Disney and Lucasfilm have announced details of the upcoming Star Wars films at its annual shareholders meeting in California. Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII which will hit theaters on May 26, 2017, while Gareth Edwards' standalone movie starring Felicity Jones will be titled Rogue One, according to Variety.

The latter movie will begin shooting in London this summer and opens on December 16, 2016. The film is based on an idea by Oscar-winning vfx supervisor John Knoll and was written by Cinderella scribe Chris Weitz. Plot details are yet to be revealed though it is speculated Jones could play Princess Leia. Kathleen Kennedy will produce the movie film alongside Knoll, Tony To and John Schwartz.

It's also unclear whether both spinoff movies will tie into J.J Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. 

Elsewhere, Chronicle director Josh Trank is developing another top secret feature, rumored to focus on the early life of Han Solo.

That movie opens on December 18 and features original cast-members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, as well as various newcomers including Oscar Isaac, John Boyega and Adam Driver. The film takes place 30 years after 1983's Return of the Jedi.

Disney is betting big on its new slate of Star Wars movies and acquired Lucasfilm for $4 million in 2012. The studio is also planning various Star Wars themed attractions across Disney parks.
