The rockers made their first appearance in Britain since pulling out of their highly-anticipated festival slot and gigs at Wembley Stadium in June (15) after Grohl broke his leg onstage in Sweden.

After support acts Iggy Pop and Royal Blood, the band opened their set at Milton Keynes Bowl with Everlong, as Grohl yelled, "We came back for you! We waited a long f**king time to be here, it's gonna be a long f**king night".

During Monkey Wrench, the frontman told the crowd that he was getting better, and stood up in his throne for the first time, saying, "We've got so many songs. We're gonna keep it going."

As The Pretender came to a close, Grohl apologised for having to abandon their earlier gigs, saying, "We're gonna rock a lot for you tonight. It's been about eleven weeks since the incident (when Grohl broke his leg onstage in Sweden). The last thing I wanted to do was cancel shows. I hate cancelling shows. I said 'I've got to get back there as soon as we f**king can'. I'm sorry for making you wait so long. Tonight we're gonna play some extra long s**t, we're just getting warmed up. Who's gonna lose their voice first? Not me."

The biggest surprise of the night came as Grohl introduced his "superdupergroup", with Queen's Taylor and Led Zeppelin's Jones.

Before the veteran rockers came on stage to perform David Bowie's Under Pressure, the frontman told the crowd, "A couple of our friends turned up and we thought it'd be nice to do a song together.

"You've heard of a supergroup? Well this is a superdupergroup. The Foo Fighters are living out their f**king fantasy in front of you."

Fans also got another shock as the rockers played DOA for the first time since 2012, after Grohl took song requests from the crowd.

Closing the show with Best Of You, Grohl told the audience that he knew the band would come back to the U.K., and was glad the fans still wanted them, declaring, "When this happened to me... I always knew we'd come back, I just hoped you would too."
