I Saw The Light Review

Weak

Writer-director Marc Abraham gets ambitious with this biopic about iconic country music star Hank Williams, but the film is far too choppy to provide much insight. Leaping through the decades without much context, the film never explores what made Williams such an important artist, so it's difficult to understand the impact of his tragic death at just 29. That said, Tom Hiddleston shines in the role.

Cutting around in time, the film shows Hank (Hiddleston) as a young man with a singular vision: he's determined to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. His young wife Audrey (Elizabeth Olsen) and his mother Lillie (Cherry Jones) argue about who will control his career, but Hank just gets on with it, relying on help from music publisher Fred Rose (Bradley Whitford). Finally at 26 he gets his first No 1 single, and lands a spot at the Opry, becoming a fast-rising superstar. But the chronic back pain he has suffered since childhood leads him into alcohol and drug abuse, which of course begins to take a toll on his career as well as his friendships, marriage and health.

The film skips around Williams' life, moving on to the next scene before this one seems quite finished. This means that the story is never able to build up any momentum, and also that each fragmented period of time feels under-explained. And the people around Williams appear and disappear at random, so the actors never get any traction in their roles. Hiddleston does find moments of resonance, simply because he's in every scene in the film and establishes a bit of rapport with the audience. It's also astonishing that he performs the songs himself. But Abrahams's approach to storytelling never offers any insight into Williams' fame, talents or personal life.

Captain America: Civil War Review

Excellent

After the formulaic thrills of The Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron, Marvel's Avengers were in danger of getting stuck in a rut, but a smart script for this surprisingly focussed thriller kicks everything into a new direction. What's surprising is that the screenwriters have managed to incorporate a wide range of characters without the film ever feeling overcrowded. Each person has a journey to travel, so the actors get a chance to invest plenty of personality into the action.

After the events of Ultron, there's a political debate about the need to oversee the Avengers' missions. Iron Man Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) thinks a special UN council is a good idea, but Captain America Steve (Chris Evans) thinks that will limit the team's ability to help people. Then Steve's best pal Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is framed for a bombing, and Black Panther T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is drawn into the fray. The Avengers are forced to take sides, with those supporting Bucky becoming outlaws. Tony recruits Spider-Man Peter (Tom Holland) to his team, while Steve drafts in Ant-Man Scott (Paul Rudd). And as they all face off against each other, none of them realise that this entire situation is being manipulated by a vengeful man named Zemo (Daniel Bruhl).

Watching this film requires the audience to suspend disbelief that these super-powered friends could be pushed to try to kill each other. That never quite makes sense, and indeed the script acknowledges this fact when one person goes down and everyone reacts emotionally. But the high-powered cast is so good at creating these intensely driven superheroes that it's not difficult to go with it.

Captain America: Civil War Trailer

The Avengers are suffering from an image crisis. As much good that they do and as many lives that they save, the superheroes also cause unlimited amounts of damage to cities and civilisation. The government wish to find an answer to this problem and they decide that all superheroes should be registered and held accountable for their actions.

Tony Stark is brought in to begin talks on behalf of The Avengers, knowing how much damage he's personally done under his superhero disguise, Stark see the government's point and decides that a register wouldn't be entirely unwelcome. Captain America on the other hand has no such wishes; The Cap sees any government intervention as something beyond reasonable requirement. In the middle of all this is Cap's old friend Bucky who could be prosecuted under the new laws. As The Avengers are forced to split into two halves, it looks like there's going to be no way for the old team to form any kind of agreement.

As their opinions deepen and rivalries are deepens, certain members of Hydra begin to tighten their control and their plans for future domination of the world are getting stronger. The Avengers must find a way to put their differences aside in order to beat the real enemy.

I Saw The Light Trailer

I Saw The Light is the new biopic about Hank Williams. The film follows his personal life and rise to fame and his tragic death at the age of 29. Having released 30 singles in a very short amount of time Hank Williams became one of the US's favourite musicians.

Having begun work in the music industry recording tracks for a radio station, eventual turn of events and the war led Williams onto starting a solo career. Both his mother and his wife played a huge part in his musical success with his wife Audrey initially managing him which led onto Hank being signed to MGM Records.

Hank always wished to be the best father he could to his child, but constant time on the road, an addiction to pain medication, alcohol topped with his promiscuous ways lead to an unstable home life, despite the wholesome image the outside world had of him.

This upcoming movie appears to be less tongue-in-cheek than the 1998 version starring Matthew Broderick but certainly boasts a larger budget and more terrifying creature as the central focus of this action movie.

