Father John Misty has released the title track of his third album, "Pure Comedy". This new track and video aligns itself most closely to the song "Bored in the USA" from 2015's "I Love You, Honeybear". The video for "Pure Comedy" is a wonderful concoction of home videos, crass illustration of mankind throughout the ages and stock footage of the planet, blood streams, natural disasters, religious iconography and footage of the recent US Election. It's dense and almost frustratingly dizzying in its scope, but manages plays out in a hilariously cynical fashion which is accompanied by epically orchestral piano and bellowing horns.
Father John Misty misanthropically scorns the folly of humanity from the birth of a child to a hunter-gatherer scenario which depicts the entrenched nature of modern day sexism. And then furthers itself by mocking humanity in the contemporary narcissistic world we now inhabit - ranging from monstrous political figures, oppressive religious dogma and our arrogance in our own beliefs representing 'true' freedom. Then finally residing itself (somewhat reluctantly) that "each other's all we've got." This, alongside the first single released "Real Love Baby" seem to indicate an artist on the top of his game - as talented as he is hilarious.
"Pure Comedy", the album, is scheduled to be released on April 7st 2017 through Subpop Records.
You can also watch "Pure Comedy: The Film" which is a 25 minute documentary about the making of the album.
