Even famous footballers have people that they admire and Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie showed the world that Ed Sheeran is their preferred style of singer after attending his second Manchester gig on Tuesday night. The two strikers saw Sheeran perform at a sold out gig at the Phones 4u Arena as part of his first ever UK tour.

Rooney posted a picture of himself with the singer-songwriter, with the caption: "Had a brilliant time at the Ed Sheeran concert last night. Thanks for a great night mate!"

Van Persie was also impressed with his night’s entertainment and tweeted a picture of the 23-year-old star with the words: "Just experienced a great performance by @EdSheeran. He’s so talented, what a voice!"

While Sheeran clearly pleased these football professionals, he inadvertently got professional referee, Mark Clattenburg, into trouble at the weekend.

The top-flight umpire has been dropped from officiating a Premier League match this weekend for breaking protocol after he left the West Brom and Crystal Palace match to drive to Newcastle for the Sheeran gig.
