A new Star Wars spin-off movie revealing the backstory of iconic character Han Solo has been announced by Disney. The as-yet-untitled adventure will follow the first Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One, which is set for release next year on December 16th.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the pair behind the hugely successful Lego Movie will be directing, while father and son team Lawrence and Jon Kasdan will be penning the script, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the franchise’s latest instalment, The Force Awakens with director JJ Abrams. No further details or casting have been announced for the project, but it has been slated to hit cinemas on May 25th 2018.

In a statement released by Disney Miller and Lord said, “This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us.”

“This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

But fans wont have that long to wait before they see Han Solo in action again, as the character will be appearing in JJ Abrams' The Force Awakens, which is set to hit later this year on December 18th. Harrison Ford will be reprising the role, having last played the character in 1983's Return of the Jedi.
