Our Guide To Record Store Day 2017

Bastille Bruce Springsteen Emeli Sande David Bowie The Cure Prince

Much has been made of the ‘vinyl revival’ in albums sales over the last five years or so, with old-fashioned records going ever upwards while CD sales and download sales plateau or tumble. The upsurge in the format’s popularity is in part because of Record Store Day.

Record Store Day 2017Record Store Day 2017

Taking place on a Saturday every April, RSD is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017, after it was founded to help out struggling independent record stores that were struggling to compete with supermarkets and the likes of HMV (now, streaming and downloads).

Emeli Sande Is The 'best' Artist

Emeli Sande

Emeli Sande is the ''best'' artist Wyclef Jean has ever worked with.

The 29-year-old singer and songwriter has been praised for ''incredible'' melody schemes and for penning great lyrics by the 47-year-old artist, who has hinted he is a huge fan of Emeli and has been for while.

Speaking to XXL Magazine, Wyclef - who has been joined by Emeli on the new track 'Carnival Vol. III: Road to Clefication' - said: ''Emeli Sande is one of my favourite singers in the world. I stalked Emeli Sande. We started actually working at Puffy's studio, Bad Boy and then after that we went to my studio.

The figures are up and it's now been revealed that 2013's biggest selling album in the UK was Midnight Memories by the world's biggest boyband One Direction.

Though it's not surprising that the fetching fivesome have landed the victory with their new album presenting their third consecutive number one, they were in for some strong competition with the likes of Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events coming in at number 2, despite it landing her the top spot in 2012 and thus launching her music career.

The recording industry is a goldmine for the UK, as a recently published report by UK Music reveals. The music industry has been estimated at combined value of £3.5 billion per year – this takes into consideration the combined earnings of the industry’s 100,000 employees, as well as annual earnings from record sales. The figure is much higher than previous estimates.

One Direction are yet again set for another official UK chart number one with their newly released album, Midnight Memories. The five-piece boyband have topped the midweek charts, outselling the rest of the top five combined and are rocketing towards snatching the fastest selling album of the year title from Daft Punk's Random Access Memories which moved 165,000 units in its first seven days.

After having been on sale for just three days, Midnight Memories has shifted 145,000 copies and has pulverised both Gary Barlow's Since I Saw You Last and Robbie Williams' former number one, Swings Both Ways in the charts listings, according to The Guardian. 1D's album has already sold more copies than the quintet's 2011 debut, Up All Night, bucking the trend for diminishing returns seen so frequently in pop music.

Made In America Festival 2013

The Budweiser Made in America Festival 2013 was jampacked with highlights from some of the most iconic artists of the age, as well as some of the best up-and-coming stars and the hidden talent you'd be a fool to have missed.

Taking place over August 31st and September 1st in Philadelphia, the Saturday kicked things off with some impressive acts. Feisty California sisters Haim performed early on in the afternoon with a thoroughly entertaining set, in terms of both music and audience interaction, on the Liberty Stage where other must-see artists such as Deadmau5, 2 Chainz and triple BRIT winning Emeli Sande also thrilled the crowd. The Freedom Stage saw the likes of Rudimental further establish their place in the hearts of a large proportion of festival goers, while the Skate Park Stage saw much smaller bands such as Ohio group Cloud Nothings and New Jersey D&B duo Brick & Mortar get the ultimate chance to showcase their talents. The main Rocky Stage was, of course, the real crowd bringer, with Beyonce headlining and Phoenix and Imagine Dragons delivering the uttermost electrifying rock shows of the night.

Various Artists - 'Dermot O'Leary Presents The Saturday Sessions 2013' Album Review

Dermot O'Leary's Saturday Sessions Allbum Review

Using a tried-and-tested formula of acoustic versions and covers, this most recent instalment of the series sees further performances for Dermot O'Leary's radio show now available to own.  The artists included cover a broad spectrum, from near-unknowns to arena fillers, and predictably results vary from the terrific to the terrible.

