Get ready for some great news, quirky comedy fans – ‘Flight Of The Conchords’ is coming to the big screen! The cult comedy is being adapted for a movie version, according to co-creator Jemaine Clement.

In an interview with entertainment website IndieWire last Saturday (August 14th), Clement revealed that he and his on-screen collaborator Bret McKenzie were working on a movie script, although there was no clear deadline for the project at this moment in time – or indeed whether it will even see the light of day.

“We have actually started writing one,” he said. “But who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, ‘The film is going to be like this,’ it could be this, this, this, this, this.”

The HBO series, set up as a ‘mockumentary’ following two struggling New Zealanders in New York trying to launch their folk band, still enjoys a significant cult following despite only running for two seasons, in 2007 and 2009. It spawned a clutch of comedy albums and was nominated for a number of Emmys, with their 2008 album The Distant Future winning a Grammy off the back of the show.

Plans for a summer tour of North America this year were cancelled because of Clement’s involvement with Steven Spielberg’s movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘The BFG’, but he added in a separate interview with Consequence of Sound that he and McKenzie were hoping to announce a Flight of the Conchords tour by the end of 2015, with a tour in early 2016.

“We’ll announce it before the end of the year, hopefully, and then some time next year get on the road … after we get some new guitar strings and that sort of thing.”
