Viceroy's House Trailer

'Viceroy's House' follows the life of the last Viceroy of India who was the figurehead of relinquishing British rule on the Indian subcontinent in 1947. Lord Mountbatten and his wife Lady Edwina Mountbatten were charged with overseeing India's newfound independence, wanting the nation to stay united as one. However, India was already divided by religion, with Muslim leader Muhammed Ali Jinnah wishing to establish a separate country in the form of Pakistan. The Partition of India was not a desirable option for the British rule, but as the civil unrest grew amongst the people and people began to divide themselves anyway, it became the only option for minimal damage to all nations.

Gillian Anderson Secures Equal Pay With David Duchovny Ahead Of 'X-Files' Return

Gillian Anderson David Duchovny

She may have won Emmys and Golden Globes for her performances as Dana Scully in ‘The X-Files’, but Gillian Anderson apparently had to stand her ground and insist on equal pay with her co-star David Duchovny for the series’ imminent return.

47 year old Anderson reportedly had to battle to secure pay parity with 55 year old Duchovny, according to an article in the Daily Mirror. ‘The Fall’ actress, said to be worth £17 million, was initially offered only half of what Duchovny was for the first ‘X-Files’ series in 14 years.

It’s a significant victory financially as well as symbolically, as Duchovny was offered between £155,000 and £172,000 per episode for the comeback tenth series, according to some reports.

Mr. Morgan's Last Love Review

Very Good

Complex emotions and a gentle exploration of interpersonal connections make this Paris-set drama worth a look, especially since it's so nicely played by the eclectic cast. German filmmaker Sandra Nettlelbeck (Mostly Martha) lets the story unfold slowly and steadily, getting deep under the skin of the characters in the process. The draggy pace sometimes makes the two-hour running time feel very long indeed, but it lets the cast to take the time to create rich, detailed connections that are easy to identify with.

It's been three years since Matthew Morgan (Michael Caine) buried his wife Joan (Jane Alexander) in a cemetery in Paris, their chosen home. Now he imagines her everywhere he goes, feeling her absence all the time until he runs into the young dance instructor Pauline (Clemence Poesy). Not only does she remind him of Joan, but he fills a gap left in her life after her father died. So the two begin an offbeat friendship that feels more like family than anything else. Even so, Matthew's loneliness sparks a visit from his son Miles (Justin Kirk) and daughter Karen (Gillian Anderson), who's too busy to stay for very long. They of course don't trust Pauline. And as she witnesses Matthew's interaction with them, she begins to understand that he has never related to them as a father.

While the premise sets things up for a whole lot of healing and sentimentality, the script avoids this by remaining earthy and raw, digging deep into the characters without trying to explain everything they are doing or thinking. There certainly isn't a right way to mend the problems between Matthew and his children, although it's clear that a bit of openness and respect will go a long way. Caine plays this beautifully, with a spark of wry humour alongside Matthew's relentless pain. His scenes with Poesy have a delicate chemistry that is refreshingly difficult to fully understand, and yet it feels authentic. And when Miles enters their world, things shift in even more interesting directions.

Every year, The Academy makes a selection of short films from three separate disciplines: animation, documentary and live action. And while the latter categories are usually filled with hard-hitting, affecting stories, the animation section provides levity.

Firstly, we have ‘Mr. Hublot’ – a semi-mechanical man living in a semi-mechanical world. Is A Third 'X-Files' Movie Really Such A Good Idea?

David Duchovny Gillian Anderson Chris Carter

The news that there could be a third X-Files movie in the works is sure to provoke mixed reactions even from the show's most ardent fans. Though it was widely agreed that the first movie (1998) was a successful tie-in to the long-running sci-fi series, the second The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008) drew mixed critical reactions with many complaining that it was not as strong as the TV show.

From Up On Poppy Hill Review

Very Good

From the studio that brought us classics like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, this animated drama feels unusually low-key and realistic. But while the lack of fantastical elements leaves it somewhat dry, as if it should really be a live-action movie, the animation is still a lavishly detailed feast for the eyes.

It's set in 1963 Japan, where orphaned teen Umi (Bolger) lives with her grandmother (Hendricks) atop a hill overlooking a fishing village. She raises flags every morning as a signal her fisherman father, who died in the Korean War, then heads to school where the topic on everyone's lips is the impending demolition of the ramshackle clubhouse. As the nation prepares for the Tokyo 1964 Olympics, old buildings like this must go, but the students band together to protect it, and Umi teams up with student journalist Shun (Yelchin) to clean up the building and make a plea to the corporate boss (Bridges). Meanwhile, Shun is having a personal crisis: as he begins to fall for Umi, he starts to suspect that they have the same father.

The film never really weaves these two plot strands together, so as Umi and Shun try to save the clubhouse and work out their parentage, each storyline feels like a distraction from the other. But they both raise intriguing questions about the past, present and future in a nation still recovering from WWII. And the beautifully rendered backgrounds bring the period to life with artful detail. On the other hand, the characters are more basic anime shapes, inexpressive and a bit stiff, which makes it difficult to identify with them even when their stories turn extremely emotional.

