Guy Ritchie's 'King Arthur' Doesn't Sell Well In The Box Office

Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie’s new film King Arthur looks like it has become the first major box office flop of the summer, after a highly disappointing showing on its international and American opening weekends.

The fantasy epic movie, directed by the distinctive Ritchie and starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law as well as a cameo by David Beckham, was made for an eye-popping total of $175 million on its production budget. However, its combined total from its worldwide opening weekend is said by The Hollywood Reporter to be $43.8 million, which could end translating into a $100 million loss for Warner Bros, the studio behind the movie.

In the United States, where it was presumably hoped that King Arthur would be able to capitalise on the success of ‘Game of Thrones’, it grossed $14.8 million from 3,702 cinemas, according to studio estimates. That figure was only enough to land the film a third-place position in the box office top ten for last weekend.

Guy Ritchie Wasn't Initially Keen To Cast Charlie Hunnam

Charlie Hunnam Guy Ritchie

When he began the casting process for his new film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, director Guy Ritchie had a long list of candidates. But Charlie Hunnam wasn't one of them. Meanwhile, Hunnam heard about the project. "I promptly threw my name in the hat," he says, "and Guy threw it back out!" Undaunted, Hunnam took action. "I jumped on a plane and showed up on his doorstep and said, 'Let's have a cup of tea,'" he laughs. "By the end of that cup of tea, I think he decided he quite liked me, so he let me audition and I finally got the job."

Charlie Hunnam eventually out performed the competitionCharlie Hunnam eventually out performed the competition

His determination to pursue the role was rooted in his childhood. "I had grown up with the Arthurian legends," Hunnam says. "At the point in my life where I wanted to become an actor, John Boorman's movie Excalibur was one of the films that I found myself watching over and over again. It was a film that I really studied. It captured my imagination. I'm talking about very young - six, seven, eight, when you realise that there is more than just watching the story play out, that there is an actual process behind it."

Madonna Guy Ritchie

Madonna wants to make music forever.

The 58-year-old pop icon ''can't imagine'' a time in her life when she doesn't want to make songs anymore but has admitted her ex-husband Guy Ritchie couldn't understand why she was so obsessed with her talent and art.

She explained: ''It's inexplicable; it's like breathing, and I can't imagine not doing it. That is one of the arguments I would get into with my ex-husband, who used to say to me, 'But why do you have to do this again? Why do you have to make another record? Why do you have to go on tour? Why do you have to make a movie?' And I'm like, 'Why do I have to explain myself?'

A court spokesperson in New York said on Wednesday (September 7th) said that the duo had reached a settlement out of court, which was concluded just “hours before” they were both due to attend a court hearing regarding Rocco’s custody, TMZ reported.

The disagreement began back in December 2015 when Rocco, now 16 years old, quit his mother’s world tour after an argument about homework and mobile phones, and went to London to live with his filmmaker father. He then refused to return to Manhattan for Christmas with Madonna, leading to litigation being opened up before Christmas.

This week's big global release is the DreamWorks animated prehistoric comedy-adventure The Croods, led by an all-star vocal cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Doing the publicity rounds this week, Gerard Butler has been out promoting his new White House thriller Olympus Has Fallen. Flitting between New York and Los Angeles to appear on every chat show possible, it's no wonder that he was somewhat fed-up by the time he reached David Letterman's Manhattan studio. Of course, the paparazzi caught it on camera as he lost his patience with a fan trying to get multiple autographs. But he manages to recovers his usual charm.

HM's New Skimpy Beckham Ad Sets Pulses Racing

David Beckham Guy Ritchie

A semi-naked skimpy Beckham ad will never fail to set pulses racing, but in the new H&M ad, directed by Guy Ritchie, this time around it's the footballer's turn to get his own heart racing. In the ad he's seen chasing a car with his three boys riding in the back, after having had his robe get stuck in the door of the car and get ripped away. Racing through his neighbour's back gardens and onto a road, he sees the car turn a corner. What a shame, Beckham has to stay in his H&M khaki pants.

Ritchie uses his background in action movies to create a dynamic and fast paced 'short film' which has a clear narrative and makes best use of the beautifully sunny surroundings of LA, as well as all its beautiful people.

"David is the perfect leading man," the director told Today. "For me, this felt like more than a campaign - it was like directing a short film."

Near Naked David Beckham Sprints Through L.A. In Guy Ritchie's H&M Ad (Video)

David Beckham Guy Ritchie Foster The People

It's a big day for fans of David Beckham. It's a huge day for fans of David Beckham's body. Hot on the heels of the confirmation that the British footballer will sign for French side Paris-Saint Germain, Beckham's latest ad for his bodywear range at H&M has emerged online. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the sleek clip sees Beckham running through Los Angeles in his briefs and, well, not much else.

Beckham launched a successful line of undergarments and loungewear in partnership with H&M a year ago and featured in a Super Bowl commercial that saw him in a tank top and boxers. In the new Guy Ritchie commercial, Beckham is seen waving off his kids to school in a dressing gown and slippers. But, what's this? Oh no! He gets his gown trapped in the door of the Land Rover (presumably driven by Victoria), which speeds off to the kids' nearby school. So, instead of phoning his wife and telling her about the funny thing that just happened with the dressing gown and asking her to un-trap it from the door, Beckham decides to sprint after the car, in his boxers!