A brave and successful take on 'Eleanor Rigby' from Emeli Sande begins proceedings, while Will Young reminds us of his vocal talent on a lovely rendition of Blondie's 'Hanging On The Telephone'.  The classic Jackson 5 number 'I Want You Back' loses its magic in the hands (or should that be voice?) of Rachel Sermanni, but the running is immediately rescued by The Do taking on Kings Of Leon's 'Sex On Fire'.  They morph the rock anthem into a chill-out moment and in vocalist Olivia Merilahti have a fantastic talent.  Of those presenting their own material, Florence + The Machine and Jessie J give solid presentations of 'Never Let Me Go' and 'Price Tag' respectively, while Robbie Williams' altered performance of 'Candy' does well to take it away from sounding like an advertising jingle and make it a folk-style sing-a-long.

An ill-advised attempt at Blur's 'Song 2' from Plan B begins the second disc in horrendous manner, something that becomes all the more surprising once you hear the beautifully soulful version of 'Empire State Of Mind' gifted by Maverick Sabre.  Miles Kane gives a decent rendition of The 'Stones 'Play With Fire' before Dry The River provide a highlight of this release with a lovely cover of 'Homeward Bound', originally by Simon & Garfunkel.  A trio of British bands close out this record and, for an act with such a fierce live reputation, Kasabian's 'Days Are Forgotten' is limp to say the least.  By contrast, the Manic Street Preachers bring a raucous 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough' and Athlete provide a stirring 'Wires' - a worthy selection as the latter book-end.

Last night’s Brits ceremony could well have been the blandest Brits in years. Aside from a frisson of post-breakup tension between Harry Styles and Taylor Swift (who took to the stage wearing a sexy black hot-pant jumpsuit with gold embellishments) there was little in the way of shock, surprises, or backstage gossip (or if there is, it hasn’t made it’s way down to us yet!).

It might be the Brit Awards 2013 tonight, but as far as the press were concerned, it was a star from the US who captivated them as the stars arrived for the UK's musical industry awards showcase this evening in London (February 20, 2013). Much has been made of Taylor Swift and Harry Styles both being at the event tonight, and it's believed that they're to keep kept apart; that's just as well because if he gets a sight of Taylor tonight we reckon he'll be itching to get back together with her.

Forget The Gongs, What's In This Year's BRIT Awards Goody Bag?

James Corden Adele Mumford And Sons Emeli Sande Rita Ora

Adele, Mumford & Sons, Emeli Sande, blah, blah, blah: nobody really cares who walks away with the Brit Awards right? Lets face it, we tune in every year in the hope of some clunky presenting, a stiletto heel break, or a wardrobe malfunction. However, something else that appears to be of interest before every Brit Awards ceremony is the shadowy goody bags that each nominee and performer gets to take home. The Academy Awards put the stoppers on their Oscars gift bags years ago, owing totax concerns, but the British don't care about that. The Brit Awards goody bags and back - but what's in them this year?

Well, according to ceremony organizers, the biggest names in pop music will be taking home a Lucky Voice Karaoke Kit, in order to practise at home, we assume. For the girls, there's also a Jack French London Primrose Bag, while for the boys, it's a Twenty8 signature bag from The London Collection. Elsewhere, there's a Paperblanks journal ensuring telephone numbers can by duly scribbled down at the after-party, and there's also some Highland Angel cufflinks and Ti Senti Milani jewellery. Fancy.

Hey, there's also a scarf (for the cold weather) and some bamboo sunglasses (for the hot weather), as well as JBL headphones and a JBL 'flip' portable wireless stereo system. Should - heaven forbid - any of the celebrities forget to shower themselves in perfume and aftershave, the goody bag contains a Hugo Boss fragrance for the guys, and a Boss Nuit perfume for the ladies.

