Frank Ocean Teases New Music With First Track In AGES - Listen To "Memrise"

Frank Ocean

Remember when Frank Ocean was a thing? Well, it’s been a hot minute since the soulful singer/songwriter released a new track, but today was the day. Ocean has been artistically reclusive for two years or so, working on new material, This weekend, he released Memrise, his first solo effort in a few years.

Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean owns your soul from now until the album drops.

It’s pretty lo-fi stuff, but there’s a lot of production going on. The instrumental is pretty big for a Frank Ocean track and it’s clear he’s been experimenting with a new sound. Intentionally or not, the song has a vinyl kind of sound and a it sounds very ambient – the kind of thing you’d use as background music for a very arty short film. Probably one set in Atlanta.

Red Bull Music Academy Festival Set For Ultimate Closing Party In New York

David Byrne Panda Bear Erykah Badu Questlove Frank Ocean Common

Firstly, we recognise that reporting on a mixture of New York parties, eclectic performances and signature lectures from prominent music movers and shakers could seem, well, immaterial. Let's face it, Gotham is one long eclectic party - but the Red Bull Music Academy Festival is different. The Academy itself, which took place in New York in 2013 and will visit Tokyo this fall, is a travelling series of music performances, club nights, lectures, workshops, art installations and more founded in 1998 - it doesn't look to create "stars" (despite notable participants including Aloe Blacc, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Juan Son), instead it looks to bring together music makers from around the globe. Think of it as a mobile behemoth of culture, skills and sound.

A Class Of Its Own: Red Bull Music Academy Festival's Closing Night

The newly created 'RBMA Festival ' - now taking place annually in New York City - is a legacy to the critically acclaimed Red Bull Music Academy that took place in New York in 2013. It is a month-long blowout that brings together a diverse group of the world's most creative young musicians. Since May 1st, this year's programme has blanketed the boroughs with a selection of richly curated events - and you're invited to the ultimate wrap party. But more on that soon.

Frank Ocean Tells Chipotle To "F- Off" In Lawsuit Over Scarecrow Advert Song

Frank Ocean Fiona Apple

Frank Ocean has sent off a cheque ending a legal spat with burrito giant Chipotle after a dispute over the soundtrack song for the company's Scarecrow advert last year. The R&B singer eschewed discreteness over sharing the cheque with his fans via Tumblr. The cheque was made out to an unknown company for $212,500 but had "F**k Off" scrawled in the 'memo' section.

The pop star also posted a link to the Wikipedia article for 'Defamation' alongside the cheque image. The money, which is assumed to have been made out to Chipotle, was refunding the advance the company paid for Ocean to sing a cover of 'Pure Imagination' for their emotive 2013 commercial.

Everyone Is Stunned By Beyonce's Surprise Album, Most Of All The Critics [Pictures]

Beyonce Knowles Jay Z Frank Ocean Drake

Since she dropped the bomb on Thursday, Beyonce has occupied thousands of terabytes of data transfer with her new album. People are naturally baffled. Yes, we all know Beyonce is pretty much amazing, but even for her, it was an astounding feat. The woman, who opened 2013 by performing at the Inauguration, then went on to do the Super Bowl halftime show to end all halftime shows, went on a 123-show tour, took care of her little girl and still managed to record a 14-track album, film a video for each track and somehow keep the production team behind the entire escapade from breathing a word to anyone.

Can we get a round of applause?

Color us impressed. Since this is Queen Bey, however, people have gotten their heads around the idea by now and music critics are just starting to recover from the shock and express some opinions on the album. Yes, the album is amazing… but is it any good?

Chris Brown Sued, By Frank Ocean's Cousin, Over January Brawl. Got That?

Chris Brown Frank Ocean

Looks like another legal headache for Chris Brown is on it's way, as the singer is being sued by the cousin of R&B star Frank Ocean, who claims that the 'Don't Wake Me Up' singer's bodyguard beat him to a pulp during a confrontation between the two stars earlier this year. The attack in question happened in January this year, in which the two singers and their entourages came to blows over a parking spot at a LA recording studio, during which Brown allegedly threw homophobic slurs at Ocean and threatened to shoot him (although it is still unclear who started the brawl).

Brown has yet another legal battle to worry about

Frank's cousin Sha'Keir Duarte has now revisited the unpleasant incident saying that he was severely injured during the brawl, claiming that Brown's hired protection, a man who goes by the name of 'Hood,' pulverised him during the attack. Duarte goes on to state that Hood repeatedly punched and kicked him, continuing his brutal attack even when he fell to the ground. In all, Durate reckons he suffered at least twelve kicks to the body and several to the head whilst he was on the floor, having sustained a number of blows prior to collapsing to the floor.