Sister Review

Excellent
A bracingly honest approach to flawed characters makes this small-scale Swiss drama thoroughly involving. And moving too. Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.

It's set at the foot of a spectacular Alpine ski resort, where Simon (Klein) spends winter days travelling up and down the slopes, grabbing whatever isn't locked down, then selling the stolen goggles, gloves and even skis to help support his sister Louise (Seydoux). They live in a tiny flat, but Louise is annoyed that she has to take care of Simon, and she's usually off with yet another boyfriend. So Simon begins to turn to other people for a sense of family, including a ski-lift chef (Compston) who helps him with his scam and a foreign woman (Anderson) who seems like the ideal mother.

In their scenes together, Klein and Seydoux have a remarkably authentic chemistry that includes tiny jealousies, rivalries, private jokes and a fierce loyalty to each other. As we learn more about their past, this takes on new meaning that's both warmly touching and darkly chilling at the same time. These two may have a difficult life, but they're enjoying it as much as they can. And their complicated relationship is packed with moments of tenderness that undercut the resentment.

The film is shot in an off-handed way that pulls us into each scene. The great cinematographer Agnes Godard captures the staggering beauty of the Alps along with tellingly intimate moments, contrasting their grim block of flats with the soaring natural scenery. And while some of the side characters feel a little contrived, they help us understand Louise and Simon in ways that catch us aback. This is a raw, unusually sensitive portrait of two people whose personal connection drives them crazy even as it gives them hope.

Shadow Dancer Review

Excellent
Like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, this thriller refuses to burst out into action mode, preferring to keep its thrills cerebral as the characters circle around each other like sharks. It's a fiercely complex, intelligent film that's expertly handled by Marsh (Man on Wire) in his narrative directing debut. And while mainstream audiences may long for just one explosive car chase, there are plenty of resonant themes to hold our attention in other ways.

Riseborough gives her best-yet performance as Colette, a young IRA operative who visits London in 1993 and is arrested by MI5 agent Mac (Owen). He offers her a terrible deal she can't refuse: if she wants to avoid prison to raise her son, she'll have to return to Belfast and spy on her mother (Brennan) and activist brothers (Gillen and Gleeson). But when she gets home, she discovers that the IRA boss (Wilmot) knows there's a spy in their midst. Is he talking about her? Or is there another one? And Mac is also a bit nervous when his boss (Anderson) starts acting suspicious.

After a terminated plot to bomb London, she is arrested for the part she played in the scheme. Johnny English Reborn Review

Good
After the painfully unfunny 2003 original, a franchise was highly unlikely. And yet the spoof spy is back, and this film actually has several hilarious set pieces. It's not hugely consistent or clever, but this one's at least amusing.

After a disastrous mission in Mozambique, disgraced spy Johnny English (Atkinson) joined a Himalayan monastery. But MI7 boss Pegasus (Anderson) calls him back into service, and soon he stumbles into a nefarious plan to assassinate China's prime minister. But he's also of course causing havoc. Now the lead suspect, only the agency's sexy shrink Kate (Pike) and his sidekick Tucker (Kaluuya) still have faith in him. And as the murderous plot unfurls at a mountain-top Swiss hideaway, English makes a daring attempt to save the world and clear his name.

The X-Files: The Complete Series Review

Extraordinary
In the early 1990s, the young Fox network was just beginning to hit its stride with an odd mix of television not found on the major three networks. Fox viewers found irreverent comedy courtesy of the dysfunctional families on The Simpsons and Married... with Children; gripping real-life crime action in COPS and America's Most Wanted; and sappy post adolescent soap drama with Beverly Hills 90210 and Party of Five. Just about the only thing missing from this eccentric network line-up was a show about aliens. Oh, but wait... oeven that show would eventually find a home on Fox; in the fall of 1993, The X-Files arrived.

The riveting pilot episode quickly sets the framework for the entire series. FBI Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) works outside of the bureau's mainstream on discarded, unsolved cases regarding paranormal activity called the X-Files. His immediate supervisors think his work is without merit, so they assign a young female agent, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) to work with Mulder and disprove his wild theories. Mulder believes we are not alone in the universe; Scully believes science holds the key to the unexplained. Their first case together -- teenagers being abducted and killed in Oregon -- raises more questions than answers and leaves Scully with little exculpatory evidence to report back to her superiors.

The House Of Mirth Review

Good

Director Terrence Davies took a chance casting "The X-Files'" Gillian Anderson as the devastated heroine in his adaptation of "The House of Mirth," Edith Wharton's corset opera of turn-of-the-Century social politics.

But in her first 20 seconds on screen -- speaking in deliciously eloquent dialogue and looking stunning in plumed hats with veils, fur collared dresses, brooches and a parasol -- she erases any and all memory of Agent Scully, the TV alter-ego you probably thought would haunt the actress for the rest of her career.

A drawing room drama about the whispered politics and wily business of marriage in New York high society, the film is about a beautiful young socialite whose life becomes hampered with scandal, in part because she can't reconcile her heart with the fact that she must marry well to maintain her station.
