Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst Missed Out On 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Lead Role

Conor Oberst Oscar Isaac Joel Coen Ethan Coen Carey Mulligan Garrett Hedlund Justin Timberlake John Goodman

Now this is an interesting tidbit of movie trivia: Conor Oberst has revealed that he auditioned for the lead role in folk music comedy-drama, Inside Llewyn Davis. Although the Coen Brothers eventually cast Oscar Isaac as the titular folk singer, Bright Eyes' singer Conor Oberst was reportedly considered for the role.

"I know I told you this when we met, but I tried out for your role in Inside Llewyn Davis," Oberst told Isaac for Interview magazine. "Thank god for everyone that I didn't get it." Perhaps one of the main reasons Oberst failed to convince the Coen Brothers that he was best suited for the role was because of his non-existent acting C.V. which could have proved risky to take on in such a challenging lead role.

Inside Llewyn Davis Review

Excellent

The Coen brothers have a wry twinkle in their eyes as they take us on a lyrical journey with a hugely likeable musician for whom success is only barely out of reach. It's also an engaging exploration of both the the early 1960s New York folk music scene that gave us Bob Dylan and the tenacity it takes to make your dreams come true.

It's 1961, and Llewyn Davis (Isaac) isn't sure he wants to fight anymore. His career has stalled, and he's moving from couch to couch trying to pick up gigs. But he doesn't have anything to lose, and when he inadvertently acquires a pet cat he has a bit of purpose for a change. On the other hand, his longtime friendship with husband-and-wife folk duo Jim and Jean (Timberlake and Mulligan) is strained when Jean tells him she's pregnant with a child that might be his. In need of cash, he takes a job in Chicago, taking a long road-trip with two nutcases (Hedlund and Goodman). And he even considers re-enlisting in the Merchant Marines.

Despite Llewyn's quiet desperation, the Coens keep the film's tone light and endearing, with constant comical touches that keep us smiling right to the cleverly elliptical ending. They also pack the movie with folk music that's gorgeously produced by T Bone Burnett, offering emotive counterpoints to Llewyn's sardonic sense of humour. His snappy wit often gets him into trouble, but we can immediately see his depth of character as well, and Isaac is terrific in the role, the kind of guy we would happily spend a lot more time with.

Dakota Johnson Set For '50 Shades' Lead: Would She Make A Good Ana Steele?

It's less than a year until the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is due in cinemas yet there doesn't seem to have been any firm casting decisions made. The movie, which will be an adaptation from EL James' best-selling erotic fiction of the same name, will have British director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) at its helm but nothing more appears to have been set in concrete.

Dakota Johnson
Will Dakota Johnson Really Take The Lead 50 Shades Character?

The role of Christian Grey - the billionaire with a BDSM fetish - has been the most media-covered role so far, with Ian Somerhalder wanting the role, Garrett Hedlund rejecting the role and Taylor-Johnson's own husband, Aaron, rumored for the part. However, it has emerged that we may know who plays student-turned-sex-slave Anastasia Steele first, namely Dakota Johnson.

Which '50 Shades' Role Did Cara Delevingne Audition For?

Cara Delevingne Sam Taylor-Wood Garrett Hedlund Ian Somerhalder Mila Kunis Emma Watson

Will the Fifty Shades of Grey movie ever be cast? It's been months now and the only solid news we've had is that British filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson will be directing. The roles, which will undoubtedly include plenty of nudity, sex and BDSM, have been batted around from one actor to the next with seemingly no one ready to assign their names to Christian Grey or Ana Steele.

Time Is Running Out To Cast The Adaptation Of EL James' Hugely Successful Books.

Emma Watson and Mila Kunis have publically stated they don't want to be associated with the saucy fiction and so have Armie Hammer, Garrett Hedlund and Taylor-Johnson's husband himself, who have each said they don't see themselves as the whip-brandishing type...well at least not on screen. Ian Somerhalder was reportedly up for the role but was rejected by the series' author herself who said he just wasn't right. Will a cast ever be formed?

