Isle Of Wight Festival - 2015 Live Review

It's perhaps fitting that my prevailing memory of this year's Isle of Wight Festival will be guitars. This was after all the 45th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix's legendary performance on the Island, something that was being widely celebrated by festival organiser John Giddings and his team across the site. Fender, for example, brought some specially designed guitars to the party for artists including You Me At 6 to play, and there was also a world record attempt for the most number of people in one place to be wearing a mask, the face in question was naturally Hendrix himself. Despite that backdrop, it was some of the guitarists who played across the weekend that demonstrated the power of the instrument and reinforced that guitar based rock isn't on its last legs as some have speculated over the past few years.

Isle Of Wight Festival 2015 Live Review

The festival got into full swing with a Stones-esque swagger on Friday afternoon when The Struts took to the Main Stage. Their enthusiasm signalled a continuation of their set from the previous year's festival, indeed they are an ideal opening act when you want to energise a crowd. Their appearance at Download the following day, will no doubt have had a similar effect. There seemed to be a Rolling Stones theme to many of the acts getting the festival underway. Over in the Big Top The Ruen Brothers covered 'Miss You' during their rousing set that was well received.

The first moment that sent a shiver down my spine this year was the Counting Crows though. The guitar line to 'Round Here' sent a wave of excitement across the main arena. It was a strong opening statement in a nine song set that featured the likes of 'Mr Jones', 'Miami', and 'Rain King' into which singer Adam Duritz dropped some Elbow lyrics as a nod of the hat to Guy Garvey. If Counting Crows' guitars weren't haunting enough, it was actually The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach whose riffs were the most powerful and elemental of the day. The dirty Blues grit of Auerbach's playing was like a roll of thunder that saw the heavens open to drench the crowd in torrential rain. While much of the set was dedicated to material culled from 'El Camino' and 'Brothers', rather than recent record 'Turn Blue', the band's graduation to a headlining slot was well deserved and warranted. The final song of the set 'Little Black Submarines', which builds from a delicate solo performance to a dramatic climax, utilised every trick in the book for The Black Keys' expanded touring band. If Patrick Carney's drums and Auerbach's guitars are the perfect union on record, it seems their live shows rightly now have the power to command top billing with the inclusion of bassist Richard Swift and keyboardist John Clement Wood.

Isle Of Wight Festival Sees World Record Attempt In Honour Of Jimi Hendrix

Isle of Wight Festival Jimi Hendrix Black Keys Prodigy Blur Fleetwood Mac

On the 45th anniversary of his legendary set at the venue, the organisers of the Isle of Wight Festival 2015 have honoured Jimi Hendrix by attempting to break a world record.

Amid the fun of four massive headliners over three nights – The Black Keys and The Prodigy sharing the slot on Friday, Blur on Saturday and Fleetwood Mac on Sunday – the IoW chiefs had been encouraging the 50,000 festival-goers to buy cut-out Jimi Hendrix masks in order raise money for its nominated charity WellChild.

Fleetwood Mac And Blur Sing-A-Longs Are Expected For Isle Of Wight Festival 2015

Summer festival season kicks into high gear this weekend with the first big event of the calendar taking place on the south coast. Tens of thousands of people will be heading to Seaclose Park on the Isle of Wight for a bill, which is top heavy on heritage acts that bring with them a sense of nostalgia. While recent years have welcomed the likes of Jay-Z, Calvin Harris and Kings Of Leon to headline, this time round it seems big names with an even bigger back catalogue are being used as the main attraction.

Isle Of Wight festival 2015 logo

However, many of the headline acts seem to be experiencing a renaissance of sorts. For example, Blur, whose new album 'The Magic Whip', their first since 2003, has won critical acclaim. The former Britpop poster boys will take to the Main Stage on Saturday night in the knowledge that this is one of the first times that UK crowds will get to see this new material given the live treatment. You can expect a set heavy on those new songs, but peppered with all the classic singles, certainly a formula for a memorable festival appearance. It's a similar story for The Prodigy who'll headline the Main Stage on Friday after The Black Keys. Both acts have played the festival in recent years and here they're repeating the joint top billing that was given to Biffy Clyro and Calvin Harris last year. As with Blur, The Prodigy's new album, 'The Day Is My Enemy', has revived interest in the band following an extended period out of the spotlight. Elsewhere, Fleetwood Mac will bring proceedings to a close on Sunday, bolstered by the return of Christine McVie to the band, a set covering Rumours era gems like 'Don't Stop' and 'Songbird' is a strong possibility.

