Bookmakers will be hoping for a surprise result at the Mercury Music Prize on Wednesday night (October 29, 2014) as punters continue to back favourites FKA Twigs and Kate Tempest. The latest odds have the former as the narrow frontrunner at 5/2, with Brockley-born singer-songwriter Tempest available at 3/1 for her album Everybody Down.

FKA Twigs' record LP1 is one of the year's most critically acclaimed records, though Tempest's foray into hip-hop has seen her selected by the Poetry Book Society as one of the 20 next generation poets. She also won the Ted Hughes award for her work Brand New Ancients.

James Blake was the surprise winner of last year's award and bookmakers will be keeping their fingers crossed for East India Youth, Damon Albarn or Anna Calvi's name being in the envelope. Brighton duo Royal Blood are also available at 5/1 while hip-hop trio Young Fathers are up at 12/1.

This year's token jazz nominee, GoGo Penguin, are trailing the odds list at 33/1 for their acclaimed album v2.0.

 "This looks like the most open Mercury race ever and all 12 albums have a shot at winning," said Matthew Shaddick of Ladbrokes. "Bookies will be hoping for another surprise result following James Blake's win last year."

The winner of the £20,000 prize has gone to Alt-J, The XX and PJ Harvey in recent years. After performances from each of the nominees, the winner will be announced at the ceremony at the Roundhouse in London.
