Just months after the pair reconciled following a near 10-year bitter relationship, Sir Elton John expresses his shock and his sadness that his mother Sheila Farebrother has passed away this week at the age of 92. The last time he saw her was just one week ago.

Sheila died this morning (December 4th 2017), around 8 months after getting back into contact with her 70-year-old son. Sir Elton revealed the news in a moving post on social media just hours after he became aware of the tragic news.

'So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning', he wrote on Instagram alongside a photograph of the two of them. 'I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much.'

Elton and Sheila reconciled in April this year after the singer faced a 'potentially deadly' bacterial infection which left him 'violently ill' on a flight to Chile from the UK. He ended up in intensive care, which is presumably when he decided to heal his suffering relationship with his mother. The following month he posted a tribute to her for Mother's Day in the US on Twitter. 'Dear Mum, Happy Mother's Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton', he wrote.

It seems the two of them first fell out back in 2008, when she refused to break contact with two of Elton's friends despite him having severed his relationship with them. But things got a whole lot worse when she made a series of nasty comments about Elton's husband David Furnish, despite having previously got along with him quite well.

'It upsets me but, to be honest, I don't miss her', Elton said previously, according to the Mirror. 'When she says things in the press like, 'I haven't spoken to Elton since he married that f***ing a***hole David Furnish'. That was pretty hard to take. I don't hate my mother... but I don't want her in my life.'

As tragic as the news of her passing is, one can only be thankful that Elton got some final days of peace and friendship with her.
