Ed Sheeran Glastonbury Festival

Despite the fact that he has just completed an excellent closing set at Glastonbury Festival, Ed Sheeran has still found himself the victim of a whole load of criticism for it. Whether he's been accused of using a backing track, or simply not being Glasto material.

Ed Sheeran certainly doesn't deserve the amount of hate he's getting for his headline performance at Glastonbury 2017, but thankfully he appears to be taking it all in his stride. And, let's face it, it's hardly going to have a negative effect on his career.

The record is held by a 2009 gathering of 5,814 people who stood together at the Ithaca Festival in New York. Because of practicalities, that record won’t be broken as so many people can’t be counted in the time period imagined.

MetallicaMetallica are set to headline Glastonbury this year

When he’s not fronting Metallica, singer James Hetfield hunts bears, he’s also a member of America’s National Rifle Association and is set to narrate an eight-part TV series called 'The Hunt', documenting the killing of Kodiak brown bears in Alaska. Unsurprisingly, animal rights activists are outraged at the singer’s after work activities and have called for the band to be pulled from the festival.

Nice Work, 'Noah': Darren Aronofsky's latest epic, Noah, was released last weekend and managed to triumph at its debut box office with $44 million, despite all the negative publicity regarding religious condemnation and middling reviews. Starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Emma Watson, Noah is based on the well-known Genesis tale but is given a pump of testosterone with the Black Swan director's dramatic CGI marvel. Check out the trailer.

Glastonbury Line-Up Confirmed: Elbow, Kasabian, Arcade Fire, Jack White...And Who Else?

Elbow Arcade Fire Glastonbury Festival Dolly Parton Bryan Ferry Blondie Jack White Black Keys Janelle Monae Kelis

After months of speculation, the official line-up has been confirmed for the 2014 Glastonbury Festival, which will be held from the 27th to the 29th June this year. The festival tweeted this year's snazzy line-up poster which listed a tonne of previously unconfirmed acts. Sadly, and despite the rumours, it doesn't look like Prince will be getting funky at Glasto but the appearance of Elbow, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, The Black Keys, and Jack White should make up for the Purple One's absence.

Elbow Score No.1 Album, But Are They Headlining Glastonbury 2014?

Elbow Glastonbury Festival

Elbow have topped the UK albums chart with their sixth effort, The Take Off And Landing of Everything. The record, described as a love letter to both New York and Manchester, fended off competition from Paloma Faith's A Perfect Contradiction, which debuted at number two. Pharrell Williams' GIRL was pushed down to number three.

Over on the singles chart, dance anthem Tsunami (Jump) for Canadian duo DVBBS and Miami DJ is the new number one. Featuring rapper Tinie Tempah, the song was first released in September last year. This time, it took the top spot and pushed My Love by Route 94 down to second place. Pharrell's Oscar-nominated track Happy was at number three, while Pixie Lott's Nasty could only settle for number nine.

The singer, who made her comeback with new single 'Hard Out Here,' confirmed the news on Nick Grimshaw's Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Tuesday (November 19 2013).

"It got confirmed yesterday," she said, "I'll be doing 16 weeks of festivals over the summer and then tour." Lily said Glastonbury would be her first "big" gig of 2014 and added: "It's the best festival, I think - that, and Fuji Rock in Japan,"

Albums of the week... Following 2011's massively successful collaborative album with Jay-Z 'Watch The Throne', Kanye West makes a return with a new solo effort entitled 'Yeezus'. He proves yet again that he is one serious hip-hop artist as he introduces a brand new edge to his sound that has not failed to engage his devoted fans with a number one spot on six charts including the US, the UK and Canada. As Joe Wilde summarises, 'This may be his best album to date and is probably his most discussed one too, but one thing it definitely is, is a Kanye West album and no-one can do anything quite like what he can do.' Read the Yeezus album review here

