Foo Fighters (formed 1995)
Foo Fighters are a band that began as a solo project for Dave Grohl, the former drummer for Nirvana. They are now an internationally renowned band and three of their albums have won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album.
The early years: During his time as Nirvana's drummer, Dave Grohl occasionally booked studio time to record his own demos, not wanting to ruin the chemistry of Nirvana by introducing his own songs to the band. Grohl released a cassette entitled Pocketwatch in 1992, under the pseudonym `Late!'
The demo tapes that eventually became the debut Foo Fighters album were recorded in Seattle. Grohl played all the instruments and sang all the vocals on the recordings, apart from one guitar line, which was played by Greg Dulli of the band Afghan Whigs.
Ex-Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic was the initial candidate to play bass in Foo Fighters but both Novoselic and Grohl were concerned that people may think the pair were trying to reincarnate Nirvana. However, Grohl was keen to avoid Foo Fighters being a one-man studio project. He drafted ex-Sunny Day Real Estate bass player Nate Mendel and their drummer, William Goldsmith. To complete the line-up, Grohl invited Nirvana's occasional touring guitarist, Pat Smear to play second guitar. Smear also used to be a member of the punk band The Germs.
The first single, `This Is A Call' was released in 1995, followed by the self-titled album. That same year, they made their first appearance at the Reading Festival.
Mainstream Success: The second album was recorded with producer Gil Norton but Grohl was unhappy with the mixes of the tracks. He headed to a studio in Washington DC and began recording some of the songs again by himself. The newer version of `Walking After You', with Grohl playing all the instruments, was the one used for the album.
When the band re-grouped in LA to re-record the album, with Grohl playing drums, Goldsmith was not informed about the session. Eventually, he found out from Mendel. Feeling betrayed, he left the band. The album, The Colour and The Shape was released in 1997.
Alanis Morrisette's touring drummer, Taylor Hawkins volunteered for the role of drummer in the band and was playing live with the band in time for the release of The Colour and The Shape. In September of 1997, outside the MTV Video Music Awards, Pat Smear also announced that he was leaving the band, and introduced the crowd to his replacement, Franz Stahl. Stahl appeared on two soundtrack recordings (a re-recorded `Walking After You' for The X-Files and `A320' for Godzilla) but left the band before they recorded their third album.
There is Nothing Left To Lose was recorded in Virginia, as a three-piece. The single `Learn To Fly' was the band's first single to hit the Billboard Hot 100. Chris Shiflett successfully auditioned as a touring guitarist and eventually became a permanent member of the band.
When Queen were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, Grohl and Hawkins performed with them, with Dave Grohl taking on the vocals of the late Freddie Mercury. Grohl also took time out to help Queens of the Stone Age record their Songs for the Deaf album, after spending four months recording the Foo Fighters' fourth album.
Having finished the QotSA album, however, Grohl was inspired to get Foo Fighters to re-record their own album. The resulting record was entitled One By One. The single, `Times Like These' was used as part of George W. Bush's presidential campaign, much to the band's distaste.
The fifth Foo Fighters studio album was In Your Honour, a double CD. One disc was acoustic numbers, the other contained rock songs. Grohl stated that it was the perfect way to celebrate the band's 10th anniversary.
The follow up, produced by Gil Norton again, was released in 2007, entitled Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace. Soon after the album's completion, the band played at the huge `Live Earth' event at Wembley Stadium.
They also performed their song `The Pretender' at the Grammy awards, with John Paul Jones conducting the orchestra.

Dave Grohl is becoming quite renowned for unexpected happenings during his live shows with Foo Fighters. Whether he's falling off the stage or playing through the pain of a broken leg, something always seems to be going on with Grohl when he starts to perform.
Dave Grohl invited his daughter Harper on-stage
The shenanigans continued this week (on June 16) as Grohl performed in Iceland before his daughter Harper Grohl was invited to join him up on the stage. An avid musician just like her father, she took to the drums to play whilst her father crooned Queen classic, 'We Will Rock You'.