Glastonbury Festival: Just Give Us The Wellies And "We're There" - Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac Glastonbury Festival

Fleetwood Mac is not making their long-awaited Glastonbury debut this year – the full line up has been announced, the posters have been made. Forget about it. But that doesn’t mean the legendary band won’t in the future, after Christine McVie confirmed the group’s desire to play the world-famous festival to The Daily Star.

Having just picked up her Lifetime Achievement Award at The Ivors, McVie – who re-joined the band full time not long ago, said: "If Michael Eavis provides the wellies I'll be there." It was a double scoop, too, as the singer confirmed that the band is recording another album. "We are making new music right now," she added. "It's half done, then the world tour starts in September."

Christine McVie Is Open To Rejoining Fleetwood Mac Permanently

Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac's reclusive former member Christine McVie has apparently voiced her interest in once again becoming a full-time member of the acclaimed, reformed group. After leaving the band for good in 1998, McVie came out of retirement in September this year to perform 'Don't Stop' with the rest of the band at London's O2 Arena and since then, it seems as though she's acquired the hunger for performing once again.

The band (Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham pictured) have been back on the road without McVie

Speaking with The Guardian last week, the one-time key member of the group revealed her reason for leaving the band, but said that despite her feelings in 1998, she feels ready to face the world again and team up with the band as they continue to tour. The band are currently on hiatus from touring while Christine's ex-husband John McVie undergoes cancer treatment, however when they do return to the road, McVie's comments have suggested that she might be on the road with them.

Stevie Nicks Has A Lot Of Time For Beyonce Because She's "Not Skanky"

Stevie Nicks Fleetwood Mac Beyonce Knowles Cory Monteith

Beyoncé Knowles Carter is never going to be an artist lacking in fans, and even the artists who may have influenced the 'Grown Woman' singer are full of praise for her, namely, Stevie Nicks. The Fleetwood Mac singer was speaking with The Telegraph recently about the latest Fleetwood reunion, when she gave Bey a glowing review for her level head and the way she handles fame and presents herself to her many adoring fans.

Stevie Nicks
Nicks is a fan of Beyoncé as a person and musician

"Beyoncé's great. She's got her alter ego [Sasha Fierce], but Beyoncé the girl, the woman, is very sweet and nice and polite," Nicks told the paper. She went on to add that the singer has remained herself since she burst on to the music scene in 1998 with Destiny's Child, and that after she met the star in 2001 on the set of the Destiny's Child music video for 'Bootylicious,' Stevie was overwhelmed by how down to Earth the singer was. She continued, "She's a good role model. She's not skanky. I'm glad we have her."

Glastonbury 2014 Headliners Are First-Timers, Fleetwood Mac, Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode?

Glastonbury Festival Michael Eavis Fleetwood Mac

Glastonbury Festival boss Michael Eavis has revealed that he has more or less signed the headliners for 2014, teasing that neither act has played the historical music gathering in the past.

In an interview with NME, Eavis explained, "Next year's headliners are more or less in place. They're three bands who haven't played Glastonbury, and that's important." Though the article sent the internet into frenzy with speculation over Eavis's dream headliners Prince and Madonna, the emphasis on the word 'band' appears to suggest the acts will be more conventional four or five-pieces, perhaps in the rock genre.

Of course, both acts travel with accomplished bands - Prince particularly - though Eavis's comments leaves those possibilities in doubt - for this writer at least.

Nine Inch Nails' & David Lynch Get Creepy With 'Came Back Haunted' [Video]

Industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails have teamed up with prolific filmmaker David Lynch for their new music video for 'Came Back Haunted.' After going on hiatus in 2009, the band's return was announced by lead singer Trent Reznor in February 2013, along with a worldwide festival and arena tour.