Garrett Hedlund Offered '50 Shades' Role By EL James, But Rejects It

Actor Garrett Hedlund has rejected the lead role in the adaptation of EL James' raunchy erotic novel, Fifty Shades of Grey due to being unable to commit to a trilogy. The movie, which has yet to cast a single role, is due for release in 2014 with the Nowhere Boy director, Sam Taylor Johnson, at the helm and the author herself as producer.

"Do I Really Want To Be Filmed Slapping Someone With A Paddle? Nah."

The Tron: Legacy actor had been reportedly hand-picked by the author herself to play the 27 year-old billionaire with a fetish for domination. However, the actor and boyfriend of Kirsten Dunst passed up on the opportunity to become the face of the biggest franchise since the series. A source speaking to US Magazine explained that "Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn't let him do just one film."

Coen's 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Targets Cannes' Prestigious Palme D'Or [Trailer]

Ethan Coen Joel Coen Oscar Isaac Carey Mulligan Justin Timberlake Garrett Hedlund John Goodman

The Coen brothers eighth placement in the competition for the prestigious Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival could be their strongest chance since Barton Fink, which won the award in 1991. It's been six years since the filmmakers have been in competition at Cannes though it seems Inside Llewyn Davis could see the brothers back with a bang.

Inside Llewyn DavisLlewyn (Oscar Isaac) At Jim and Jean's Apartment

The movie, loosely based on Dave Von Ronk's posthumously published memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street, follows Oscar Issac as a singer-songwriter who navigates the testing New York folk music scene of the 1960s. The film, boasting an all-star casting including Isaac, Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby), Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), Garrett Hudlund (On The Road), Adam Driver (Girls) and John Goodman (Argo), Inside Llewyn Davis appears to have all the attributes of a possible Palme D'Or winner and the Coens appear to have spent time making it the best movie possible. It is believed the brothers could have rushed the film into last year's Oscar season though decided against it. Timberlake has contributed to the movie's soundtrack, as has Mulligan's husband Marcus Mumford and T Bone Burnett, who helped shift 8 million copies of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? score.

Inside Llewyn Davis Trailer

Llewyn Davis is a struggling folk musician attempting to find his place in the world by scouring New York's Greenwich Village at the height of folk in 1961. Along the way he meets old friends who are not particularly happy to see him because of his own unresolved mistakes in the past, and while he strives to find a venue to do what he loves doing, hitchhiking across roads in the freezing winter with a beat-up guitar and a homeless cat, he is forced to question not only himself as a person, but also where and what he really wants his future to be.

'Inside Llewyn Davis' is an emotional musical drama written and directed by Oscar winners Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, aka The Coen Brothers ('No Country for Old Men', 'True Grit', 'Fargo'). It has been very loosely based on the posthumous 2005 memoirs 'The Mayor of MacDougal Street' by the late New York folk artist Dave Van Ronk, and has been nominated to compete for the sought after Palme d'Or prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. This passionate story about love, music, finding oneself and learning from one's mistakes will hit screens in the UK on January 24th 2014.

Gus Van Sant To Direct Fifty Shades Of Grey? James Franco Lets Rumour Slip

James Franco Gus Van Sant Amanda Seyfried Garrett Hedlund

James Franco may have let slip who’s on board to direct Fifty Shades of Grey. The actor was speaking to the Sunday Times at the Sundance Festival and revealed that he was under the impression that Gus Van Sant was on board to do it. And, he revealed, if the Good Will Hunting director was on board, he’d be in favour of stepping into the hotkey-contested role of Christian Grey.