Sheeran and Foo Fighters are the red-hot favourites to join Radiohead at the top of the bill at Glastonbury Festival 2017, according to new reports.
Having made a tentative return to social media earlier this week after the best part of a year off, Ed Sheeran is reportedly on the verge of landing the biggest gig in music – a headline slot at Glastonbury Festival.
Sources told The Sun on Thursday night (December 15th) that the 25 year English star, who had one of the world’s biggest selling albums of the last couple of years with his sophomore effort X in 2014, is set to be unveiled as the second headliner on the iconic Pyramid Stage in July next year.

Grohl had wanted to work with the late singer on a song for a movie.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has revealed that David Bowie rejected a possible collaboration between the two. In a video shot for Playboy, Grohl and bandmate Pat Smear take a tour around some of Bowie’s favourite L.A. haunts, sharing stories about the Thin White Duke along the way.
Dave Grohl was once rejected by David Bowie.
In the video Grohl and Smear reveal just how big Bowie superfans they really are, with Smear even recalling a time he ‘stalked’ the singer to a recording studio and picked up a cigarette he had tossed away. Grohl then told the story of the time he tried to work with his idol, but got a less than positive response.
But who will headline next year’s festival?
Tickets for next year's Glastonbury Festival have sold out in just 30 minutes. The 118,200 standard tickets went on sale at 9am on Sunday morning (October 4th), at a price of £228 plus £5 booking fee, with eager fans rushing to snap them up in just half an hour.
Coldplay are among the favourites to headline Glastonbury 2016.
A spokesperson for the festival told the BBC, "We have, once again, been staggered by the sheer number of people from around the world who hoped to come to the festival, with demand significantly outstripping supply."

The group were due to mark their two nominations for the 'Sonic Highways' documentary by performing a song, but say Fox kicked them off the bill with very short notice.
Dave Grohl has explained his band’s absence from last night’s Primetime Emmy Awards, claiming that a scheduled performance from the group was cancelled by broadcasters Fox at the last minute.
The band received two nominations for the main Emmy Awards night, which took place on Sunday (September 20th) in Los Angeles, for their HBO documentary series ‘Sonic Highways’, which followed the recording of last year’s studio album of the same name and also doubled up as an exploration of the rich musical histories of a handful of U.S. cities.

Roger Taylor and John Paul Jones played along on a cover of Queen's hit 'Under Pressure'.
They were forced to cancel their two Wembley enormo-gigs as well as their headline Glastonbury performance after Dave Grohl broke his leg earlier this summer, but Foo Fighters made their triumphant return to the UK with the first of three shows at the Milton Keynes Bowl – and they brought along some pretty big names to help them celebrate.
Performing the entire two-and-a-half-hour gig from a huge motorised throne, embossed with the Foo Fighters logo, Grohl announced to the crowd on Saturday night (September 5th): “We came back for you! We waited a long time to be here.”

A protest by the church backfired when they were greeted by the band blasting out Rick Astley.
The Westboro Baptist Church got a surprise when they tried to protest outside a Foo Fighters concert at the Kansas City Sprint Center on Friday, August 21st. The band decided to answer the church’s protests by treating them to a 'Rickroll', using Rick Astley’s 1987 hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.

The Foo Fighters singer is a little nervous ahead of the Emmy Awards ceremony in September, for which his group's documentary 'Sonic Highways' was nominated four times.
He’s been officially the nicest man in rock (trademark) for nearly 20 years, but Dave Grohl has revealed that he suffers from “social anxiety” when out of his comfort zone. The Foo Fighters frontman made the comment when asked how he felt about attending next month’s Emmy Awards.
He told Gold Derby in a video interview: “It’s just going to be such a crazy night, I just can’t imagine. I think I’ll feel like that kid who is the new kid at school, the first day at school. I’ll probably just sit down, with my back up against the wall, just nervous, and waiting to see who is going to want to talk to me.”
