Diego Luna admits he has trouble convincing people he is half Scottish after growing up in Mexico.
Diego Luna has trouble convincing people he is part Scottish.
The actor and director's grandfather came from the northern European country, although he was born and grew up in Mexico, meaning he found it hard to convince the Edinburgh Film Festival of his roots.
He explained: ''The only Scottish thing about me is my blood, and my love for whisky. I was at the Edinburgh Film Festival and I tried to convince the audience I was Scottish, but they never believed me.
''The next year I went back and I brought a piece of newspaper saying my grandfather was who he was! That was the year I fell in love with whisky, but obviously, I've been closer to tequila than whisky my whole life because I was raised in Mexico.''
Diego's latest film, 'Drifting' - a collaboration with Chivas Regal Whisky - sees him join forces with long-time friend, Gael Garcia Bernal, as well as Pablo Cruz, and Julián Levin.
The collaboration sees modern male friendship brought to life through two short films, the first directed by Diego, the second by Gael.
Diego said: ''This project really interested me because the story involves this idea of an intervention, a moment of crossing a line to make your friend wake up. I think friends are the only ones that constantly cross that line and because you're friends you let them and that's the beauty of it because sometimes they know what is best.''
The movie follows Nico (Pablo Cruz) and Andres' (Ari Brickmann) attempt to lure their friend Al (Alexander DiPersia) away from his life as a carefree hotel owner, to attend Nico's wedding. Their surprise visit and prank to get their friend however, backfires as they find themselves stranded at sea with nothing but a life raft.
The second film directed by Gael, to be released in February, will reveal whether the three make it back in time for the wedding. Catch Diego's half of the film now at www.youtube.com/chivasregalglobal