Another album that's gaining some serious attention is everyone's favourite Icelandic rock band Sigur Ros, whose seventh album 'Kveikur' has not left any disappointment in the wake of its highly anticipated release. Their sound remains familiarly ambient as on 2012 offering 'Valtari', though has definitely become noisier and a little darker. Our reviewer Jim Pusey had only good things to say, revealing, 'Despite all the darkness to be found here, Sigur Ros have managed to create one of their most compelling albums to date by embracing that darkness and quite literally shining a light on it.' And that's it. Another year passes and Worthy Farm closes its gates on the Glastonbury Festival revellers for another 12 months. Though there's always the distant murmur of someone professing it "the best Glastonbury ever," there was a palpable feeling that this year's festival was among the finest in history. Firstly, there was heightened anticipation given the fallow year in 2012 and secondly, the sun came out. Oh, and The Rolling Stones made their debut, rollicking through a two-and-a-half-hour set on Saturday (June 29, 2013) and scoring five-star reviews across the board.

The surprise return of David Bowie in 2013 had left many commentators speculating on the possibility of the Thin White Duke headlining the legendary festival, though there was no lingering thoughts of "What if?" once Glastonbury got underway on Friday with a snappy set from Sheffield heroes Arctic Monkeys. Bowie became all but a moot point after Saturday, when Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and company played a career spanning set that included 'Jumping Jack Flash,' 'Tumbling Dice,' 'Start Me Up,' 'You Can't Always Get What You Want,' 'Gimmie Shelter,' 'Doom and Gloom' and 'Midnight Rambler.' "The night belongs to the Stones. By turning on the charm as well as the formidable back catalogue, they prove themselves well worth the wait," said the Guardian's Dorian Lynskey.

After decades of failed attempts, Glastonbury Festival organiser Michael Eavis finally managed to book the biggest rock group of all time for the world-renowned UK festival, and with an absolutely riotous set that had the huge crowd off their feet for the full 2+ hours set, The Rolling Stones managed to show just why they are still the biggest band on the planet.

Ronnie Mick Keith Glasto

Their headlining slot on Saturday (June 29) night proved to be the icing on the cake to what had already been an absolutely triumphant day two at the Somerset festival and after a hit-filled set from the Arctic Monkeys during the Friday headlining show on the Pyramid Stage, followed by the huge set from the Stones last night, the pressure really is on for Mumford and Sons to deliver when they take to the stage on Sunday (June 30) night to close the festival. Good news for people at home (in the UK) too, because the group did show some of their performance on the BBC afterall (an hour of it at least), despite saying otherwise prior to the set. Checking off such classics as '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,' 'Gimme Shelter' and 'Paint It Black' during their set, they may have been together for half a century, but Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood managed to grab hold of the audience like few other bands on the bill would be able to.

Haim Bassist Gets Ill During Glastonbury Festival Set

One of the three Haim sisters fell ill whilst on the Pyramid Stage today at Glastonbury Festival (28th June) - Este Haim began falling ill in the middle of the first of the band's two performances this weekend, blaming diabetes. Despite feeling a little off, the bassist began to play the rest of the songs on a stool and explained after their set: "Sometimes diabetes gets the better of you." According to DIY, Este declared to the crowd mid-set: "I'm not going to let this get the better of me, especially when there are so many beautiful people here. If I pass out, will someone give me mouth to mouth?" After she recovered, she declared it to be "the best day of [her] life."

She holds a degree in Ethnomusicology, revealing to the London Evening Standard that she finished the five year degree in just two, and plays guitar as well as bass.

The show took place on The Other Stage at the rather early time of 11am, though thousands made the journey from their soaked tents to watch the former Oasis man.

Though Beady Eye's show did not feature in the programme, frotman Liam has dropped a major hint earlier in the week, tweeting, "11am Friday - BE there or BE square.LG," while photographs showed the band travelling to Glastonbury on the train. Gallagher had always vowed never to return to the Pilton site following his former band's headlining set in 2004, telling The Sun, "The sound is s*** and really quiet. Get Lucky? Odds In Favour Of Daft Punk Playing Surprise Gig At Glastonbury

Daft Punk Kanye West Glastonbury Festival

Daft Punk might have the most successful single of the year, having recently hit the billion mark on sales for Get Lucky, but the band remains as mysterious as ever. Case in point: Glastonbury. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo have not announced any tour dates following the release of Random Access Memories. Surely that’s impossible though, they have to promote the album somehow.