Alt-J Taken By Surprise By BRIT Nominations

Alt-J Jessie Ware Jake Bugg One Direction Emeli Sande Plan B Mumford And Sons Robbie Williams

Mercury Music Prize winners Alt-J have been given their first BRIT Award nods, after being nominated for three awards: Best British Group, Best British Album and British Breakthrough.. Still, despite earlier success the band have admitted that they were still taken by surprise with the announcement of their recognition.

Speaking to NME, keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton described the news as "incredible," but admitted that he and the rest of the band were taken by surprise by the announcement, saying: "thought this this wouldn't be for the likes of us."

Last year the group's debut album, An Awesome Wave, received wide-spread acclaim and was awarded the title of BBC Radio 6's Album of 2012 as well as the Mercury Award and with the BRITs constantly vying to remain relevant and 'cool' it looks like the group might also be in contention to take away at least one gong at February's awards show, regardless of what the modest group members may think of their chances.

Bookies Put Emeli Sande Favorite For BRITS Success

Emeli Sande

Emeli Sandé is the bookies favourite to triumph twice at the BRIT Awards after the nominations were announced this morning.

Given that last year it felt like that Sandé had somehow taken control of all our televisions, mobile phones and laptops, appearing seemingly every minute on every channel through every device everywhere, it’s not too surprising that she features prominently in the BRIT Awards list of nominees announced today. Sandé is up for the Best British Female category and the Best British Album one too, with Digital Spy reporting that the bookies have her odds on to win both; in fact dominantly so. Sandé is tipped at 2/7 to win the latter and an overwhelming 1/10 to win the former, comfortably ahead of Amy Winehouse – who has been nominated from beyond the grave and stands at 10/1, still remarkably good odds for someone who spent all of last year dead.

In the British album category, Sandé’s Our Version Of Events – the biggest selling in the UK last year – goes up against Mumford & Sons’ Babel, Plan B’s Ill Manors, Alt-J’s Mercury Award-winning An Awesome Wave and Paloma Faith’s Fall To Grace. Elsewhere, it’s expected that Rita Ora will take home British Breakthrough prize, whilst it’s going to be tough to split Robbie Williams, Olly Murs and James Arthur for Best British Single.

BRIT Awards 2013 Nominees Announced: Diverse? Or Just Weird?

Amy Winehouse Emeli Sande Bat For Lashes Paloma Faith Jessie Ware The XX Alt-J Mumford And Sons Muse One Direction Tom Odell AlunaGeorge Michael Buble Laura Mvula Rihanna Cat Power Alicia Keys Lana Del Rey Adele Brit Awards

This year’s Brit Awards nominations look as though they were concocted by a group of strangers, with wildly different cultural backgrounds, on a drunken night out. Is this a sign that the mainstream music world is finally starting to accept that it’s becoming more and more acceptable to have diverse musical tastes? Or are the organisers of the BRITS simply trying to spark controversy? have they lost the plot? Or is this an honest reflection of the mindset of a 2013 British music buying public? Let’s take a look at the evidence, and scrutinise some of the more baffling categories…

British Female Solo Artist Nominees – One of the more sensitive and contentious issues, here, in the British female solo artist category. Of the five nominees, only four of them were alive this year. We understand that Amy Winehouse has a lasting legacy in British pop music. We understand that she was – and, in many ways remains - a tour de force. But, for the sake of the awards, we simply have to ask, at the risk of sounding flippant, what has Amy Winehouse done for British music in the last 12 months? Sadly, nothing. Her posthumous album (released in December 2011, we should add), Lioness: Hidden Treasures was politely and quietly denounced for being little more than cuttings from the studio floor. We simply can’t get our heads around her inclusion on this list. With Bat For Lashes throw in as the ‘alternative’ wild card, to lend a touch of outsider cool to the category, it’s between Emeli Sande, Paloma Faith and Jessie Ware to catch this one, we reckon.

Emeli Sande's Gig Proceeds Going To The Prince's Trust

Emeli Sande

Emeli Sandé's success has grown exponentially over the past twelve months, from being a relatively unknown singer-songwriter, working in the relative dark background of other stars, to being an internationally adored artist.