"Avengers: Age Of Ultron": New And Improved (Maybe) Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver Character Design Revealed

Elizabeth Olsen James Spader Aaron Johnson

The Scarlet Witch of the Marvel cinematic universe doesn’t look too faithful to her comic book counterpart, but fans should probably still be glad that she and brother/co-conspiritor Quicksilver are making it into the movie franchise. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver make regular appearances in the comics and it will be interesting to see how Joss Whedon and co. bring them into the Age of Ultron plot.
For now, those interested will have to settle for the concept art for the two characters, which was recently revealed in the ABC special Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe. The designs for the two characters might have some hardcore fans up in arms, but generally, they look appropriate for the Avengers movie going crowd.

Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen has been chosen for the role of Quicksilver.

Quicksilver’s look doesn’t seem to have undergone too many changes, but then it’s hard to make a more basic version of a blue bodycon outfit and windswept hair. So the cinematic Quicksilver will resemble a Fantastic Four team member, without any of the uniform details. Disappointingly, it looks like the design team has also done away with his trademark white lightning across the chest (as well as the white hair,) but other than that, there hasn’t been much tweaking here.

Elizabeth Olsen Engaged, But Where Is Her Career Headed?

Elizabeth Olsen Boyd Holbrook

The younger (and much taller) Olsen sister, Elizabeth Olsen, has become engaged to boyfriend Boyd Holbook. The pair have been dating for over two years now and began living together in Brooklyn just a few months ago. Holbook obviously enjoyed living with Elizabeth so much that he just knew she was the girl for him!

The news comes not at all long after Elizabeth’s big sis, Mary-Kate, announced her engagement to French banker, Olivier Sarkozy. We wonder if a double wedding could possibly be on the cards? Or would that be reserved for the twins if Ashley decides to get hitched to current beau, 47 year old director Bennett Miller. Perhaps a triple Olsen wedding? Although both Mary-Kate and Ashley's partners have quite a few years on 31 year old Boyd!  There would be quite a range of guests at the wedding!

Kill Your Darlings Review

Very Good

Even though it's slightly too mannered, this true drama takes a clever approach to the beat poets long before they were famous. It's also packed with shocking twists and unnerving details that help us get emotionally involved in the story. And while the complexity of the approach kind of leaves us on the outside, sensitive performances help us see beneath the surface.

Set in 1943, the film centres on Allen Ginsburg (Radcliffe), who has been encouraged by his poet father (Cross) and needy mother (Leigh) to attend Columbia in New York. There he befriends the transgressive writer Lucien Carr (DeHaan), whose secret mentor-boyfriend David (Hall) is actually writing his coursework. Through Lucien, Allen is introduced to the druggy lifestyle of intense artist William Burroughs (Foster) and rugged womaniser Jack Kerouac (Huston). And together they decide to change the world. Then a shocking murder alters the dynamic between these young men.

The film's title is age-old advice to artists: you have to get rid of the people closest to you if you want to truly express yourself. And of course the fatal plot twist is an ironic exploration of this idea, as the film delves into shadowy corners of artistic anarchy, drug use and sexuality. (Radcliffe's notorious gay sex scene is strikingly well-played and pivotal in Allen's journey.) Filmmaker Kokidas infuses each scene with dark artistry: the actors look achingly cool even when they're wallowing in a trashy, immaculately production-designed drug den.

Radcliffe For An Oscar? ‘Kill Your Darlings’ Snapped Up At Sundance

Daniel Radcliffe Elizabeth Olsen Amanda Seyfried Harvey Weinstein

Kill Your Darlings, a movie starring Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe as a young Allen Ginsberg, has been snapped up by Sony Pictures Classics following its screening at the Sundance Film Festival. The deal is for U.S, Australian, New Zealand, South African, African TV and Eastern European rights.

The film explores how a 1944 murder brought together the young college students who would go on to become the voices of the Beat Generation. As well as Radcliffe, Kill Your Darlings stars Ben Foster, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, Jack Huston and Elizabeth Olsen. “This is an amazing movie, a great American drama, thriller, and perfect evocation of New York in the 1940′s as you have never seen on screen before,” Sony said in a statement. “With an ensemble cast that is truly mind-blowing led by Daniel Radcliffe in a profoundly moving performance as Allen Ginsberg, we are witnessing the birth of a major new American filmmaker.”