This seems to match up with bookies’ line of reasoning. Currently, the odds for the duo making a surprise appearance at the festival (which kicks off today) are set at 6/4, according to NME. For reference, the odds for Beady Eye (5/1), David Bowie (6/1) and Queens of the Stone Age (10/1) are also pretty high.

Glastonbury Weather Dries Up Ready For The Big Acts

Many Glasto goers woke up to the pitter patter of rain on canvas this morning as Wednesday's warm, humid weather well and truly dissolved into rain. By the Thursday evening, the site was drenched - what had initially been forecast as a "short sharp shower turned into an all-day deluge," according to the BBC. And where there's rain, there's mud: big sticky, gloopy, welly-stealing piles of it. This didn't deter any of the 118,000 ticket holders already onsite, with revellers retreating to indoor tents or embracing the wet weather and sludge with gusto by making mud slides. As the main festival wasn't even fully underway by then, we can't say we'd like to be sharing their tent this weekend - let's hope they've brought some babywipes!

Unlike everywhere else in the country, the rest of the weekend in the South-West is set to be mild, but not exactly toasty, with mean temperatures of 18°C combined with average windspeeds of about 15mph: so that little weather forecaster's cartoon of a grey cloud will pretty much sum up the weekend. 2009's extreme weather saw torrential downpours and thunderstorms lighting up the valley but was followed by 2010's glorious sunshine, which caused sunstroke and dust problems. Punters have a whole weekend of musical, comical and performance joy ahead of them to distract them from any weather woes though. Saturday night will be headlined by The Rolling Stones who have described the Glastonbury headline slot as an experience they were "destined" for, with organisers Michael and Emily Eavis "thrilled" to have the legendary Stones perform.

The weather forecast for the Glastonbury Festival this weekend does not look brilliant: expect a lot of cloud. However, those visiting the Glastonbury Festival this year may be pleased (or rather not depending on your predisposition) to hear the traditional mud is likely to be back. Around 135,000 people attend the festival annually and this year is no exception. The festival site, located near the Somerset village of Pilton, opened its gates for early goers. Most slept in their cars overnight lying in wait to get a decent (probably on higher ground) site to set up camp.

The Forecast Looks Good For A Sunny Glastonbury Festival

Glastonbury Festival Mumford And Sons Rolling Stones Arctic Monkeys

Glastonbury Festival will be returning after a year off this weekend (June 28 - 30) and after a year away it looks as though at least one classic Glasto tradition will be void from this year's itinerary; the rain. Weather forecasts are indicating that in a much-needed break from the norm, the weather at this years Glastonbury will actually be good for a change and the sun will shine on in Somerset for the full stretch festivities.

BBC Weather is predicting an overall mix of sun and cloud over the course of the week, with a few chances of rain cropping up at points. Of course this is the British summer, and the British summer is never complete without buckets of rain at the worst possible time. Forecasters are predicting that the rainfall will only really be a problem on Tuesday and Thursday, which might make setting up the festival a living hell for organisers, and the same for earlier-comers on Thurs, but hopefully the sun will pull through and things will go off without too much disruption.

Temperature wise, weather experts are predicting an average in the mid-teens, with highs of 24C on the Sunday, when the headliners are Mumford And Sons. Also playing headlining slots during the weekend are the Arctic Monkey and Rolling Stones, who are making their first ever appearance at the festival in it's many years as a British summer institute - not that you'll be able to see them unless you have tickets for the festival that is.

Arctic Monkeys have returned with 'Do I Wanna Know,' the first single to be taken from their fifth studio album.

The new track, first played at a concert in California last month and subsequently used as a set opener during the bands Scandinavian shows, is now available to download on iTunes. A new video for the track has also rolled out online.

