Empire Magazine has named Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back as the best movie of all time after 250,000 avid film fans adopted their democratic right to vote.

Of course, the conspiracy theorists amongst you will question the timing of this ‘poll’; smack bang in the middle of the Star Wars: Episode VII. Some might say a cynical marketing ploy is afoot, and the completely insane ones might even suggest Empire Magazine naming The Empire Strikes back is no coincidence.

But chemtrails aside, the swashbuckling space adventure secured the top spot ahead of Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster classic, The Godfather. And it wasn’t the only Star Wars film in the list, with A New Hope – the first film released in the series but the fourth chronologically within George Lucas’ lore – comes in sixth. 

J.J. Abrams is currently filming another episode for the franchise in Episode VII, something many diehard fans of the films never though would happen. It call came into fruition when Disney bought LucasFilm and everything Star Wars for a touch over $4b. They’re also planning on spin-off stories, with the first to be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards set for release in 2016.
