Katy Perry Races To The No. 1 Spot On The ITunes Chart With Early Release Of 'Roar'

Katy Perry Ellie Goulding

Katy Perry's comeback may be more eagerly anticipated than we first thought, as her comeback single 'Roar' needed only a few hours to race all the way to the top of the iTunes chart when it was release on Sunday (1 September). The single was actually released earlier than expected, a full week in fact, as Perry apparently couldn't wait to bring out her new single any longer.

Katy Perry VMAs
Katy's comeback single tasted immediate success when it was released early

The first single from her strangely titled upcoming third album Prism, the unexpected early release did the trick for Perry as she watched the song storm the iTunes chart and knock Ellie Goulding's 'Burn' from the number one spot. Still, she may have stormed the iTunes chart, but Perry was unable to knock Ellie Goulding from the top of the Official UK Singles chart, where she managed to stay for a third successive week on Sunday (1 September). Given the lateness of it's release, we doubt whether Katy was banking on her single doing so well in the first place, so she can probably look forward to battling for the top spot during next week's chart countdown.

The entertainment isn't just resigned to the match schedule though, as the full weekend of entertainment will also see American Idol winner Phillip Phillips performing on Saturday during the day, which will coincide with the time-honoured Skills Challenge, the Three-Point Contest and Slam Dunk Contest — all of which will be presided over by Nick Cannon.

Ellie Goulding was among the stars who turned up for Fearne Cotton's festive special

It was fun and games at BBC Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton's house this morning (December 21, 2012) as the imminently expecting disc jockey invited a host of friends around for a live broadcast of her show. This week's been a tough one for Cotton, with it being revealed that her ex-boyfriend, Ian Watkins of the Welsh band Lostprophets, was arrested and remanded in custody on charges of a sexual nature; how great then that her celebrity pals rallied around her for this festive edition of her show.

Tom Odell, Brits Critics' Choice Winner Discovered By Lily Allen

Lily Allen Tom Odell Emeli Sande Jessie J Ellie Goulding

The up-and-coming British songwriter Tom Odell has been named as the winner of the Brits Critics’ Choice Award. He got his break in the music industry when a friend of Lily Allen’s took her to see him play and she was instantly drawn to the singer’s talents. Odell recently released his debut EP ‘Songs From Another Love’ and has expressed his surprise at learning that he’s been awarded the accolade of Critics’ Choice – becoming the first ever male artist to do so.

“I genuinely can’t believe it. Thank you so much. Looking at the list of amazing female artists who have won the Award already, I just hope I don’t let the boys down!" said Odell. Lily Allen – now known as Lily Rose Cooper – had already tipped Tom for success in NME, revealing “I went to see him play and signed him to my label straight away. His voice is fragile yet powerful and he sings mainly love songs. I'm not usually a massive fan of singer-songwriter stuff, but when I saw him live his energy onstage reminded me of David Bowie. It's not soppy and moany at all, it's energetic and insightful. And he's totally gorgeous as well! Blond hair and blue eyes, and simply just lovely.”

The Critics’ Choice award is chosen by a panel of industry insiders every year and is awarded to an artist who is yet to have released a debut album. Previous winners have included Emeli Sande, Jessie J and Ellie Goulding.

On The Shelves: UK Album Release Round-Up, October 29, 2012: Neil Young, Madness, Kylie Minogue, Calvin Harris, Skyfall OST

Psychedelic Pill is the 35th studio album from Neil Young and was written and recorded in collaboration with his sometime band, Crazy Horse, marking their first album of original material since Greendale in 2003. As with many of Young’s latter-day releases, the quality is less than consistent. Reviews from The Guardian and the Independent suggest that Psychedelic Pill contains “moments of majesty,” (The Independent) as well as some less impressive tracks. It’s unlikely that any of this week’s releases are going to shake Taylor Swift from her throne at the top of the UK album chart but with reassuring reviews in the mainstream press, Psychedelic Pill should prove popular amongst Young’s considerable fanbase.

Also released today is the interestingly-titled Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da, by veteran ska-pop band Madness. It’s the tenth studio album from Madness and contains 14 new tracks, as well as cover art from the ever popular pop-art legend Peter Blake (he designed the cover for The BeatlesSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band). The Guardian gave the album an impressive 3 stars out of 5 but can Madness really recapture the youthful exuberance of their glory days, with this latest album? It seems unlikely that they’ll continue to enjoy the success that they experienced in years gone by.

A Week In Music Featuring: Ellie Goulding, Green Day, Paloma Faith, Axewound, The Vaccines And Much More!

Albums of Note... That 'difficult second album' phase is probably even more difficult when - in between your first and second album - you have performed at the Royal wedding, had your songs splashed all over the TV, dumped one of the UK's best-known radio DJs (Greg James) and started dating one of the United States' best-known producers (Skrillex). Ellie Goulding seems to have done a solid job of navigating the pressures of retaining her identity, whilst no doubt being squeezed by her record label. Overall though, Halcyonis not quite the blast of personality that we expected from Goulding: "The most disappointing thing is that they've not even really allowed Goulding's voice to flourish. She has a vocal that's pleasant if not exactly stand out, but all life in it's been stamped out through auto-tuning and correction, the singer sounding as though she's being possessed by the spirit of nothing at all."