Featuring a thudding beat throughout and a rip-roaring Queens of the Stone Age-esque chorus, Do I Wanna Know is certainly an interesting track, if a little unremarkable. The band have also premiered new song 'Mad Sounds' at the Hultsfred Festival in Sweden on Friday (June 14, 2013) and again at the Danish NorthSide festival on Sunday. Both new songs re likely to feature on the band's forthcoming new album.

Festival goers may turn to hallucinogenic drugs or alcohol for mind altering experiences this summer but a peaceful group of Buddhist monks will help you seek enlightenment through meditation.

To coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Tibetan Declaration of Independence, the Dalai Lama's monks will make an appearance at Glastonbury, bringing their Buddhist choral chanting to the fields of Somerset.

On June 27th (the Thursday), the Grammy-nominated group will perform and carry out Buddhist rituals by creating a Sand Mandala - a ceremony that symbolises the transitory nature of material goods - in honour of their special anniversary's coincidence with the world-renowned arts and music festival.

Here's The Catch: Rolling Stones Ban BBC From Broadcasting Glastonbury Set

Rolling Stones Glastonbury Festival Mick Jagger

Ah, there had to be a catch didn't there? Surely the Rolling Stones weren't going to accept a relatively paltry fee for headlining the Glastonbury Festival when they could be selling out Wembley Stadium or some other soulless hangar and pocketing tens of millions. We were a little surprised when Jagger and company signed on the dotted line to play the historic festival on Saturday June 27, though it appears they're already tampering with things.

According to The Independent, the BBC has been told by the band that despite their media partnership with the festival, only a teaser of the group's performance will be broadcast. The ageing rockers demand that only the opening four songs of the set could be televised, with viewers told that the band has demanded a "blackout" of the rest of their performance. The BBC's head of music television Mark Cooper was in discussions last night with organise extensive coverage.

The Stones charged television viewers $40 to watch their shows in New York last summer, though the latest demand doesn't seem to have anything to do with money. According to a source, frontman Mick Jagger said he "didn't sign up for a TV show," and is concerning about factors beyond their control affecting a performance that could be beamed around the world. In other words, if it's raining, the band may not look or sound their best.

Albums of Note... Yeah Yeah Yeahs have returned after a lengthy break, with Mosquito. It’s a marked step in the band’s evolution and a further step away from their punky roots. Mosquito has opened up further avenues of creative possibilities for a band that once seemed shackled by their arty roots and somewhat more importantly, Karen O now has blonde hair, now folks. That’s the big news here.

The possibilities for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs now seem endless. The inclusion of Kool Keith's alter ego Dr Octagon on 'Buried Alive' is one such example. Although slightly scattergun in its approach, Mosquito almost feels like a record the band needed to make to reach the next stage of their evolution.

Glastonbury Hopefuls Left Disappointed As Last Tickets Sell Out In An Hour

Glastonbury Festival

If you’re still after a ticket for this year’s Glastonbury Festival, think again. The final batch of tickets went on sale today at 9am and sold out in just over an hour, The Guardian reports. The tickets on sale today were all returns from people that had previously purchased a ticket but were no longer able to attend. Such is the enduring hype surrounding the festival, the few remaining chances to go were all snapped up.

With the line-up for the festival now announced, those lucky people with tickets now know exactly who it is that will be entertaining them for the weekend. Headliners over the three main days will be Arctic Monkeys, Rolling Stones and Mumford & Sons. Remarkably, it’s the first time that the Rolling Stones have ever appeared at the festival, in their 50 year career. They will be joined by a vast array of band, comedians, theatre acts and street entertainers. Amongst the best-known musical acts on the bill are Dizzee Rascal, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Portishead and Rita Ora.

Emily Eavis, one of the festival organisers, apologised to anyone that was disappointed by not being able to get a ticket. She asked people to email [email protected] with any feedback of the ticket purchasing (or not) experience. The festival will take place this year between June 28-30.

Got That Festival Spirit? Charlie Watts Doesn’t - He Really Doesn’t

Rolling Stones Charlie Watts Glastonbury Festival

For everyone shelling out £200+ for a Glastonbury ticket, you can pretty much be sure that their dreams include winning the lottery or playing the Pyramid Stage. But it turns out, not even all rock stars want to play the festival.

