Starring the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern, HBO series 'Big Little Lies' - based on the book of the same name and created for television by David E. Kelley - saw huge success following its limited run earlier this year. Originally slated to be a one-off mini-series, many thought the show had already seen its day, but it would seem now that a second season will be moving ahead with the original stars making their return for the comeback.

The original season saw the entire story in the book covered, so anything that does come about in a second season would be a new story built from scratch, but it seems that the critical acclaim the first run of episodes saw was enough for HBO and writers to take on the challenge. Fortunately, original author Liane Moriarty was the person asked to come up with the new story, and it looks like she's been able to do just that.

Sources at TV Line have confirmed that a spring 2018 production start date is being eyed, and with Witherspoon now leaving upcoming Noah Hawley drama 'Pale Blue Dot', her inclusion is all but officially confirmed.

What's perhaps most interesting about the second season is if the first's director, Jean Marc Vallée will also return. At first, he was hesitant about making a comeback, but soon changed his mind and said it was something he would like to see happen.

Now, those working on season 2 will have to work carefully if they're to ensure the brilliance of the first is recaptured. It's going to be very easy to slip into an underwhelming production on the show. Part of the magic of the first is that it felt like something entirely unique to anything we'd ever seen on the small screen before, so that's going to have to be something that happens once more if fans are to get behind the show's revitalisation.