A Week in Music - October 16, 2012

Tall Ships are beginning to gather serious momentum on the live circuit in the UK and their debut album, Everything Touching cements that reputation. It's by no means a perfect debut but Tall Ships are already breaking free of the 'math rock' parameters that have been loosely placed about them. "The majority of the ten tracks are instrumentally intense with sounds overlapping and complimenting each other. An intriguing debut from Tall Ships, but there's just a spark missing. They should cut down on the instrumentals and replace with some words because, when they're used, the science and instrumental beauty are amplified perfectly."

Green Day 'pap' shot.

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon Album Review

The have and have not of artistic credibility used to be pretty clear cut in the UK music scene in the 1980s. You had your pop stars, appearing on Top Of The Pops, wearing ridiculous costumes, spending (in the case of the really successful ones) hundreds of thousands of pounds on the blossoming music video phenomenon. Then you had your surly looking bands, sullen of expression in their hand-me-down clothes, earnest of word and writing music that was jumped upon and praised by the leftfield music press, but ultimately still left them sharing a scabby bedsit in the arse end of suburbia. It was clear; one group just wanted everyone to sing their song enough to want to go and buy it, the others believed they were artistically expressing themselves, whether to the detriment of the listener or not.

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon Album Review

That's been changing ever since the turn of the 90s, from when the Stone Roses decided they would rather play to 20,000 people on an island than a few hundred at a Barfly, to when the BBC decided they were going to take a closer order of alternative music and started sending all their cameras down to Worthy Farm to cover Glastonbury, to Blur, Oasis and Britpop suddenly becoming commercial and political commodities and on and on ad infinitum. The point is that over the last twenty or so years this mythical 'indie cred' has become high profile and highly profitable. The BBC Sound of 2010 list, where we first met Ellie Goulding, has always tried to give the impression that the artists it's championing are the alternative; they're the bands, the underground producers and rappers. Yet there is no 'alternative' once you reach that level, winning the Sound list becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as you find yourself plastered on billboards, shown on the red button, welcomed into the music industry and given a Best Rising Star award at the BRITS so that everyone can slap themselves on the back and say, 'look, we were right all along!'

Which is why artists like Ellie Goulding rankle, because there's no doubt that the team around them only have profit in mind, and yet the marketing behind it tries to convince us that they're pedalling something of substance. Here's a thought; have you ever seen the 25-year-old in a live promo picture without holding a guitar? It doesn't happen often, because that outdated notion of guitars = indie still exists in the major label offices. Additionally, with Goulding, she's being pushed as the sort of girl-next-door, who underneath it all is still just a singer songwriter earnestly pouring her heart out. On this album they've given her room for two songs that do just that, non-entities called 'I Know You Care' and 'Dead In The Water'. Interviews see her still try to talk about recording techniques she's developed and experiments with sounds; yet listening through Halcyon doesn't really reveal much other than the sort of bland, all-the-EQ-up noise war production that's become common place as labels desperately attempt to shout louder than the rest, in order to clasp the pitiful drain of money that's coming into the industry.

Ellie Goulding's Halcyon: A Soundtrack For Your Engagement Proposal

Ellie Goulding One Direction Mumford And Sons

Ellie Goulding's Halcyon hits shelves on Tuesday (October 9, 2012) and has its sights firmly fixed on the upper echelons of the Billboard chart. It seems domestic success isn't good enough for the Hereford born star and Goulding is likely to emulate the recent US success of British offerings from Mumford And Sons, and One Direction.

The majestic lead single from the record, Anything Could Happen, has already featured in a commercial for Beats By Dre and looks likely to chart high in the U.S. singles chart. However, in conversation with MTV News, Goulding revealed her more far-reaching ambitions for the track, "I'm hoping it will make people go out and propose to their girlfriend and do that holiday they never ended up doing," she said, adding, "I hope it will provoke positivity as opposed to making people really sad." Though her 2010 debut 'Lights' suggested Goulding would continue down the EDM path, the 25-year-old appears to have moved in a different direction with her sophomore effort, "I've got more influences and different influences.I think it's a different sound. It is kind of a bit more tribal, a bit more anthemic.

Goulding will begin a mini-tour of the United States and Canada in New York on October 11, 2012, before heading to the Sound Academy in Toronto (14th), the Troubador in Los Angeles (16th) and Amoeba Music (17th).

New Direction? Taylor Swift Goes Dubstep On ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’

Taylor Swift Britney Spears Muse Skrillex Ellie Goulding John Mayer

Taylor Swift goes dubstep on ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’? The country music star has always had one foot in the mainstream pop arena but Taylor Swift’s new song is really something else. She’s not the first to dabble in a spot of dubstep, of course; Britney Spears famously did it, with her track ‘Hold It Against Me,’ released last year and more recently, Muse have let elements of the formerly underground dance sound into their music. Dubstep may have originated in Croydon, in the UK but now that Skrillex has popularized the genre Stateside, it seems that everyone wants a piece of the action. Might as well do the whole ‘female singer-songwriter goes dubstep’ thing before Skrillex’s girlfriend Ellie Goulding gets in on the action, eh?

