Hayley Atwell Has No Interest In Playing 'Doctor Who'

Hayley Atwell

On this season of 'Doctor Who', fans will have to say goodbye to the show's 13th Doctor in Peter Capaldi, as the actor bows out following a brief run as the time-travelling Time Lord. Of course, this means that the BBC are looking for a new actor to take the place of the Doctor, with many fans encouraging the network to bring a female Doctor on board for the first time, amongst various other calls for a plethora of different men to replace Capaldi.

One of those actors that many fans have been hoping to see is Hayley Atwell. Formerly a part of Marvel television series 'Agent Carter' following her time in the role on the big screen in 'Captain America: The First Avenger', she then moved on to ABC drama 'Conviction'. Unfortunately, that show faced the axe after a single season, and with 'Agent Carter' also put on the back burner, Atwell could be hoping to find herself a new TV role. The Doctor however doesn't seem to be one for her...

Jimi: All Is By My Side Review

Weak

Exploring a year in the life of Jimi Hendrix just before he hit the public consciousness is a fascinating idea, but this biopic misses every opportunity to say something interesting. The filmmakers certainly invest this movie with plenty of stylish period detail trying to make up for the fact that they didn't secure the rights to use Hendrix's music. With a better sense of character or story, they might have got away with it. But this movie feels all wrong.

It opens in 1966, when Jimi (Andre Benjamin) is quietly working in a New York bar as a member of Curtis Knight and the Squires. One evening, he's spotted by Linda (Imogen Poots), Keith Richards' girlfriend, who thinks he should be a star. Linking him with manager Chas (Andrew Buckley), a former member of the Animals, Linda takes Jimi to London to record an album and build his reputation. Over the next year, Jimi hones his sound, puts together his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience and hooks up with local girl Kathy (Hayley Atwell). And it starts to work: the band breaks into the UK pop charts with a series of hit singles. On the other hand, across the Atlantic the Americans seem to be rather apathetic. And the organisers of the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival hesitate before inviting him to perform.

The rest is history. And it's not in this film. But then the story here centres on Hendrix's pre-fame year, which allows writer-turned-director John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) to dig further into the artist's motivations than most biopics do. Hendrix's stroke of genius was to fuse rock instruments with the blues, creating all new sounds with his guitar. But then these aren't in the film either. Instead there are just sound-alike tunes, plus one audacious performance on a London stage: singing Sgt Pepper just after it was released, with the Beatles in the audience. Whether it actually happened like this is anyone's guess; like much of the film, this scene feels mythical.

Jimi: All Is By My Side Trailer

Jimi Hendrix started earning money from his musical career as a simple backing guitarist at the Cheetah Club in New York City. Soon enough though, he was brought to England by former Animals member Chas Chandler where within a year he blew up into the legend that everyone sees today; the man who spectacularly set his guitar alight on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival. Within that year he began dating Kathy Etchingham, who stuck by him throughout his rise to fame despite the immense pressure it put on their relationship as he struggled to make it as the world's greatest guitarist. His journey was tough for everyone around him, but unbeknownst to him, it was only going to get tougher as he decided to break America too.

Hendrix became a rock icon in the 1970s but his life was tragically cut sort in 1970 when he died at the age of 27. The cause of death cited as a lethal concoction of prescription medication which led to asphyxia, causing Hendrix to choke on his own vomit. The film has been long anticipated as Hendrix's story truly epitomises the astronomic rise and tragic demise of a hugely popular and influential figure.

Cinderella - Teaser Trailer

Everyone is familiar with the classic fairy tale of Cinderella. Cinderella lives a mundane life doing whatever her evil step-mothers tell her to do, and all she dreams of is going to the ball and one day a fairy Godmother makes this wish come true and she lives happily ever after.

In 2015, Cinderella will have a new reimagining via Disney who have previously made a cartoon film, telling the story. This version is going to be live action and will star Lily James (Downton Abbey, Wrath Of The Titans) as Cinderella, Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones, A promise) as Prince Charming, Cate Blanchett (The Lord Of The Rings franchise, Hanna) as Lady Tremaine and Helena Bonham Carter (Les Misérables, Fight Club) as The Fairy Godmother. Given the war-driven fantasy works some of these actors have been in (namely Blanchett in Lord Of The Rings and Madden in Game Of Thrones), can we expect an element of this in this new Cinderella film? Probably not, but it should still be a fun film at the very least for both children new to the story, and people who'll remember seeing the previous version.

The film is directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh who you may know best for playing Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and The Chamber Of Secrets, but he has also had great success directing films. A recent example being 2011's Thor.

ABC Expanding Partnerships With Shonda Rhimes, Marvel With Fall Pickups

Shonda Rhimes Hayley Atwell

The series pickup frenzy is hitting ABC this week, with the channel announcing orders for five new series so far. Two of the pickups are rather unsurprising. One is the suspence thriller How to Get Away with Murder, developed by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers – ABC’s resident hitmakers behind Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. The series stars Viola Davis as a "brilliant, charismatic and seductive" law professor who gets entangled with four students from her class. Just wait till Twitter sinks its teeth into this one.

Shonda Rhimes
Shonda Rhimes is bringing a third potential hit to ABC this fall.

