Sergeant Gerry Boyle is a cop, working in a small town in County Galway, in the western part of Ireland, with a love of prostitutes, dropping acid on his days off and a dying mother. Whilst on the job, he doesn't follow the rulebook and he thinks that everyone he's met is an idiot.
When his town becomes involved in a high-profile drugs trafficking case, Boyle is paired with humourless FBI agent Wendell Everett, despite the former having no interest in the case at all. Boyle seems bewildered when he finds out the drug traffickers are white; he assumes, thanks to the countless movies he's watched, that drug dealers are either black or Mexican. He also has preconceptions about the FBI, formed from the crime shows he watches in his spare time.
Although Boyle has no desire to work with Everett, certain situations arise which lead him back to the case. First his new colleague disappears, then a prostitute attempts to blackmail him. When the drug traffickers try and buy him off, Boyle realises the only person he can really trust is Everett and that he needs to take matters into his own hands.