“It sounds interesting,” said Franco, when asked about the forthcoming novel adaptation. “I heard Gus [Van Sant] might direct it. If he directed it, I'd do it.” It wouldn’t be the first time that Franco had been involved in a cinematic BDSM adventure, either. He produced the BDSM documentary Kink as well as playing the role of Hugh Hefner in the porn biopic Lovelace. Gus Van Sant is no stranger to a controversial subject matter, either, with movies such as My Own Private Idaho and Drugstore Cowboy under his belt. Interestingly, as Examiner.com reported, Van Sant recently finished filming Promised Land, with the very same production company being used on Fifty Shades of Grey.

Fans of Fifty Shades are starting get impatient, waiting to find out who will be cast in the movie, as well as who will helm the production from the director’s chair. A number of fan-made ‘trailers’ have surfaced, including one with Amanda Seyfried and Garrett Hedlund but excited fans will be disappointed to learn that the movie has not been cast yet.

On The Road Review

OK

Despite the skill behind and in front of the camera, a badly constructed script flattens this film version of Jack Kerouac's iconic 1957 novel. It's beautifully shot and sharply played by the starry ensemble cast, but the repetitive structure leaves the film with no forward momentum. Instead of a voyage of discovery, it feels like a lot of random, pointless wandering.

Thinly autobiographical, the story centres on the young New York writer Sal (Riley). He's drawn to the charismatic Dean (Moriarty), a charming rogue who's married to 16-year-old Marylou (Stewart) but is having an affair with Camille (Dunst) while seducing every other woman he meets. And quite a few men as well, including Sal's friend Carlo (Sturridge). All of them are writers and artists, hanging out in clouds of hash smoke as they drive back and forth across America in search of something to write about.

Of course, Sal finds this in Dean as their friendship ebbs and flows over several years. Since this is essentially Sal's story, it's rather odd that the film abandons him from time to time to follow someone else, leaping jarringly into another situation, often marked by Dean's sudden reappearance after yet another bit of roaming. So while we understand how everyone is held in Dean's magnetic orbit, we can't quite see the point of it all. Sal may be obsessed with his thoughts of Dean, but he seems strangely willing to abandon him time and time again. There isn't nearly enough of the scene-stealing costars like Mortensen, Adams and Buscemi. And frankly, it should be a crime to waste Moss (of Mad Men fame) in such a fragmented role.

Eragon Review

Weak
Christopher Paolini began writing Eragon, a fantasy novel about dragons, elves, and a farmboy who finds out that his destiny is to destroy an evil empire, when he was 15 years old. Those themes may sound familiar to you, and that was perhaps an important part of the book's success: It became a bestseller.

I could have written a similar book (though perhaps not when I was fifteen) but I never guessed that the Tolkien estate and Lucasfilm would have given permission to use all of their ideas. As one of Paolini's characters says, forgiveness is easier than permission, and everyone seems to have forgiven Paolini (up to a point -- we''ll see how well the movie does). That's good, because every major plot point in Eragon is ripped off from The Lord of the Rings or the Star Wars series (with occasional ripoffs, probably subconscious, from other sources, like The Wizard of Oz). In fact, Eragon is so derivative it's surprising that it even got published. Or it would be, if publishing houses still had standards.

Four Brothers Review

Weak

Mark Wahlberg is perfectly cast in "Four Brothers" as an angry, scruffy Detroit greaseball who returns home for the first time in years to avenge his foster-mother's murder during a convenience store robbery.

While not an actor known for his emotional range, here his soft-featured scowl embodies resounding heartbreak without giving an inch on the kind of toughness and bravado that makes his character a loose cannon. How loose? He even tells the investigating cops (one an old friend played by the sublime Terrence Howard) who come to pay their respects that "I'm not here for the funeral."

Reunited with his three brothers -- fellow former delinquents adopted by the kindly but adamant Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan), and played by Garrett Hedlund ("Troy") and talented rappers-turned-actors Andre Benjamin and Tyrese Gibson -- it isn't long before they're literally beating a path through the ghetto toward any suspects they can get their hands on. And it isn't long after that before a conspiracy begins to emerge (the details of which are never entirely clear) involving bankruptcy and insurance money, connections to the mob, and crooked cops and city councilmen.