And we’re not talking any rock stars, but the Rolling Stones – this year’s headliners of the now infamous stage. Alright, not all of them, just Charlie Watts, the drummer. “I don't want to do it,” moans Charlie in an interview with The Guardian. “Everyone else does. I don't like playing outdoors, and I certainly don't like festivals. I've always thought they're nothing to do with playing. Playing is what I'm doing at the weekend. That's how I was brought up. But that's me, personally. When you're a band … you do anything and everything. But Glastonbury, it's old hat really. I never liked the hippy thing to start with. It's not what I'd like to do for a weekend, I can tell you.” This is all great news for those you have actually shelled out the pricey cover fee for a ticket. Now they know the drummer of the headline act would rather be at home drinking tea.

“The worst thing playing outdoors is when the wind blows, if you're a drummer, because the cymbals move … it really is hard to play then,” adds Charlie, giving a musical reason why outdoor playing isn’t the best.

James Blake John Grant Die! Die! Die! The Eels Yo La Tengo Yeah Yeah Yeahs Laura Mvula Justin Timberlake Rolling Stones Noel Gallagher Damon Albarn Glastonbury Festival

James Blake Overgrown Artwork

Albums of Note... It’s been a long two years since James Blake released his debut eponymous album and now, the pioneering producer returns with Overgrown, album number two. Peppered with quality collaborations, with hip-hop legend RZA and electronic music’s figurehead Brian Eno, Overgrown is the sound of an artist still trying to find his niche, but releasing high quality, accomplished tracks, whilst he’s on his journey. Blake really is a talent to behold, as his ingenious moulding together of poles apart genres and production wizardry clearly shows… when you're already as accomplished at all manner of musical exercises as he is then it will obviously be hard to focus all this talent and all this energy into one place.

Splitting opinion like musical Marmite, John Grant returns with Pale Green Ghosts. This album may sound unrecognisable as Grant, to anyone already familiar with his work. He’s hooked up with Gus Gus’ Biggi Viera and has decamped to Reykjavik. As a result, a new reliance on vintage-sounding synthesisers and a nod to club-land has John Grant sounding like an altogether different proposition to the John Grant of days gone by.Grant's dyspeptic edge may be blunted, but when called upon the man can make a fine ass post-modern disco song, like we ever doubted that he could, and Blackbelt is a tweaked remix away from the transient world of A Lists, charts and chat shows. Cleverly poignant, its way with knock out disses would give Jake Shears something to think about if it proved to be a permanent change of direction…

Glastonbury 2013 Line-Up Revealed, But Is It A Let Down?

Mumford And Sons Rolling Stones Arctic Monkeys Glastonbury Festival

“Boo, the Glastonbury line-up’s rubbish … Yaaay, the Glastonbury’s line-up’s amazing.” It happens every year, but so it goes when you’re a festival the size of a large town with about 100 hundred stages which basically means your line-up is anyone in the world on tour. Anyone can manipulate the names to make the bill look brilliant or terrible, watch us do it now: so you wouldn’t get us going to a festival if we were told the line-up was The Courteeners, Newton Faulkner, Hurts, Jake Bugg and Miles Kane. They just don’t float our boat. But tell us that it’s a festival featuring Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Phoenix, The Horrors, Portishead and Foals? We’d probably snap your arm off for a ticket (and we would, if any Glastonbury PR happens to be reading this.)

Mumford & SonsMumford & Sons are headlining Glastonbury for the first time

The point? Glastonbury is never just about the headliners and it’s never just about one stage. Sure you could argue that this year’s Pyramid Stage bill toppers amount to nothing more than a dinosaur act merely ticking off the last career accomplishment they’d not yet completed, coupled by a band who woefully under performed last time they headlined and another group who half the country want to start picking up pitchforks and farming for, and who half want to pick up pitchforks and want to start farming their organs, but if you were only going for The Rolling Stones, The Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons then you’ve really missed the point of the festival entirely.

