Carne was born in Northampton in the UK in 1939. She moved to the U.S. to pursue an acting career in the early 1960s where she rose to fame after appearing on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In as the ‘Sock-it-to-me’ girl. The phrase was one she repeated at the end of every sketch she performed. Carne also appeared in such series of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Fair Exchange

Carne married twice, famously to Smokey and the Bandit actor Burt Reynolds between 1963 and 1965. Her second marriage was to producer Robert Bergmann between 1970 and 1971. Both marriages ended in divorce.

Her autobiography, Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl, caused something of a stir when it was published in 1985. In her book, she described her tumultuous marriage with Reynolds and her relationships with other famous figures including Steve McQueen and Warren Beatty. She also described having a relationship with a woman for 18 months.

After leaving Laugh-In, her career took a downturn and she developed a drug addiction. She was also arrested in the U.S. for heroin possession in the 1970s. She moved back to Northamptonshire in the following decade where she lived out the remainder of her life quietly in the village of Pitsford, as the BBC reports.

Goldie Hawn was one celebrity mourner of Carne. Hawn had worked with Carne on Laugh-In and had gone on to become its leading female star after Carne left the show. Taking to Twitter on Monday (7th September), Hawn wrote: ‘Rest now sweet Judy. Loving memories’.

Retired comedian Ruth Buzzi also tweet her sorrow at hearing the news, writing:

‘A lovely English bird of comedy has left her Earthly nest and flown away with a piece of history and our hearts. Rest in peace, Judy Carne.’

Later adding: ‘I have a feeling someone just snuck through Heaven's security gates with a little contraband in her purse. Sock it to 'em, Judy, forever.’