Taylor Swift debuted the track on Good Morning America and introduced the song by saying that it was one of her favorite tracks from the new album Red “It sounds just as chaotic as the feeling was when I wrote it. It’s a song about kind of being frustrated with yourself, because here you are heartbroken, and you knew when you first saw that person, you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway.” She doesn’t speak about her new love of dubstep but the production on ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ is undeniable. It basically sounds like classic Swift, but with added ‘whomp’!

Fans will be left wondering if this new direction has got legs, or if Taylor’s going to stick to traditional country ground from now on. And, of course, they will be wondering which of her unlucky exes the song’s about! John Mayer, perchance?

Will It Be Halcyon Days For Ellie Goulding's Second Album This Weekend?

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding has returned with her second album Halcyon with a lot of pressure on the shoulders of the 25 year-old to repeat the feats of two years ago. In 2010 she topped the BBC Sound of 2010 poll and went on to top the UK album charts and break the top 30 of the American Billboard charts, selling over 1.5 million copies of debut LP Lights.

Halcyon came out this week and, if the critics' reaction is anything to go by, then it's hard to tell whether it's going to hit quite the same peaks. The good comes from Entertainment Weekly, who write "Halcyon could have gone for easy crossovers. But the album is slightly too weird for that--and that's what makes it good." In the UK The Telegraph comment "Her second album, however, belatedly delivers on all Goulding's latent promise", whilst The Fly add that the album "is a bold and confident step forward."

The Independent and The Guardian are less impressed though, the former claiming "It's a well-crafted, stylish piece of work. But it's hard to love songs that try to hide" and the latter adding "The main flaw of Halcyon is that it occasionally feels a bit too much." Nevertheless, it's currently sitting pretty with an average of 72% on reviews aggregating site Metacritic, and given the promotion her label Interscope have given it, we're pretty sure it'll be entering the upper echelons of the charts this week.

Ellie Goulding Influences Boyfriend Skrillex (Not The Other Way Round)

Ellie Goulding Skrillex

Ellie Goulding has insisted that she and her boyfriend Skrillex are 'absolutely not' like Kylie Minogue and Michael Hutchence.

'I read someone comparing our relationship to when Kylie met Michael Hutchence but it's not like that - drugs etc', she told The Sun in an interview. 'It's absolutely not that. I did all that stuff when I was young. I've always been bright and I'm sensible enough now to not be so easily influenced by someone.' The singer, who rose to fame with her hit cover of Elton John's 'Your Song', admitted that she wasn't always so sensible. 'I've always been an absolute rebel. When I was in my teen years I had piercings and wore all black. I smoked and drank and did what all my mates did around me', she confessed, adding, 'I was never a 'sensible one'.'

In fact, the 25-year-old says that Skrillex (real name Sonny Moore) is actually influenced by her rather than the other way round. 'I read somewhere that I made him feel more secure', she said. '[People] ask if I've copied his hair too but I had mine first!'

Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Soundtrack Listing Finally Announced

Green Day Passion Pit Ellie Goulding Skrillex St. Vincent Feist Christina Perri Stephenie Meyer James Vincent McMorrow Paul McDonald Nikki Reed Reeve Carney

The tracklisting for Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 has finally been announced, via Yahoo and amongst the highlights of this latest instalment are Green Day, Passion Pit and Ellie Goulding. Green Day, obviously are a pretty big coup for the compilers of the soundtrack (Summit Entertainment release the album in collaboration with Chop Shop Records and Atlantic Records) and the band’s bass player Mike Dirnt spoke to Yahoo! about contributing their track ‘The Forgotten’ and said “When we were asked to be part of the 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the 'Twilight' soundtracks are so carefully curated.”

Ellie Goulding’s track will draw attention to the soundtrack too, not only because it’s an exclusive track but because it’s the first track that she’s released, to have been produced by her new boyfriend Skrillex. Following in the vein of slightly kooky female artists, St. Vincent and Feist have both contributed a track; both will undoubtedly make an excellent accompaniment to the dark, moody atmosphere of the Twilight movie.

Coming from a slightly more mainstream angle, Christina Perri returns with ‘A Thousand Years (Part Two)’. Naturally, it’s a follow on from her theme to the first installment of Breaking Dawn and Perri was almost a dead cert to be included on this final musical bow. She’s such a fan of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga that she has the word ‘Bitten’ tattooed on her, in the Twilight font. She told Yahoo! “I am so honored and excited to be involved again in this final film and soundtrack.” She revealed that part two of the track will be different but hasn’t yet said how and the tracks are yet to be released. “It's not the same [as the original]... you'll just have to wait and see how,” she teased.