Before finding fame she had written songs for Susan Boyle, Cheryl Cole, Tinie Tempah and Leona Lewis. 2012, however, has been her year and she's already had two UK No #1 singles, her album hit the top-spot, she performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics, she got married and now she's begun rounding the year off with a sold-out gig at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Sandé knows how far she's come and told the crowd, "I'm so happy to be here and you sold out this venue this is my wildest dream come true," reported the Huffington Post.

She dedicated much of the show to friends and family, but also to The Prince's Trust, to which "My Kind of Love" was devoted. She also said that the proceeds of the gig would be going to this charity, which is fitting in a year that has also been important for the monarchy. Her performances were mature, as are her lyrics, and commenting on her song 'Clown' she said, "The lyrics of this song are so important to me... No matter how kind you are to people someone is always looking for a clown and sometimes you can be that clown."

Rihanna And Chris Brown's Nobodies Business Leaks Online (Lyrics)

Rihanna Chris Brown Emeli Sande Eminem David Guetta

Rihanna and Chris Browns' Nobodies Business, which appears on Rhi-Rhi's new studio album Unapologetic, has leaked online. News of the controversial collaboration was first announced after Rihanna uploaded an image of the track-listing for the album earlier this week.

The website HipHop-n-More.com is streaming snippets of the new record while 'Nobodies Business' has also turned up on YouTube. The up-tempo track sees the former couple sharing vocal duties. "Your love is perfection. Just point me in the right direction. I'm a give you all my affection. Whatever we touch becomes infectious," sings Rihanna. The lyrics will certainly leave some of the Bajan star's fans uneasy and on the chorus she sings, "I'm a be your girl. I wanna make you mine and it ain't nobodies business," which kind of speaks for itself. Brown - who was convicted of brutally assaulting Rihanna - sings, "Me and you, ain't nobody's business, no it ain't nobody's business",

The track follows on from their collaborative remixes Birthday Cake and Turn Up The Music, which were unveiled earlier this year. Rihanna's new album Unapologetic - also featuring collaborations with David Guetta, Eminem and Emeli Sande - is released on November 19, 2012.

Harper's Bazaar's Women Of The Year 2012 All Dazzled In More Ways Than One

Emily Blunt Jessica Ennis Victoria Pendleton Ellie Simmonds Vivienne Westwood Cindy Sherman Ruth Wilson Emeli Sande

All of the guests and winners at last night's Harpers Bazaar Women of the Year Awards looked utterly stunning on the red carpet. Many have noted Emily Blunt's show-stopping backless orange number, and how beautiful Daisy Lowe looked in her timelessly-classic sequined gown, but the wardrobes of the guests were not the reason anyone showed up, nor why the awards are so important to the influential women of the world.

"Now we [women] are expected to do everything, which probably isn't human," the Telegraph quotes Stella McCartney saying "and we are in danger of burning out if we try to do everything." A full interview with McCartney, as well as with other winners of the awards, will be published in the December issue of Harper's Bazaar, which will be dedicated to the women. French actress Marion Cotillard will appear on the front cover, with whom the magazine also has a full interview inside.

In a year flush with the monarchy, Queen Elizabeth has also won the accolade of Icon of the Year. The queen has as yet not commented upon this win, but we've no doubt she'll be celebrating in her own way. Ambassadors of the year were awarded to three of this year's Olympic winners, Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Ellie Simmons, who have jointly provided brand new, healthy role models for young women today. A special award was given In Memoriam to Marie Colvin who was an American reporter, killed earlier this year while covering the siege of Homs in Syria, where a nail bomb exploded, killing her.

Emeli Sande, Our Version Of Events Album Review

It could be claimed that compared to other acts Emeli Sande has burst on to the scene and became the artist of the moment. But in actual fact it has been a long time coming for the Scottish singer. After collaborating with Professor Green, Chipmunk and Tinnie Tempah as well as writing songs for female singers such as Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle and erm. Cher Lloyd, the wait is now finally over for Emeli Sande.