There has certainly been a clear buying trend at Sundance 2013, with Radcliffe’s movie the latest to be snapped up in super-quick time. The most high profile acquisition was The Way, Way Back – a comedy starring Steve Carell, Toni Colette and Sam Rockwell that Fox Searchlight thought was strong enough to splash $10 million on. The film has a pretty decent pedigree, with Academy Award winning writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash getting behind the camera for their debut flick. Elsewhere, Jennifer Coolidge’s comedy Austenland found a home at Sony ($4 million), though all eyes were on big-wig Harvey Weinstein, a man known for picking up undiscovered gems at film festivals and turning them into Oscar contenders. This year, he opted for Fruitvale, a drama starring The Wire’s Michael B. Jordan that focuses on police brutality. “I was completely amazed by this incredible film. This earth-shattering story is one that needs to be told, and we are honored to be able to share Oscar’s story with audiences everywhere,” said Weinstein in a statement.

Annabel seems unsure whether or not she’s ready to look after them. Little does she know, however, that she’s opened the doors of her home to more than just the two young girls, who disappeared the day that their mother was murdered by their father. More of a psychological horror than a guts-n-gore kind of movie, del Toro knows exactly how to get inside the viewer’s mind and linger there, with his superb use of special effects and the kind of suspense tactics that will require the surgical removal of your fingers from the cinema seat by the time the movie’s over.

“Mama succeeds in scaring the wits out of us and leaving some lingering, deeply creepy images ...” Richard Roeper – Chicago Sun-Times

Named On The BAFTA Rising Star List, But Just Who Is Elizabeth Olsen?

Elizabeth Olsen

Elizabeth Olsen? I’ve never ruddy heard of her!” you might be saying, perhaps rubbing your glasses to make sure they’re clean for comic effect. Certainly there weren’t many who were aware of the American actress as she was revealed as one of the BAFTA’s (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Rising Star list for 2013; that’s sort of the point, really, these aren’t stars yet. They are stars-to-be, nevertheless we'd better do some explaining for you.

So who exactly is she? Well the surname might give it away a bit. No, she’s not related to former Manchester United winger Jesper Olsen (as I’m sure you were all guessing), she’s the younger sister of entrepreneurial millionaires Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen! Bearing an uncanny likeness to the pair, Olsen has also – like them – initially made her way in the acting world. She made a big impact in the 2011 film Martha Macy May Marlene, which saw her play a young woman suffering from delusions and paranoia after returning to her family from a cult in the Catskill Mountains. The performance saw her take a win at the Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards for Best Actress, among others, as well as picking up a host of nominations elsewhere including at the Independent Spirit Awards for Best Lead.

A quieter year followed last year, but Olsen has four roles set to be released this year, with beat poet drama Kill Your Darlings, the Demi Moore-starring Very Good Girls, Therese Raquin  - based on an 1867 novel - and the Spike Lee-directed Old Boy. With such a diverse range of films, it’s clear that Olsen’s talent is burgeoning, and we think that the BAFTA might well be right to have named her as one to watch.

Silent House Review

Good
A remake of the 2010 Uruguayan thriller, this is reportedly based on a true story. Shot as if it was filmed in a single continuous take, this claustrophobic horror film sends chills down our spines. But instead of deepening the story, the growing creepiness becomes an exercise in superficial horror: it's scary, but it's hard to care.

Sarah (Olsen) is working with her father John (Trese) and her uncle Peter (Stevens) to clean out a family-owned lake house that's been trashed by squatters. Sarah is clearly unnerved by the blacked-out windows, requiring the use of lanterns inside even during the daytime. Then she starts hearing loud noises upstairs. And when Peter is out getting supplies and her father is in the basement, she sees someone stalking her in the shadows. Soon she's running for her life. But even when she gets outside, she simply can't escape the house.

Martha Marcy May Marlene Review

Excellent
With a disturbing tone and skilful filmmaking, this insinuating drama completely unsettles us as it delves into the mental life of its central character. And it has a lot to say about how relationships affect us.

After going missing for two years, Martha (Olsen) phones her sister Lucy (Paulson) for help, then goes to stay with Lucy and her husband Ted (Dancy) in a lakeside house. Martha says she's been living with a boyfriend, but actually she was in a cult-like commune with her friend Zoe (Krause), working a farm under the leadership of the charismatic Patrick (Hawkes). Renamed Marcy May, she was coaxed into sharing everything there, including her body, and now she's not quite sure what's real and what isn't. And also whether she actually got away.
