It's that time of year again, time for the BBC to poll who it thinks we will all be listening to this time next year. You might be familiar with some of the names, others you might not be so knowledgable about, but they are all names that the broadcasting house has earmarked for success over the next twelve months.

Sam Smith
Sam Smith is one of the favourites for the contest

In the past, victors have included Adele, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J and last year's winners, Haim, and once again the list is predominantly pop-based, but there are some notable exceptions. Soloists such as Ella Eyre and Sam Smith appear on the list, having already found notable fame for their guest appearances on other artists' tracks. 21-year-old Smith appeared on Naughty Boy's chart-topper 'La La La' and Disclosure's 'Latch,' whilst Eyre found success as a featured vocalist on Rudimental's hit 'Waiting All Night.'

Some of the other poppier numbers haven't found that kind of success just yet, but their stock could very well be on the rise over the course of 2014, especially if they are singled out for success by the BBC. Representing hip-hop, Chicago's Chance the Rapper has tasted success within the hip-hop community by releasing his much-celebrated mixtape Acid Rap last year, being touted for success by the rap community since then. Mysterious electro duo Jungle bring an air of anonymity to the contest, whereas Brighton rockers Royal Blood are the only act representing the rock genre.

Elsewhere on the shortlist, London producer Sampha has already worked with the likes of Drake and SBTRKT and might be the dark horse of the contest, whilst Los Angeles native Banks has already gained a following for her dark interpretation of R&B.

Compiled by a collection of a panel of 175 music industry experts, the Sounds of 2014 longlist will be cut down to five over the course of the month, with Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw announcing the shortlist on air on Monday, 6 January, 2014. He will then slowly make his way down the list, until the winner is announced on 10 January. Check out the full long-list below.