Chris Brown's Probation Revoked After Hit 'n' Run In California

Chris Brown Rihanna Karrueche Tran Frank Ocean

Following an alleged hit-and-run accident in California, singer Chris Brown has had his probation revoked - yet he has not been jailed. The incident occurred on the 12th May when Brown shunted the back of a car that had stopped at a red light. The other driver, identified as Olga G, said she called her husband who advised she should exchange contact and insurance details with Brown, although she did not know the other driver to be the famous singer. In her written statement, as reported by BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat, she described Brown as a man who was polite at first but became confrontational when she asked to see his identification. Brown's companion - the only other passenger in his car - is thought to be Karrueche Tran, Chris' current girlfriend.

Olga G resorted to taking a photo of the pair so that they might later be identified but, in an unnerving turn, the couple "went ballistic," with Brown flying off the handle; swearing and grabbing Olga G's camera against screams from Tran. Olga G described the scene: "I jumped back, the girl screamed 'Don't touch her. Don't touch her. I was so shocked that I was speechless. Just a moment ago he was a nice guy. After screaming some insulting nonsense for a while longer, he slammed a door and drove away fast and noisy."

The tracks were debuted last month in Munich, but according to Ocean, this tour has nothing to do with a new album. "All the travel isn’t in support of an album or anything like that really - past or ahead. There’s no label or touring firm dollars involved,” he wrote on his blog. “All pennies from my pocket. In support of some odd daydream. Ops to photograph crowds and clouds from planes. Contrast all the quiet with some noise. New noise and old noise..sober crowd, faded crowd. All welcome."

'The Bling Ring' Soundtrack Might Actually Be Better Than The Film

Sofia Coppola Emma Watson Frank Ocean Kanye West Sleigh Bells

Sofia Coppola’s upcoming film The Bling Ring is one of the summers most exciting prospects in cinema, and with it's release date fast approaching movie execs at Paramount have released the playlist for the movie's official soundtrack. Oh yeah, and did we mention that the soundtrack is ridiculously good?

The line-up features a veritable who's who of contemporary modern music, with 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Sleigh Bells, Phoenix, Frank Ocean, Azealia Bank, M.I.A. and Kanye West, and if that wasn't good enough then there's even some krautrock brought into the mix, including Klaus Schulze and Can. The only problem with this major line-up is now we're not sure what we're looking forward to the most, the movie itself or the soundtrack (who are we kidding, its obviously THAT scene with Emma Watson in the nightclub that everyone is looking forward to the most).

Watch the Bling Ring Trailer!

On top of the glittering line-up on the soundtrack, Coppola has also hooked up with Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never) to score the film; so expect an exciting electronic undercurrent to accompany the a-list soundtrack (which also features a track from Lopatin). In case you're wondering how all these great act will fit into a movie about a group of young criminal stealing from the rich and famous of Los Angeles the you need only to check out the song names, all of which are very fitting for the theme of the movie.

Frank Ocean Named Webby Awards 'Person Of The Year'

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean! King of the Nerds! That’s right, the people behind the Webbys – those who decide which people have impressed the internet the most over the past year – have decided that the Odd Future member and breakout solo artist has suitably wowed them and their thick-rimmed frames so as to award him The Webby Person Of The Year.

Billboard report that the R&B singer has been recognized by the Webbys "for proving the power of the Web as a medium for cultural change when he announced his bisexuality to his Tumblr community." Nice work there Frank. Elsewhere Jerry Seinfeld has been awarded in the category of outstanding comedic performance, thanks to his 10-episode Web series Comedian in Cars Getting Coffee which showed the Seinfeld star hanging out with comedian friends.

There’s some other big winners too, HBO Go (four awards, including best media streaming service), Lady Gaga (for best celebrity-fan social presence), Conan O'Brien (for best celebrity-fan website) and The New York Times (best news social presence). Just in case you were worried that all of these awards were being given out to celebrities merely to boost the events profile, there are some true tech geeks being honored too – namely Steve Wilhite, creator of the GIF file. A lord among men if ever there was. President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign will also get a special achievement award for its use of technology.

Frank Ocean was among the winners at the 17th Annual Webby Awards, highlighting achievements on the internet. This year's awards were selected by judges in the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, including Huffington Post boss Arianna Huffington and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.

Ocean won for his bold 'Thank You's' letter on his Tumblr, which announced his past relationship with a man. He wrote, "4 summer ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping." Ocean was roundly applauded for his decision to come out, and has since gone onto enjoy huge success with his album Channel Orange.

Elsewhere, Jerry Seinfeld won for his web-series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, which featured guests including Ricky Gervais and Larry David. Actor Kevin Spacey received an award for his role in setting up Netflix's $100 million series House of Cards.
