Hollywood newcomer Emmy Rossum was so determined to capture the spiritual side of her Phantom Of The Opera character CHRISTINE, she put herself through a harrowing seance.

The New York actress, who stars opposite Gerard Butler in the upcoming movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's hit musical, feared she didn't have enough depth for the tortured character.

She was so concerned, she did something she once vowed she'd never do - a spooky seance.

Rossum, a former METROPOLITAN OPERA regular who made her name in films like Mystic River and The Day After Tomorrow, says, "It was very frightening and upsetting, but it's what I needed.

"I had to put myself through everything Christine went through. It was kind of like going down a rabbit hole - you don't see the light for a while."
