Guillermo Del Toro announced on Friday (27th June) that a sequel to Pacific Rim will be going ahead and is slated for a 2017 release.
Guillermo Del Toro has announced there will be a sequel to the 2013 science fiction film Pacific Rim. The Mexican director made the announcement via YouTube on Friday (27th June).
Pacific Rim was a relative hit for Guillermo Del Toro
Del Toro directed the 2013 film Pacific Rim which starred Son's of Anarchy stars Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman, Idris Elba (Prometheus), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), Robert Kazinsky (True Blood) and Max Martini (The Unit). The film focussed on human race's attempt to survive when a group of alien monsters, the Kaijus, come to earth through a portal on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. Humans created Jaegars, colossal machines, in order to fight the Kaijus. Whilst the humans successfully rid earth of the aliens and the portal, they're evidently going to find a way with the news of the upcoming sequel.

The 49-year-old director made the announcement via a video posted on YouTube. He announced he would be working on a comic series for the next two years and a sequel is also in the works. X-Men: The Last Stand writer, Zak Penn, will be joining Del Toro and Pacific Rim writer Travis Beacham to work on the script. Del Toro said "we are all very happy to be bringing you more Kaijus, more jaegers kicking each other's butt."
Del Toro is hoping a large number of the characters from the original film will return. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed, Del Toro said "The characters I love will return: Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau, But we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."
As the website reports, the actors are set to return although official deals have yet to be confirmed. Whilst there has no official release date, estimates from Del Toro and the studio suggest the film will be released in 2017/2018.