The Rolling Stones Are Finally Set To Rock Glastonbury

Rolling Stones Glastonbury Festival

The line up for this year's Glastonbury Festival was announced yesterday and it didn't disappoint one bit, with veteran rockers the Rolling Stones named the headline act - making the upcoming show, quite unbelievably so, their first ever at the Worthy Farm event.

Festival owner/organiser and cult legend Michael Eavis has made no secret of his desire to one day book the world most enduring rock group for his festival, only to be rebuffed at every time of asking. After a year away from the festival circuit, Eavis really couldn't have picked a better group to ushering in the return of Glastonbury and those thousands of people who snapped up tickets back in October will no doubt be thrilled with the icing on this year's cake.

Michael Eavis Has His Sights On Rolling Stones To Headline Glastonbury 2013

Rolling Stones Michael Eavis Glastonbury Festival Radiohead Beyonce Knowles Jay Z Bruce Springsteen Stevie Wonder Arctic Monkeys

It looks like Glastonbury 2013 may already have its first big name already sorted, with festival organiser Michael Eavis admitting that he is on the verge of signing The Rolling Stones as the closing act for the five day festival in the Somerset countryside.

The festival currently has no confirmed headline acts, with the line-up not being announced until much closer to the event, which runs from Wednesday 26 – Sunday 30 June, 2012. Still, this hasn’t deterred people from snapping up the tickets, with the whole festival selling out within minutes of the tickets becoming available on October 7. Whilst cancelled tickets will be made available for resale in April next year, it is more than likely that they will go just as fast.

A source close to Eavis has spoken to tabloid paper The Sun to reveal that the first headline act will potentially be the Stones, admitting that the festival head is “desperate” to sign up the veteran rockers. Should the band agree to perform at the festival, it will be the first time they have appeared at the historic meeting ground for music enthusiast and festival goers that has seen the likes of Radiohead, Beyonce, Jay Z, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and the Arctic Monkeys headline in the past.

Glastonbury Festival, 2011 Live Review

As the oldest and largest festival of its kind in the world, Glastonbury has rightfully earned its place as the Mecca of all music events. It must also go down as the muddiest festival in the world, as even a relatively sunny and dry five days (by Glastonbury standards) couldn't prevent Worthy Farm from turning into a quagmire of epic proportions.

Glastonbury Festival, Preview 2011

This coming week will see approximately 150,000 punters and many more artists descend on the normally peaceful village of Pilton deep in the heart of rural Somerset. As the UK's longest running music and arguably the world's biggest and most notable of its kind, Glastonbury has established itself in folklore as the pinnacle of the summer's musical events.

Glastonbury Festival, 2010 Live Review

This years Glastonbury will go down in history. Judging by the number of interesting sunburn marks, it will probably be for the weather rather than the music. For the first time in years, not a drop of rain fell on the site for the entire weekend and temperatures soared into the 30s. For festival goers who are used to wading through fields of mud up to their knees, this was nothing short of a miracle.and the feel good party atmosphere reflected that.

Extra Glastonbury Tickets Snapped Up

Glastonbury Festival Arctic Monkeys Shirley Bassey The Killers The Who

An additional 20,000 tickets for this year's Glastonbury Festival sold out quickly on Sunday morning, to the delight of successful music fans who missed out in the main sale three weeks ago.

Today's tickets constituted those from the April 1st sale which were returned or where payment for the £145 tickets failed to process properly.

A total of 137,500 of the festival's 177,000 maximum capacity were sold three weeks ago using organiser Michael Eavis' new registration system, designed to beat ticket touts.

Previous ticket sales for the festival have been blighted by tickets appearing on internet auction websites soon after the annual sell-out is completed.

This year 400,000 applicants passed through the festival's online pre-registration process, which required them to provide photo identification.

Most of those will have failed to get tickets to the extremely popular festival, which returns after taking a break in 2006.

Headline acts already confirmed for this year's event include the Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, The Who and Dame Shirley Bassey.
