The three original books, that have sold a combined total of 125 million copies around the world, were all told from the perspective of shy student Anastasia Steele, who is drawn into a BDSM relationship with the successful entrepreneur Grey.

On Monday morning (June 1st) she wrote on Instagram “Hello all. For those of you who have asked, Christian's POV of #FSOG is published on 18th June for his birthday. It's called GREY... I hope you enjoy it.” Accompanying the post was picture of the new book’s front cover.

Further details arrived later in the day. “Christian is a complex character,” said James in a statement provided by her publisher Vintage / Knopf Doubleday, “and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past. Also, as anyone who has ever been in a relationship knows, there are two sides to every story. It’s been a great pleasure to return to my happy place – writing, being with Christian and Ana in their universe, and working with the fantastic publishing teams in the US and the UK.”

So that’s the biggest selling book of 2015 wrapped up! With only a little over a fortnight until the publication date, this is something of rushed release, but Knopf Doubleday’s president Tony Chirico assured fans of the series that enough copies will be produced to satisfy demand.

James’s editor Anne Messitte at Vintage also gave a reaction: “’Fifty Shades of Grey’ is a love story that has enthralled readers in a way that few books have, and when Erika mentioned to me that she wanted to explore Christian's viewpoint and re-open the story, I was incredibly excited for her and for her readers. This book has all the compelling attributes of its predecessors, and I can't wait for Fifty Shades fans to experience the work again from a perspective they have long desired.”
