Hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash was left disappointed at his royal performance in 2002 because he was banned from meeting Queen Elizabeth II for security reasons.

The Message hitmaker DJd at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England and he was hoping for a brief audience with Britain's monarch after the show.

However, the star flew back home to New York disappointed after he was prevented from speaking with the queen by the royal security detail.

He tells The Observer Magazine, "I couldn't get close to the Queen for security reasons. I was asked to play at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games and I spent the whole flight over convinced they'd mistaken me for someone else. I was nervous as anything - and a little disappointed I didn't get to meet Her Majesty afterwards."