Nine inch nails
Nine Inch Nails Mark Their Return With 'Came Back Haunted.'

In typical NIN fashion, the video is about as disturbing as it can be (see also: the universally banned Broken EP videos), showing shaky images of singer/guitarist/wizard of weird Trent Reznor spliced over an image of what looks like a flobberworm. Add in a red/white flashing screen, a particularly evil eye and strange gas mask-wearing spidergirl images, and you have a pretty good accompaniment for the dark subject matter of NIN's songs. "They put something inside of me/The smile is red and its eyes are black/I don't think I'll be coming back," sings Reznor atop trademark fuzzy guitars and synthesised 'oohs.' The song is catchy and the video is strangely hypnotising - a simple idea that gets under your skin, making you look around to see if anyone's lurking behind you.

Fleetwood Mac Drop Surprise New EP On ITunes

Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac are the latest in what’s becoming quite a long procession of acts rocking up unannounced and dropping material on us causing a mass outbreak of giddyitis. That’s right the seminal British group may have already announced their live return, but they didn’t say anything about when they were going to be putting new material out. It turns out that they had an idea of when all along – namely yesterday (April 30, 2013).

The group have released an EP of new material onto iTunes without warning, their first new studio recordings since 2003’s Say You Will LP. We knew it was going to come because guitarist Lindsay Buckingham had said last month at a show "One of the things we thought would be a good idea before we hit the road would be to go into the studio and cut some new material. So last year we did that. It's the best stuff we've done in a long time and in a few days we're going to drop an EP of new stuff."

However, the surprise is that it’s dropped now. The EP contains the songs Sad Angel, It Takes Time and Miss Fantasy – all of which were written by Buckingham. It also includes the track Without You, originally written by Stevie Nicks as part of Nicks and Buckingham’s former collaborative project. The group come to the UK in November.

New Chapters To Be Written: Fleetwood Mac Release 'Extended Play' - First New Music In 10 Years

Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac are currently in the early stages of a huge tour and to prepare fans for their arrival on the world stage once more, the band have released an EP of new material, to whet their appetites. Entitled simply Extended Play, the record is available exclusively on iTunes and features three new songs written by Lindsey Buckingham (Sad Angel, It Takes Time and Miss Fantasy) as well as a revisioned track, Without You, which was originally written as part of the Buckingham Nicks project.

Speaking to Rolling Stone prior to the EP’s release, Buckingham explained that – despite many years of writing music together, he still finds that his song-writing partnership with Stevie Nicks shows new developments. “It's still evolving, and that's the beauty of it too. I've known Stevie since high school. We were a couple for many, many years, and we've been a musical couple forever," he explained. "After all this time you would think there was nothing left to discover, nothing left to work out, no new chapters to be written. But that is not the case – there are new chapters to be written.”

Extended Play marks the first release of new material from the band since 2003’s Say You Will LP.

Stevie Nicks Extinguishes Reese Witherspoon's Chances Of Playing Her

Reese Witherspoon Fleetwood Mac Lindsay Lohan

Stevie Nicks appears to have shot down any chance Reese Witherspoon had of playing her in a movie biopic, branding the Oscar winner "too old" to play her. Witherspoon has mentioned as a possible casting choice for a planned movie about Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, but the legendary singer says her days after numbered. "I've already told her she's almost too old," the singer told ET Canada at the Toronto premiere of her new documentary In Your Dreams.

It appears Witherspoon might be of the same opinion, "I love her, but she's like, 'I could play your mother," Nicks recalls. Though the Hollywood actress is just 37, a movie about the Fleetwood Mac singer is likely to focus on her younger years and rise to stardom, which probably would make it a little difficult for Witherspoon to tale the role. Anyway, she's got other things on her plate.

She was snapped on the set of her new movie 'The Good Lie' in Atlanta this week, wearing cowboy boots, a jean skirt and a teal top. The movie is based on the real life story of a young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the U.S with three other boys. He develops an unlikely friendship  with a brash American woman assigned to help him, though struggles to adjust to the modern world and feels guilty about the brother he left behind in war-torn Sudan.