Brad Pitt Turns Rastafarian For Interview Magazine

Brad Pitt Guy Ritchie Michael Fassbender Benedict Cumberbatch

Brad Pitt appears as both a hitman and Rastafarian for an upcoming feature with Interview magazine. The actor tells the October/November issue that he'd rather be behind the camera than acting and claims to be becoming increasingly picky about the movie roles he accepts

.

In conversation with director Guy Ritchie for the magazine, Pitt said of choosing his parts, "I want it to be worthy enough of a story to leave the family, you know? They're everything. The family is first . . . I also don't want to embarrass them." The actor, now 49, spoke of his desire to step behind the camera and it's not hard to envisage Pitt giving up the acting game to try his hand at directing. His roles are certainly becoming more mature, an Oscar-nominated turn in Moneyball, a critically acclaimed turn in 'The Tree of Life' and a recent part in the sharp political thriller 'Killing Them Softly' have established Pitt as one of the finest leading men of his generation, though there's always that underlying impression that if he could, Pitt would direct himself. Though his latest movie has been accused of having a Democratic agenda, the actor, known to be a supporter of President Obama, remained coy on his current political stance, "We're at a particularly ugly time when we're at such a divide in America, but that divide is not there because everyone is trying to figure out what's best for the people. It's there because one side is trying to win out over the other side," he said.

Though Pitt's apocalyptic 'World War Z' is perhaps his most high profile project currently in production, it's Steve McQueen's 'Twelve Years A Slave' that is by far the most exciting. Boasting a mouth-watering cast, also including Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch, the film follows a New Yorker who is kidnapped and sold to slavery in the Deep South. The film is set for release in 2013.

'Sherlock Holmes' Director Guy Ritchie To Marry For A Second Time

Guy Ritchie Brad Pitt Madonna

Guy Ritchie has proposed to his overjoyed and pregnant new fiancee Jacqui Ainsley. The British director of gritty films such as 'Snatch', 'Revolver' and 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' proposed to his model girlfriend at Madeo restaurant in LA. The couple were snapped leaving the restaurant with Ainsley sporting an enormous diamond ring, that Ritchie, not-so-subtly angled purposefully toward the cameras.

Ritchie may have taken heed of friend and colleague Brad Pitt's words in a recent interview that Ritchie did with Pitt, in which the film-star said “The family is first” and “they're everything”. His now-fiancee is pregnant with Ritchie's fourth child. The couple have been together since 2010 and already have one child, 13-month-old Rafael. Ritchie's other two children are with international pop-star Madonna, Rocco (12) and their adopted son David (7).

Ritchie has never regretted his marriage to Madonna, which ended after 8 years in 2008. Metro reports him saying “I enjoyed my first marriage. It's definitely not something I regret. The experience was ultimately very positive. I love the kids that came out of it, and I could see no other route to take.”

RocknRolla Review

Excellent
Here's some good news for Guy Ritchie fans. RocknRolla gives off the impression that the once-heralded filmmaker isn't trying so hard any more to jolt, confuse, stimulate, and entertain his demanding followers. As a result, he delivers his most jolting, confusing, stimulating, and flat-out entertaining picture since Snatch in 2000.

RocknRolla is sexy, fast, loose, smart, and extremely funny. It's crammed with colorful criminals, which Ritchie and cinematographer David Higgs backlight to great effect. It chokes on delightfully screwy schemes, which the director and his editor James Herbert slice, tape, and test drive at breakneck speeds. And that's the key. It keeps moving, hardly caring if you are keeping up.

Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels Review

Good
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels has been described as the British Pulp Fiction, and on the surface, that would seem like an accurate depiction. It's got the usual cross-section of characters with witty tongues involved in varied illegal activities, that get themselves into very peculiar situations in which no one really survives unscathed. Nonetheless, the film seems to be missing something that characterized its predecessor. And right now, you're getting the feeling that I'm about to quickly file Lock, Stock as another Tarantino homage/copy-cat crime, but that's not quite it either.

Lock, Stockis in fact, probably the best film since Pulp Fiction in which there are no really good guys. Pulp Fiction, Lock, Stockbegins with what would seem to be a simple story, that quickly careens out of control. In this case, four buddies; Tom, Eddie, Bacon, and Soap, pool their money together to back can't lose Eddie at an unbeknownst-to-them rigged game of cards. Of course they get fleeced, and end up in heavy debt to the local heavy. What follows is a madcap plan to recoup the money by intercepting a heist Eddie has fortuitously discovered his neighbor is carrying out. The interrelation of the problems with the original heist, along with the interception of it by Eddie's gang, and a couple of other local illegal activities result in a frantic circle of destruction.

Swept Away (2002) Review

OK
After beginning his career with two frenetic crime films (Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels; Snatch), filmmaker Guy Ritchie has changed his tone in order to make a vanity project. But it's not his vanity at stake, it's that of his wife, super-hyphenate Madonna, in this fairly faithful remake of the lusty, free-wheelin' 1974 Italian film Swept Away. That original, directed by Lina Wertmuller, starred Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato. This update, a film that Ritchie proves does not need to exist, stars Adriano Giannini (in his father's original role), Madonna, and Madonna's sinewy body.

Sure, hubby puts those super-tight abs and intimidating biceps front-and-center. But he's also forced to put Madonna's acting ability up there as well, and the awful truth is that Madonna is an average actress at best. Being as naturally theatrical as she is (and that's a compliment), she excels at stagy roles, as in Evita, but when it comes to the everyday, she comes across as rather limp.
