Gregg Allman's life story is to be made into a movie.

The Allman Brothers Band star is to be the focus of a new film based on his best-selling memoirs, My Cross to Bear, which will be directed by Randall Miller, the brains behind an upcoming movie about famed New York City music venue Cbgb.

The film will document Allman's rise to fame with the rock group, as well as the tragedies which blighted his success, including the loss of his guitarist brother Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley, who were both killed in motorcycle accidents.

Allman's tumultuous personal life will also be touched on in the biopic - he has endured numerous stints in rehab and has been married six times, including a brief union with pop star Cher. Allman, 65, is currently engaged to marry his seventh wife.

Miller says of the project, "We knew it was a great story but didn't know how great it was until we read the book. That journey and coming out the other side is not the normal falling-into-hell story that rock and roll often is."

Casting to find an actor to play Allman is yet to begin.
