After taking home the Best Actor Award at this year’s Oscar ceremony, Eddie Redmayne is reportedly high on the list of Warner Bros' choices to star as Newt Scamander in the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Director David Yates has already signed onto the project, which is expected to hit cinemas in November of next year.

Eddie RedmayneRedmayne won an Oscar earlier this year for Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything.

According to The Wrap, Redmayne is Warner Bros. choice to star as Newt Scamander in what will be a trilogy of films, with author Jk Rowling penning the script. The Wrap reports an insider close to the situation as saying it is unclear whether Redmayne has met with Yates to discuss the project, but the actor has yet to see a script.

Warner Bros has declined to comment on the reports about Redmayne, but The Wrap writes it has independently confirmed the studio’s interest in the British actor.

The other name said to be on WB’s list is Mad Max: Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult, with studio execs said to be thrilled by his performance in the George Miller action movie. However if Hoult doesn't land the Fantastic Beasts’ role the studio is expected to find another massive property for the actor.

The story of Magizoologist and author Newt Scamander will be set in New York decades before Harry Potter and is based on his Hogwarts' textbook Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Alongside Scamander the film will also have four other main characters, two American girls and two American boys.

“Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series but an extension of the wizarding world,” Rowling explained in 2013 when the project was announced.

"The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets underway.”