Then there’s Marvel’s Agent Carter, continuing ABC’s successful collaboration with Marvel. The new series pickup comes on the heels of ABC’s renewal of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The series stars Captain America's Hayley Atwell and takes place a year after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. According to the LA Times, it follows the story of Peggy Carter as she battles sexism in the 1940s and builds a career as a secret agent. The series sounds like a good choice to tap into the ongoing discussion about hot topics like feminism, sexism in the workplace and so on. Plus, it would give an even more comprehensive look at the Marvel universe from “ye olde days”, which is always a good thing.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Trailer

Following events during World War II and his confrontation with Nazi adversary the Red Skull, Steve Rogers awoke 70 years later to find that the world had changed almost beyond recognition. He is now reluctantly a part of superhero law enforcers S.H.I.E.L.D., led by Nick Fury who more than once makes Steve question the ethics of the group and epitomises the blurred line between good guys and bad guys. There are people he can trust though, namely Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow; a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. spy who embarks alongside him on a mission to tackle the latest global threat. However, when a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. is attacked, they find themselves in mysterious circumstances and start to wonder if someone's keeping something from them. As Rogers fights off a myriad of assassins, the real threat starts to surface in the form of the Winter Soldier.

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' is the sequel to 2011's 'Captain America: The First Avenger'. Based on the Marvel comics by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, it has been directed by Primetime Emmy-winning brothers Anthony Russo, Joe Russo ('You, Me and Dupree', 'Community') with a screenplay by collaborative writing duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely ('Thor: The Dark World', 'The Chronicles of Narnia', 'Pain & Gain'). It is set to hit the UK on March 28th 2014.

Black Mirror: How Britain (And Hollywood) Fell In Love With Charlie Brooker

Charlie Brooker Robert Downey Jr Hayley Atwell

Charlie Brooker's Channel 4 anthology series Black Mirror returned this week, with an altogether more dramatic and engaging season opener. Though praised for its uniqueness, the first installment of the show was dubbed unwatchable by some TV critics, with plot lines exploring the Prime Minister being forced into sexual intercourse with a pig and a talent show descending into pornography. Brooker's show was certainly hard hitting, though he seems to have toned things down for season two, sacrificing some of the surrealism for a more narrative driven approach.

Last night's episode - Be Right Back - was set in a distorted reality future, following young couple Ash (Domhall Gleeson) and Martha (Hayley Atwell). When Ash is killed in a road accident, his girlfriend signs up for a computer program that trawls the internet for Ash's public information and creates a profile representing him, which replies realistically to her messages. The Guardian gave the show a positive review, "This Black Mirror feels less like the usual Brookerian nightmarish video game dystopia, and more like 2019. It's also less satirical and acerbic than some of his previous television; not just a technology-obsessed sarcastic underwhelmist's bleak view of the future," wrote critic Sam Wollaston. The Independent's Neela Debnath picked up on Brooker's ability to intrigue the Twitter generation, "Be Right Back works so well because it has captured the social media zeitgeist. It was a lovely and touching story."

Brooker - a former PC Zone writer - has become a familiar figure on British television in recent years. He won early acclaim for his Screenwipe series, a comedic yet intelligent look at current shows and how television is produced. He went on to create the Newswipe spin-off series as well as hosting 10 O'Clock Live and writing for The Guardian. His five-part horror drama Dead Set was nominated for the 2009 Best Drama Serial at the BAFTAs.

I, Anna Review

OK

Even though this British mystery-drama is rather too creepy for its own good, it gives Rampling yet another superb character to sink her teeth into. She's working with her son, writer-director Southcombe, who reveals the plots secrets very slowly, manipulating the audience by withholding key details and misleading us with red herrings. But Rampling makes it gripping.

She plays the eponymous Anna, who is trying to get her life back on track after the end of her marriage. Living with her single-mum daughter (Atwell), Anna attends speed-dating events to meet men, and one night goes home with George (Brown), who turns up dead in the morning. Police detective Bernie (Byrne) connects Anna to the death and secretly gets to know her without telling her that she's a suspect. Meanwhile, Bernie's colleague Kevin (Marsan) follows the trail to a mother and son (May and Deacon). And as clues begin to emerge, Anna starts to remember what happened that fateful night.

Southcombe cleverly creates an eerie tone that often makes this feel like a horror movie. So before he gives us any real details about what's going on here, we already know that something very nasty is involved. The problem is that he dribbles the truth to us so slowly that we lose interest in the plot long before the actual revelations. Which makes it all feel like a cheat when he pulls the rug out, since the filmmaker has been lying to us all along.

Cockney geezers of the world rejoice as the big screen remake of the seventies police drama The Sweeney is in post-production and will be released in cinemas in mid-September. Ray Winstone stars as Detective Jack Regan whilst Ben Drew, alias rapper Plan B, stars as Detective Sergeant George Carter, the part initially made famous by Dennis Waterman. Despite being parodied numerous times for his tendency to write/perform the theme tunes of may of his shows, Waterman actually didn't write the theme tune to the Sweeney, however no word has been made on whether Shaw (or Waterman) will be making a special appearance on the film's soundtrack.
